How does it compare to Chrono Trigger?
It's a better game in every regard, the undisputed masterpiece JRPG on the PSX.
It's miles ahead CT.
>>340750574
This. CT was so bland and uninteresting that I actually got mad that anyone would dare call it a masterpiece. Cross was at least incredibly interesting with a deeper combat mechanic.
Also, Kid was fucking hot as shit.
Was it really necessary to have that many characters?
>>340750892
Nope, but it was fun trying to get them
>>340750892
Nope, but personally i like being given a choice, and also each one has an interesting backstory to explore,i also really like the art style its so much more appealing than the shitty CT one
Prototype for FFX in all honesty.
>>340750478

>>340750478
I like it a lot. I haven't played much of Chrono Trigger yet but so far I think Chrono Cross is better.
>>340750478
I have played the fuck out of both and I can surely say that Cross is better. The have a really forced connection though and they are good in their own system.
Cross is a better game.
Why is she so perfect?
>>340750478
Somehow manages to have even less characters development than Trigger while also throwing an absurd amount of characters at you that you even care less about. At least Trigger has arcs and main story involvement for each one.
The combat, while they tried to do something new is still slightly worse and neuters the brisk pace of the first in favor of swapping to a typical RPG transitioned battle screen.
The story is actually kind of interesting but there's a few parts I didn't like and it seemed like it could've been handled better in relation to Trigger.
But yeah it's good, just don't compare it to Trigger in most ways.

it's an okay JRPG but the problems are:
*the story turns int a clusterfuck near the end

*shits on all of Chrono Trigger
*retarded gimmick for the final boss that you need the internet to figure out

>>340750478
It's better and worse in different ways. The story is a clusterfuck that usually takes several replays to fully understand but lends a greater appreciation once you actually do understand how it fits into the CT timeline. There's a shitload of characters to play as which is great as finding each one can be fun but at the same time they didn't give nearly enough development to many of them, at least not in the same sense they did for each of CT's characters.
The music is God tier though.

>>340756558

although chrono trigger is one of the better snes games chrono cross is better IMO. chrono cross has an amazing soundtrack. the combat system...while funky at first is pretty unique and interesting.
however, like trigger...there are a few snags in the story where you wonder what the hell is going on and how would you know it after you look it up. also like in trigger some of the sidequests are too obscure I'm not sure how the fuck people discovered it without a guide.
I recently beat chrono trigger again. it's a great game. not the best snes game for me...but it brings a lot to the table. chrono cross isn't in my top 3 fave ps1 rpgs...but it's a great game most fans would enjoy.

>>340756558
It does fit, but you have to imagine it happening after the events in CT draw to a close. After Crono and friends beat Lavos and everyone returns to their respective time, the future (2,300 A.D.) isn't a desolate wasteland anymore and is thriving much like it was in 1,999 A.D. This meant Belthasar was able to create Chronopolis and eventually pave the way for the space-time experiment that resulted in the time crash hurling Chronopolis back to 9,000 B.C. thus a change in the timeline Crono and friends previously established.
>>340757038
Nah, due to the events of Trigger it ended up being artificially created in the newly saved future and sent back to the past. You're welcome to call it bad writing, but at least it's not a plot hole.
>>340757093
There wasn't really a point to deleting that.
>>340757191
I'm sorry anon.

>>340756896
Balthasar spent the entirety of the game's events trying to FIX what Zeal fucked up. Hence all the multiple dimensions, time traveling, and Project Kid bullshit. Still, the root of all the troubles in the game's plot come from the Zeal trying to use Lavos' to their own benefit without thinking of the consequences.

Can somebody explain the battle system in a concise way? I played this game for about 2 hours before giving up, I got to this bird boss and had to stop because I still didn't get it.
It's a good game but an awful sequel in that it fails to really follow up on anything the first game did. Everything that does carry over from the first game (from the story connections to the handful of combination techs) feels tacked on, like it was originally going to be a new IP but they decided to slap the Chrono name on it towards the end of production.

>>340750478
It's an amazing game that should've been it's own thing instead of trying to be a sequel.
I still fap to Kid's pixelated exposed belly to this day.
Chrono Trigger was a pretty straightforward, juvenile adventure with a bit of drama, but overall it had a silly and lighthearted tone.
Chrono Cross on the other hand deals with the consequences of altering the timeline. There's lots of death and sorrow, the main theme being that a life of a singe person can change the outcome of the future, creating many possibilities. I think the moment that had the biggest impact on me was when I realized I was walking inside a huge metropolis completely engulfed in tidal waves, which turned out to be the main area of El Nido where the game takes place, set some years ahead. Ruins of a civilization caught in a glimpse of time. One of many possible timelines destined for failure.
The atmosphere feels dark, unpleasant and heavy. Porre takes over Guardia, Crono and Marle are missing/dead, Lucca is dead, Robo becomes a locking mechanism for the frozen flan. Even the Masamune is responsible for many deaths and turns any person that starts wielding the legendary sword insane. Overall Chrono Cross keeps a pretty serious tone throughout the game, despite the main character being accompanied by a sword-bearing talking vegetable and a luchador psychic priest.
>>340758669
Yup. Serge was bitten by a panther demon and his father, Wazuki, along with his father's friend, Miguel, were sailing to Marbule in search of a doctor to heal Serge, but Schala intervened and caused an electrical disturbance that threw them off course and into the Sea of Eden where they stumbled upon Chronopolis. Inside, Wazuki brought Serge to the Frozen Flame which healed him but corrupted his father in the process.

I like the Time's Scar a bit more though. Laura Shigihara is in the other one and desu she shits everything up with her lyrics. She really should just stick to composing Plants vs. Zombies and not sing.
I think the game is great and one of the best JRPGs on the PSX, but it really suffers a lot from being rushed especially towards the end of the game, and the lack of unique dialogue for so many of the playable characters is really dissapointing.
By the way, give Radical Dreamers a try if you haven't already, it's pretty short and a really interesting prototype of sorts for CC. It's also the source for some of CC's music:

When you kill off the main cast of the previous game and state that their actions pretty much worthless in helping to save the world, I'm pretty sure there's some contempt for the original game there - or, at least the plot and writing. What they did wasnt worthless, it just had ramifications they didn't anticipate. Hell most of the Trigger cast is directly or indirectly helping the CC cast in some way during the game.
>>340762738
Find me a girl which dresses like that. But thank you, I certainly will.
>>340763021
Okay, that's the last one
>>340762738
dat clown bulge
>>340762904
>It is absurd that the money hungry squareenix hasnt tried to milk the life out of this franchise yet.
Well for one, Sakaguchi (Trigger designer) and Tanaka (Cross designer) are both fired.
Kato (Cross director) is also gone. Matsui (Trigger director) is tied permanently to Final Fantasy XIV and will continue to stay there until it becomes unprofitable, probably.
Really the only person who has Cross/Trigger experience left is that fucking hack Kitase. If we got a reboot of Chrono, he'd just hamfistedly insert his waifu Lightning into it.
>>340750478
It tries desperately to be different but still manages to make a future land and a prehistoric land
Deviant Art Chrono Trigger
Snake mansion music 10/10.
Same with the forest.
Games better in general outside magic being shitty and useless most of the time. Only problem is people compare it to CT and nostalgiafag harder than any other game series.
>>340762219
CT's issue was that the story was too happy and simplistic. With CC they decided to explore the consequences of the actions of he previous game. It wasn't about necessarily about shitting on the previous game, it was about the transition between kiddy themes and more adult themes.
>>340763217
Thanks.
>>340750478
Not well
Mitsuda is the best thing about this game. Forget the rest and play Radical Dreamers
>>340750739
Kid was my waifu before i knew what a waifu was
Its one of my favorite RPG's of all time. The only problem is I love sucking cocks and Arc the Lad(1+2) is psx king.
>>340763291
Well she does travel through time and dimensions so it could fit
>>340763073
>What they did wasnt worthless, it just had ramifications they didn't anticipate.
It was essentially worthless because the ramifications were so severe. All they did was cause more problems and helped create a space-time eating Eldritch abomination.
>Hell most of the Trigger cast is directly or indirectly helping the CC cast in some way during the game.
No they don't. They're either dead or useless. Crono and Marle got killed during Porre's conquest of Guardia, Lucca got murdered by Lynx, Robo makes a five second cameo before getting killed by FATE, and Balthasar's just some condescending douchebag who talks a good one but doesn't do anything but watch from a distance.
>>340763291
Doesn't necessarily mean they can't get a group back together to work on a game, much like Yoshida doesn't work for SE anymore yet is still contracted out to do a shitload of their art and character designs.
>>340763329
It's been a long, long time since I played through Cross, but I can't remember it actually going for adult themes more so than Trigger. It definitely had an edgy veneer with Lynx, but what did it actually go for thematically? I remember a castle break in, seven dragon gods or something, a cruise ship side story with mermaids, but I for the life of me cannot piece together what any of that was actually building towards thematically.
>>340760884
CT is more light-hearted and optimistic whereas CC is more serious and melancholy at times. You enjoyed CT more because it's easier to get into and doesn't drag itself out for long periods of time like CC does.
>>340750478
Superior in every single way.
>>340763329
>too happy and simplistic.
It has several civilizations in ruins and is about the world ending and the game over screen is really grim. It's about fucking time travel and even has several questlines which take advantage of it. It felt more like Cross was needlessly complicated and dark for the sake of carrying on beyond the sheer direness that is Lavos in 1, rather than Trigger being over simplistic. I mean most people can barely even get most of the content in Trigger without a guide.
>>340763912
Agreed, mostly.
Also, stop asking for a remake you plebeians.
>>340763802
And the eldritch abomination was ultimately killed as well, so in the end everything is fine. You may have a point if Time Devourer ultimately won out and destroyed all of time space, thus actually rendering all efforts from Trigger useless, but he didn't.
>>340762219
The plot line that lead to people assuming Crono and Marle were killed was introduced in the PSX version of CT, CC went out of it's way to confirm their survival. It killed Lucca and Robo, and brought them both back by the end.
He liked the world, but wanted to do something different with it, there's nothing inherently hateful in that.
Who here liked final fantasy 8 unironically?
>>340763802
>It was essentially worthless because the ramifications were so severe
No it wasn't. They created an ideal future and that much is being aknowledged, Cross deals with the threat of the abandoned timelines, and most of the Trigger cast is shown as being aware of it and having tried to take steps to fix it.
>Crono and Marle got killed during Porre's conquest of Guardia
Yet here they are in the Dead Sea helping Serge, and again at Angelus Errare.
> Lucca got murdered by Lynx
Shit happens. She fought and protected Kid, and kept the Chrono Trigger away from FATE.
> Robo makes a five second cameo before getting killed by FATE
...literally allowing the party to win an otherwise impossible battle in the process...
>and Balthasar's just some condescending douchebag who talks a good one but doesn't do anything but watch from a distance
So exactly like in Trigger then ?
>>340750478
just the best man
like, woah
best game ever
totally not samefagging and baiting Triggerfags
>>340764178
>It has several civilizations in ruins
Actually I guess I exaggerated. It's just the far future and Zeal which goes down as you are there. Still, I don't think Trigger was afraid to touch upon anything.
>>340763802
>Crono and Marle got killed during Porre's conquest of Guardia
False, the drawings in the orphanage came after the occupation of Porre, and Lucca still kept friendly relations with the nation.
>>340764284
I've been told, often, that it's one of the better FFs, but I've never played it.
>>340764284
I liked it but if I had to be real it has some serious problems. Level scaling and junction is totally broken beyond belief. Like, fucking wow broken.
>>340763861
Yoshida is an artist, not a creative designer. There's less bad blood
>>340764284
I think FFVIII is pretty solid overall even if it's really broken.
I don't know how could someone like Chrono Cross as something else more than "experimental and fresh but severely flawed at the end of the day". Certainly not a game for a top 10 list.
But JRPG fans aren't good at criticizing things in general, they just like games they played as a kid/teen and put them on a pedestal due to the emotional value they have to them, not on their merits.(so, very much like Nintendo fans)
>>340764284
Characters were dull and the world was poorly fleshed out. Junction was terrible and the lack of treasure chests really took away a lot of the enjoyment of the game.
That being said, Triple Triad was great and Quistis is best girl.
So what is your theory on what happened to Kid at the end? Did she merge with Schala or was allowed to exist as a separate entity?
>>340763913
The problem wasn't even the tone, I enjoy games with dark/serious tones no problem, but Chrono Cross seemed to just break its pace constantly to dump loads of exposition in-between the parts where something interesting happens. By the time I finished going through huge dialogue portions dedicated to exposition, I felt more exhausted than I would by actually playing the game.
>>340764926
Wow it's almost like the game went through development hell and wasn't even half finished when it got released
Why does Schala have blue hair in CT and blonde hair in CC?
>>340750478
>Was it good?
Yes. Best RPG on the PS1 after the Suikoden games.
>How does it compare to Chrono Trigger?
It doesn't. They're completely different games. Though Chrono Cross does have at least 40 story connections to Trigger, it is a self contained game.
>>340765201
Razzly best girl.
Reminder that this fucker right here ultimately got the best of Crono and Marle.
>>340765151
Something something magic.
