The only true issue with the game is that the weapons could have been done a lot better.
Quake 2 did the weapons much better.

It would have been nice if it was more its own thing and had followed through with it's original ambitious RPG design, but what we got was still pretty great.
>>340701072
I don't think it is better.
I think both are equally great.
I prefer Doom's monsters over Quake outside of the Shambler, Vore and Fiend and Ogre. All of them are 11/10 fantastic.

It's not a terribly long level.
It's not too terrible outside of the Pain Elemental section.

>>340706038
>quake levels are shit
Except they're not you fag. The level design is by far the best thing about Quake and is some of the best stuff in the genre. The game's not very good in a lot of other aspects like the weak guns, low count of incredibly tanky enemies and the lack of variety in visuals. But the level design's fucking great.

>>340701072
mostly just level design imo
quake has a fair amount of variety and the levels don't overstay their welcome it's also short and you never get stuck or get bored, q2 feels like it drags in a lot of places especially with the backtracking and stuff

Actually you'd be surprised to know how much color there actually is in Quake. Although often cited as the muddy origin of gaming's brown monotomy Quake's levels are more diverse than they're given credit for.
Quakes got art assets that cover themes of
>metallic sci-fi plates
>gothic grotesque
>ancient stone
And although it makes use of a relatively narrow range of colors there are
>dark shades and naturalistic hues
>muddy greens
>blues
>coppers
>and brown
>>340705267
>All the new monsters that add a lot of variety to the combat(All Doom 1 monsters only fired linear shots)

I even think most of the maps are good to okay, with the exception of Chasm, Bloodfalls and Citadel.
>>340705420
that webm has a powerup that turns everything green for fucks sake. its like if i made a webm of doom with invulnerability, would you honestly think everything was white?
>>340707283

>>340707212
It just doesn't sound fun and it's not very satisfying to use to me.
More fun than the regular Nailgun though.I just imagine it as a representation of the monsters being so powerful that only the heavy ordinance really has an impact instead. Fits with the theme I guess
I think a lot of people who dislike Doom 2 are bad at the game.

Imagine Doom with verticality and rocket jumping but less weapons. The level design has overlapping sections that reduce the backtracking that was sometimes a pain in Doom.
It's biggest weaknesses in my opinion are the sometimes anticlimactic ends to the chapters. Only one of them has a boss due to time constraints.

Dismissing the game for its technical shortcomings is idiotic, though. They had to work with a limited color palette and I think they did an amazing job of it. The game being monotone in terms of color was an engine limitation, not a design choice.

>>340710598
Quake doesn't need bosses, half the enemies are the equivalent of a Doom boss.
I found the levels to look boring and the general artstyle to be uninspired.
Doom had a certain arcade-y look to it that fit well with the run-and-gun gameplay.
Even though there was now true 3d Quake looked more flat to me.
The only thing I really liked was the sounds. Not the music specifically, but how everything sounded. Very atmospheric.
>>340706904
Switch to Quakespasm. Porting Quake to Direct 3D comes with all the instability of Direct 3D. tl;dr DirectQ is crashy and you can't fix it.
>>340711534
That's half true I'd say. They were obviously limited by a 256 color palette but the tones they used were selected with the tone of the game in mind.
Don't get me wrong because I believe the art direction was very appropriately and well done, but they could have used more brighter colors. The question is whether that would have been fitting.

I never really pay attention to the animations but it's not bad. It's just as limited as all the other Doom monsters, and what they add to the gameplay makes up for animation faults.

Doom definitely had the more varied inspiration
>unironic 90's action movies
>thrash metal
>the crew's Dungeons & Dragons campaigns
>the Alien movies
>HR Giger (fusing metallic sci-fi and flesh)
Quake was inspired by the same elements science fiction, fantasy, and satanic imagery but married them with
>HP Lovecraft (cosmic horror)
>fantasy castles and dark factories
But it had a much more focused vision for that dark fantasy and horror that definitely sacrificed that arcade-y-ness for that godly atmosphere. That and the level design were enough to appeal to me personally but I can see where you're coming from.

the curved surfaces that any serious player, turns off? those are a visual spoof, the actual angles aren't high polygon they just appear to be so. you can shoot through and even fall through them which isn't worth fake curves. turn it off with /r_subdivisions 88. that said that really isn't a good reason to prefer one to the other. cpma is better than quake 3 for example and unreal tournament is good in a different more over the top sense

Just because its different from corridor after corridor or maze like level design you are used to doesn't mean it's devoid of content, maps have a lot of secrets and details that you probably have no knowledge about. The maps were made big because exploration was an important part of the game and not just running and gunning down the same mosters.

Exploration's a huge part of all old school FPS it's just that they don't waste your time with empty massive rooms that serve no purpose other than to waste your time. I get that the game's trying to be epic and immersive and all but that's completely lost on anyone who didn't play it when it was new. Same with backtracking, the backtracking in Quake is lightning fast because of the shortcuts you're constantly opening and the efficient use of space. It keeps up the pace and makes it feel like you're thoroughly exploring a small area, seeing it from all angles and all of that. Slowly backtracking through the same exact empty area is just dull.
>>340718207
>they don't waste your time with empty massive rooms that serve no purpose other than to waste your time
When does that even happen in quake?
>>340717769
>it can be accomplished in unreal, it can be accomplished in quake 1
No, it can't. You are brute forcing it in quake 1 and unreal, forcing the engine to account for the surfaces in terms of lighting and vis. This would slow the engine to a crawl in quake 1, less so in unreal.
You are not brute forcing it in quake 3. The curves appear at render-time, not at compile-time. They are not affected by the vis and light processes.
>you can replicate anything done in quake 3 in unreal and that is my point

Some of the maps in unreal have more interesting themes and setting than anything else ever tried on shooters, Quake is an action shooter, Unreal is exploration shooter, comparing them was your first mistake. Your cherrypicking only applies for some of the nature, outdoor large maps, but the starship, mine and temple themed maps all have "efficient" (more like limited in quake.) use of space.

Quake's only real downside is the limited weapon pool. I personally like the level design in Quake 1 a lot more than Doom 1, everything's a bit more fluid and has flow to it. Doom stages kinda force you to stop and search from time to time, Quake stages only really require you to have alright special awareness.

>>340705726
>I don't like the bad shotguns for Quake
The best way to look at them isn't as shotguns. The Q1 shotgun is like Doom's pistol except not as shitty- you start with it, but it's still a perfectly serviceable weapon and your only midrange hitscan option. The double barrel shotgun is more akin to an actual game shotgun- wide spread, high damage, but useless outside pissing range. Quake doesn't really have an SSG equivalent, although the super nailgun works well as a jack-of-all-trades as long as you can keep your ammo topped off.
>>340719378

And you keep making the same mistake, you are comparing two different philosophies of level design, Quake is mostly mazes and arena like enviroments, this is callled abstract level design, Unreal actually tries to picture what would an alien world look like, you only keep calling them empty because how bigger they are compared to quake maps but this isn't avalid argument because both try to do different things.

Shitty argument, because despite the years that have passed since Unreal came out, there isn't a single shooter that haves as much variety on the enviroments and level design as Unreal did, Unreal has aged much better than Quake as well, the game still looks great, from animations to lighting effects, sounds and music which give the game an atmosphere hardly found in other games, if i liked to cherrypick like an idiot i would say Quake level design is nothing but brown and yellow mazes, but i won't because i know what Quake is trying to do and how it's totally different experience from Unreal

I miss "open" maps with fixed enemy locations (as opposed to enemy closets continually swarming in). Quake 2 and Duke Nukem 3D come to mind for this. It seems engines have gotten so "advanced" that they can't actually render such open levels which is why modern levels are checkpointed, leaving the previous areas unrendered. Although D44m's aversion to this pleasantly surprised me but god damn trying to explore levels for secrets/collectibles while not being able to quicksave is a pain in the ass. Because at the time, they weren't Strogg crates, they were Earth military crates. They just re-used the symbol later on for Q2 presumably due to a lack of imagination.
They re-used more than the symbol, too, which a lot of people forget- the Strogg bases in Q2 look very similar to graphically updated Q1 Base levels, especially ones that use the wall triangle pattern that's everywhere in Q1 Base.

>It seems engines have gotten so "advanced" that they can't actually render such open levels which is why modern levels are checkpointed, leaving the previous areas unrendered.
no, that isn't how it works. just a consequence of fps being on consoles, which have no memory.
Doom 4 has bad levels, because enemy locations aren't statioinary. I really dislike enemies running all around me on the ceiling and shit-- it eliminates the point of level design and placing the enemy. The level just becomes a bunch of obstacles to run around.
I really, really dislike Doom 4 so much. le sigh.

Don't get that vibe whatsoever from Q2. Mostly industrial warzone during war. Doesn't seem mystical, dark, eldrich, magical, like the q1 base does. the triangle pattern does appear a lot in both games.

>Q1 base levels have this incredibly odd feel to them like it's a futuristic society that probably...is barely hanging on using black magic and shit. It seems like an already-ended world. Kinda dark souls ish.
I get what you mean (I hope). Even if Earth and Mars and everywhere in between was getting overrun by demons through the course of Doom, you still see familiar things- computer rooms, lounge rooms, towns and cities (regardless of how shitty Doom 2 is or is not), the UAC logo everywhere, familiar things in general. Quake base levels just sort of... are. There's no mountainous skybox or city looming in the distance, just the endless blue void. Computers are hulking, beeping monstrosities of black metal and silver wires. There aren't even any windows most of the time, not that there's anything out there to look at.
Doom's explanation for hell-stuff is scientists using Hell to transport materials- Quake's story is even more barebones. Hell is a concept everyone knows- how do you make a slipgate to dimensions no one has even so much as imagined?
Also, grunts and commanders in Q1. Doom's zombiemen are dead people reanimated by demonic spirits possessing their bodies- Quake's human enemies are still very much human and aware (even capable of speech) just with the pleasure centers of their brains wired up to go off every time they get a kill.Just like us, the players?

yep! remember thinking the same thing lol
you hit on the head. Quake's base levels hit a type of aesthetic that I've never seen in any game. I fucking love the gigantic beeping computers and stuff..kinda makes you wonder
are they already in hell, in a way? maybe some kind of silent hill type altered reality where they don't even realize how fucked up things are...that mystery is one of the things I really really love about this game. I wish I could still feel this way about games.
>>340722650
Really? I actually wondered whether or not it was fake while making that post I never actually looked into it before. Well Unreal has true mirrors then.
>>340701413
>>340701980
>>340704196
The only objective problem with Quake is the lack of music on the GOG release.
>>340722956
Music is easily patched back in with unofficial patches you would need anyway.
>>340722956
Steam too. I wonder if it's a problem with licensing, like they had with GTA San Andreas.
My only problem with Quake is that the enemies blend into the environment a little too much
>>340722938
yeah, it's literally a reversed copy of the room, a one-off rendering trick, and an entity that copies the player.
Because of the nature of BSP mapping, stuff like mirrors or portals was just incredibly demanding on CPU until 3drealms wrote special support for it into the prey engine. Unreal uses an entirely different approach to mapping, which excels at portals and shit.
>>340721876
Ranger is more durable (red armor, anyone?) and more nimble, but Doomguy has more powerful weaponry unless Ranger has a Quad Damage in which case Doomguy is fucked.
Unless you're counting Q3, in which case Doomguy is stronger. Counting that though means all the oddities with the stories for Ranger and Wrack- despite the info for Ranger saying he's gone a bit looney, his ingame taunts are nothing but plain Marine stuff that barely mentions Cthulhu and friends, while Wrack is supposedly another slipgate explorer (there's more than one?) who experienced the things that Ranger actually did, like fighting Shub-Niggurath.
>>340723109
>I wonder if it's a problem with licensing
No. Quake's music is owned by id software so if you license quake you license the music.
Quake's music is cd audio only so they simply didn't build in support for it by using a source port. you get the original executables
>>340723182
>which excels at portals and shit.
Yep. Again which is why UE1 is best, functionality-wise. Also
>being able to customize HUD
>being able to customize everything about bots
>mutators
>setting menus per mod/mutator
UT's inherent modularity was a labor of love, and it's extent of modularity is basically extinct. I highly doubt UT4 is gonna come close despite being open source.
>>340723109
iirc the music was only included on the game disc, which is why Quake 1 & 2 have options to play music off whatever CD is in the drive. It's not a licensing issue, I doubt Trent Reznor would give a shit about it.
>>340723182
Prey was really cool
>>340723540
no doubt. it took some serious work to make shit like that happen.
it was expected to sell like...literally 10x as many copies as it did. :(
>>340722805
Big beepy computers are a great way to take up a certain amount of space while telling the player there are SCIENCEY THINGS going on. HL1 does the same thing with its giant reel to reel computers and punch-card terminals.
Another thing about a world on the verge of death- consider the player's weaponry. Doomguy gets a chaingun and multiple types of plasma and energy weapons, as well as powered armor (and an enclosed helmet!), night vision goggles, a portable computer- Ranger's arsenal mostly consists of stuff you can get at Home Depot, and the only 'fancy' weapon he gets- the Thunderbolt- looks like it was jury-rigged together in a blacksmith's shop and is only found deep in the depths of the dimensions he travels to.
>are they already in hell, in a way? maybe some kind of silent hill type altered reality where they don't even realize how fucked up things are
Completely possible. That's the fun thing- pretty much anything is possible because you're dealing with the Old Ones instead of Lucifer's underlings. Is the whole game Ranger going nuts and shooting everything he sees, with the tentaclebeasts calling out to him being represented by his trek through the levels? What happened to the rest of the fucking planet?
>>340723532
>tfw if q1 had supported crazy portal shit like that we could have had truly lovecraftian non-euclidean mapping with rooms being bigger on the inside and shit
The closest thing is how completely fucked up Quake's sense of scale is. Enemies and the player are midgets because some of them were intended to be stretched vertically like with Doom, and some of the maps are squashed for the same reason- yet other parts of maps are designed to be looked at 1:1 and become too tall when stretched.

AD is tons of fun but goddamn is the map quality all over the place. Cruical Error and Bogbottom can fuck right off, doubly so because they're two of the maps with runes in them.
Hopefully the new maps coming out this summer will be on the level of Brick Disorder and Necromancer's Keep.
>>340725439
I did like Crucial Error, but yeah it's one of the weaker ones. The really great thing about it though is how all the new things feel right.
The new enemies, which are mostly wizards, look like they actually belong in Quake. Changing the shotguns to shoot projectiles instead of hitscanning is great too.
>>340725560
The new enemies are from Hexen, IIRC. Hexen 2 in particular given that it runs on the Quake engine.
Cruical was alright I guess but it felt like it dragged on way, way too long and the whole unmarked vent to get the other things to get the rune was super lame, and the author did the exact same thing with Bogbottom (hiding the macguffins to get the rune until you've triggered them to appear), unlike what the author of lavamountain did (leave the bones and hint books around for the player to find before they've started the knight's quest, that way they know there's something to be looking for).
The projectile shotguns are pretty neat as is the Widowmaker triple barrel, and thankfully the map design rarely left me wishing for a midrange hitscan weapon.
>>340701072
Overall, quake is always better than doom in all aspect including MP mode.
Doom is basically a stepping stone of the dev team to make something more awesome. You don't linger in the past, so you can create something new.
Doom 2 is fucking dogshit, and I personally hate the super shotgun since it ruined the perfect balance from the 1st game
Doom 1 is perfection because even though Sandy did most of the level design after episode 1, he still made relatively good maps and levels, and then he COMPLETELY SHAT THE BED in doom 2.
Some of the maps in Doom 2 seriously feel like shitposts in how offensively bad they are. So yes, Quake 2 is easily better than Doom 2, but that's not very hard

The reason I don't like Quake is the guns.
They just don't feel as good as the Doom guns to me, and enemies don't react in a satisfying manner, probably due to limitations of early 3D.
If they made an HD version like Serious Sam I think I would like the games a lot more.
Q2 almost managed to have better guns, but none of them had a muzzle flash and that bothered the hell out of me

But hey at least the GRAFFIX look cool!! lol technology! Except all they did was make grey hallways and almost nothing else.
I heard Resurrection of Evil was actually good however. The problem is that you've probably already become sick and tired of Doom 3 even before the first playthough was even over so you might not ever give it a chance. They had their chance. YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE AND YOU BLEW IT.

>>340712906
Dowtown is a cool map
>>340733839
>Why wasn't it slammed in reviews at the time?
Because for most people it was the first time they could buy DOOM.
DOOM 1 was only available via mail order aside from Episode 1 that was released as shareware. It wasn't until Ultimate DOOM in 1995 that it got an actual retail release.
DOOM 2 was an actual commercial release from it's initial release in 1994.
It was a lot more convenient to buy DOOM 2 than DOOM. So a lot more people got to experience it.
>>340733839
The reason is because the gameplay is the same shit they only added few monsters and SSG and honestly if not for the fact that vast majority of megawads are made for D2 it would be forgotten and dead.
>>340706327

There is some color in quake. But there is also a extreme amount of piss/earth color everywhere for all the tiles.
I am not sure if most of the color is lacking to get the light system working, or if they just didn't have good color palettes to add saturation somewhere.
I think the best accomplishment in Quake is that since everything is Earth like, everything thats a different color, stands out a lot. Like the rust and blood red. Or the pink sky. Or the metal pillars.
>>340735942
this is the worst post ive ever seen on \v\
Don't know about better or not, but Quake had some of the best and creepiest enemy designs. Pic especially related.
So was anyone from the original DOOM team involved in NuDOOM?
Both Carmack's left. Romero left. Sandy left. Hall left.
It's amazing that it turned out as good as it did.
>>340711534
Once you can go past 20-30 colors, and have dithering, there simply exist no limitations any more.
A lot of the Quake palette is intentionally shitty. So that Runes, Glowing tiles, Shamblers and explosions stands out, by a lot.
