Resident Evil 4 would have been a worse game without the item management.

Hunger and sleep is important in survival games, but can easily be done poorly like in Minecraft

Depends on the context, forced walking cut scenes for example, while something like Vergil's focus in DMC4SE is a neat mechanic.

Spelunky wouldn't have been nearly as fantastic without the randomly generated levels

It's not about enjoying the maneuvering of items in your inventory, it's about understanding that a game where you can have everything and have to make no choices about what you take with you vs what you don't leads to a lack of tension and I'd less enjoyable
>>
>weapon durability

The only series I've seen where this was a meaningful mechanic was Fire Emblem to make special weapons/items/tomes require some resource management.

Almost every other game you're out in the middle of the woods bashing goblins then the game gives you a chore to blow some gold on repairs.

>inventory restictions of any kind - weight, size etc
Resident Evil 4 inventory system is GOAT though. Admittedly certain RPGs do this really good as well, it's just shit games like Earthbound that fuck it up
>hunger/sleep
Depends on the game, obviously works for sim games and (again) RPGs when you need to recover. Side note, eating in San Andreas is really not that bad since your character will probably never get hungry if you're saving regularly
>walking in a non-stealth game
What's the problem here? Walking is pretty essential for transitioning from a stationary position to a run. It'll look retarded without it, and running usually lowers precision (see Dark Souls).
>random generation
Depends what you mean by this, if you mean RNG loot systems then that is indeed awful

>Inventory weight- Carrying too much slows you down
No. This is a mechanic which DIRECTLY counters the entire genre of a sandbox game. Why make so many items and punish the player for picking up the 'wrong' ones without letting them know beforehand?
Immediately uninstalled Fallout 3 because of this garbage. A shitty mechanic that does nothing for the player, game or world building.

Random cones of fire in any kind of shooter, there is no justification that my bullets are not going where my barrel is pointed.
If I have my sights on the target my round should hit, or alternatively miss because ballistics and environment influence the trajectory.
Bullets should not leave my barrel at a 30º angle because im not aiming down my ironsights or i ran for 5 seconds just because you lazy pieces of shit are too stupid to program weapon sway .

It's entirely possible to do well in an RNG game while still realizing it's a shit, unfun mechanic.

MiM itself was a decent game for like 10 minutes while you struggled with the physics and hit boxes on the platforms.

Right now Peach's Untold Story is the best version and the dev is going out of their way to add so much extra bullshit that has nothing to do with porn and all the more to do with platforming and making it feel more like a Mario game. They turned 2 stages into 8 fucking poorly made worlds of which you fall through the floor in half the levels and it's so poorly optimized that it requires better hardware than Overwatch to run decently.

Anytime when the game requires you to do some kind of minigame that is entirely different from the maingame and is unfun and annoying as hell. So think like the nose minigame in M&L Bowser's Inside Story or the Space canon in Dead Space.

However they're cases when the minigame can be fun, like the hacking miningame in Bioshock 1.

See, inventory belongs in games that are about resource management. Carry weight becomes just another resource.

In an open sandbox though? Horrible, horrible idea, and should really stop.

>hunger/sleep
Same issue, really. If the game is about resource management and survival, then yeah, totes fits. Don't Starve needs a hunger mechanic. Minecraft... eh, I felt like it was kind of out of place, but it's connected to health regen rate, so I'll give it a pass.

RPGs? Not a good fit.

Really, most of your problems are just issues of developers going "oh, it was good for X popular game, I should shoehorn it into mine" without thinking of why it belonged there in the first place, or how it ran counter to their own games themes and core aesthetic of play.

That's probably more on so on the game's difficulty or imbalance with certain things. And by imbalances I mean things that are much better to use than said consumables like a healing spell over a healing potion. Or a mastered spell you learned over a consumable spell scroll.

I don't have a problem with level scaling as long as the ratio of power grow isn't 1:1 (so grinding does actually make the fight easier, but not so much). and / or you get new techniques and spells as you progress, which are the key for winning, not just brute force.
