I actually don't like it. I didn't like it when it came out, and I played it again a few years ago just to see if my tastes have changed.
Out of the 6 characters, I didn't like 3 of them. Zell, Quistis, and Selphie were all pretty cool, but Irvine didn't really do anything for me (and his role in the worst plot hole of the game didn't help,) and I absolutely loathed Squall and Rinoa. Laguna and company were amazing, though. I loved those segments.
The music was pretty good. I still listen to Eyes on Me and Breezy from time to time.
The plot and story were bad. Time travel is an amazing concept, but is not done well in this game. Also, I will never not be mad at Irvine. The playable cast all grew up at the same orphanage. They all knew each other. All of your party members have forgotten about it though, since equipping GFs gives you memory loss. Except that Irvine hadn't equipped a GF before joining your party.
And the combat system is terrible. Junctioning absolutely breaks the game. With a small bit of planning at the beginning, you can go through the game without having to fight random encounters, with stats high enough to beat any boss you need to. The game can be beaten without gaining a single experience point, with Squall never going above level 7. Since junctioning correctly nets you max stats, the only thing levels do in FFVIII is make enemies have better stats, as they scale with your level. This is counter-intuitive, to say the least.
So I didn't like the story, a decent amount of the characters, or the battle system. The setting was good enough, I like more "modern" RPGs, with technology in them (I was big into High Fantasy when I was younger, and I kind of burned out on it.) The music was pretty god. Visually, the game was great at the time. But it isn't a game I will ever really say I enjoy. A few of my friends like it, and it's not like it's the worst game ever, but I don't want to call it good, either. I put it at slightly worse than average.

People got upset at Starfox Zero having a game mode where you couldn't lose. That's just an option, isn't is? Replace draw with transmute. It saves you a bunch of time, but still doesn't fix the easily broken battle system that trivializes the game. FFVIII isn't the worst game of all time, but the junction system was too easily abused to actually be fun.

It was my first final fantasy and my favorite one still to date, but the junction system is wildly unbalanced. Either people don't bother reading shit and think they can't cast magic or have to draw for it all game, or you end up with squall's ultimate weapon in disc 1 with minimal effort. In that respect, anyone who "hates" ff8 may be justified. Any other issues else are just shit taste

Literally nothing you do can stop it. If you fight lots of encounters you are penalised for not following the story. If you follow the story the cutscenes take up so much time that you are penalised for not killing things during that time. There is no way out of the cycle.

I agree with all of this. Perhaps 8 wasn't that bad as a stand-alone Final Fantasy game, but it was a massive let-down, especially in the story department, after 7.
