There was a thread last night about double jumps vs wall jumps, but let's broaden it up a little:
What's the best movement mechanic in a game?
Tribes skiing and TF2 rocket jumping are the kings
I really like games that let you blink. It just feels so satisfying, too bad not many games do it.
Like a dodge roll for magic users
diving in FPS/TPS
shoutouts to The Specialists
wavedashing and ledgecanceling in Melee.

My favorite three in no particular order, more isolated since the three all sort of belong to different kinds of games.
1. Dash Jump + Double jump + Air dash + Wall/Ceiling climbing all together (Megaman X, Strider)
2. Grapple hooks with environment physics (Umihara Kawase)
3. Wall running / environment sliding to build up speed, combined with air control to guide yourself to the next slope/wall to maintain speed (Tribes, Titanfall)
Teleport

When some kind of movement ability can cancel an attack ability, and vice versa. You can become an unstoppable tornado of damage.
Strafe jumping. I tried playing Clustertruck and I couldn't get into it at all because it didn't have that Quake goodness.
I love surfing.
explosive jumping and air strafing
Dishonored. Really loved the way you can move arounddat blink
>>340711907
Short term flying like in Cave Story.
just cause 2's infinite parachutes + grappling hook. it seems so ridiculous, but after trying it out you realize how fun of a way to get around it is.
Spider-Man 2 Web Swinging
>>340711907
Airstrafing and bunnyhops.
Shit's incredibly fun.
>>340712068
underage detected
Bunny hopping, surface gliding and weapon boosting.
>>340713176
Ehh, I found it to be quite tedious when scaling straight vertical walls, especially because of the limited camera movement.
JC3 does it better but at that point you basically have flying hacks turned on.
Explosive jumping.
Especially if you can build momentum with it.
>>340711907
RIP
Moving in Worms is the one of the worst feeling mechanics in video games.
Advanced warfare and black ops 3 have very fun movement.
I also love Genji in overwatch with the double jump and wall climbing with the dash move.
>>340712367
Umihara's fishing hook is the absolute best. There's a huge skill gap between people who can barely get by a stage and professionals who can fling themselves all over to reach the secret entrances.
Surfing and wavedashing (and melee in general) are the most satisfying
Anime fighters and the air dash.
Bloodborne's sidestepping around targets.
Saint Row 4's superpowers.
Movement in literally any bullet hell/danmaku game.
Wall running in first person.

I fucking loved the movement in ORI
Also D44M.
>>340713391
that's because you haven't mastered the ninja rope.
Ground Pounds
Especially if it builds up speed the further you fall and causes a huge impact if you do it from a preposterous height.
>>340713062
>agility 2 + that one bone charm that makes you faster
So good
>>340713410
PLaying BLops 3 after playing nu-doom pissed me off
>The jump sucks
>aiming sucks
>shooting sucked
Really every single thing in that game feels "forced" and stiff
Doom really does feel so amazingly fluid
using the bug in morrowind to boost your speed so high that you get huge airtime just from running up a slope.
Bashing in Ori and the Blind Forest

HEY!
I agree...too bad i beat the game in like 40 min.
And thats collecting everything.. i couldnt fucking believe it
>>340711907
MMX1-3's Dash
MMX5-6's Dash Jump, w/hyperdash part
>>340713904
Aw yiss. I would be so phenomenally happy to get another game with bash
>>340713351
It used to be faster, but the new system gives you a lot more control over where you're going.
And aim gliding's cool shit.
>>340713436
>implying /v/ knows the concEXCUSE ME, IM IN NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION
>>340713224
This. I'd play the game just for that.
Whatever jumping a lot in Painkiller is called
Dash jumping games that also have air dashes and glides.
>>340715630
Don't even pretend it's the same.
What are some games that let me jump really fucking high?
>>340715919
It's different and slower, but more controllable.
Read, MR21 Draco-fuck.
>>340715853
I think its called jumping a lot in Painkiller
I'm making a horror metroidvania and I've been trying to decide whether or not to include double jumping. I mean, its totally bullshit and can take you out of the experience but on the other hand its fun. What do you guys think? And any other essential movements you'd want? Game is pic related.
>>340715853
Bunny hopping, though it's not as useful in Painkiller as it is in other things. It's only very slightly faster.
One of the funnest forms of movement ever devised.
>>340712238
agreed
why haven't more games implemented this
>>340716193
I'm not for or against double jumping, but the longer you hold out on giving the player double jump, the more the player will be relieved to FINALLY get it.
Just something to consider.
>>340716193
Let players jump off the heads of enemies ala mario or something, i donno.
>>340716193
Double jumping may be fun, but if it takes out of the experience... eh.
Did you consider Wall Climbing as an alternative? If done properly, I could see it working in a fun-ish way.
>>340716060
Saint's Row IV
>>340716193
>its totally bullshit and can take you out of the experience
>video game
>>340712297
>Broken stunlocks
>fun
lol
Q3A Bunnyhopping
>>340713351
Nigger do you even double dodge jump
>>340716060
Platform Masters
Running and jumping felt really good in Xenoblade X.
I really liked the general feel of SM64 and Sunshine
>>340712238

Janky as fuck, but this is all about shootdiving. I think it's really fun.
>>340717867
I don't. can't stand having to build up momentum. I get that's the focus of them, but to me it just screams lazy design.
>>340711907
>best movement mechanic in a game?
building up momentum with guns in Liero
also gets you killed
>>340718005
>Level design that incorporates building and keeping momentum
>>>>>>Lazy
What the shit is this meme
>>340716060
unpatched sonic boom
>>340718005
Lazy design is making characters that feel like mouse cursors or debug cameras.
What the actual fuck is wrong with you.
>>340720415
He's attributing HIS laziness to the game requiring him to put in some effort. The game is being "lazy" if it isn't doing it for him.
>>340716060
EYE
>>340718005
>lazy design
Do you want to try to defend this statement?
>Prototype's movement
>Alice's dash from Madness Returns
>Spiderman's web-jumping
These are pretty good
