Play all of the classic series and Mega Man X-X4 for sure. X5 has its good parts, so you should probably play it too. X6 is more annoying than anything. X7 is pure garbage, I don't think there's anyone on Earth that actually likes it. X8 is better, but has too many gimmicky levels.
If you like those, branch out from there with the Mega Man Zero series, maybe the ZX games, play Legends so you can despair about Legends 3. I've barely played the Battle Network series and never played any of Star Force, so I can't talk about them.
