They probably should try because the first one had potential.
They're on too fragile ground to try anything risky like another Sunshine.
The Gamecube was their most innovative and inventive period in terms of software and it made them look like fools amid the competition. They seldom touch anything from that era now (see: Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, etc.)
Because Mario doesn't go to the beach, he goes to the grasslands, desert, ice world, mountain, water world, cloud land, and fire field.
Because Sunshine was the worst 3D Mario.
