Speaking as someone who loved the first game, and doesn't know shit about crowdfunding or any of the drama that's been going on with Double Fine, I truly hope this is a good game.

That said, what are the chances it will be good?

Tim Schafer is just going to take the money and run. The Psychonauts 2 scam will be his finest work yet and he'll retire from the money he stole through the crowdfunding.
>>
Hard to tell. An heavily ignored but major important part about artistic mediums like vidya, film, cartoons and etc. is the handling of money.

The problem with artists and many crowdfunding project artist is that these people simply don't understand how to appropriately divide the money and how to fund it. You could have millions of dollars to spend and waste half of it on celebrity voice acting. Not to mention too much freedom with no implemented deadlines could lead to a lot of pointless reworking or plain laziness.

The artist makes the magic but the accountant is the one who knows how much magic is possible.

Putting aside
>3.3 million

Its honestly not looking too good. Since going the crowd funding route Double Fine has been dropping in quality. Spacebase DF9 is literally an alpha pretending to be a finished game, Broken Age was a disappointment, Costume Quest 2 was also a disappointment, Massive Chalice had some interesting ideas but was still just a shallow XCOM clone, although its nice to be able to play Grim Fandango on a modern computer without having to jump through a shitton of hoops to make it stable the game is still buggy, and the remaster of Day of the Tentacle was pointless.

Best case scenario Psychonauts 2 is gonna be decent but no where near as good as the first game. Worst case scenario its a Gearbox-tier shitshow only with LOL SO QUIRKY XD humor instead of memes.
>>
>>340693420
>You could waste all the money on celebrities
No. Anon. Goddamnit. No.

What happens with large-scale projects like this is that you need to know what can be benefited by additional man hours and what can't, and you need to lay out a plan so you don't accidentally bottle-neck your project and wind up paying huge overages while you wait for a clog in the pipeline. If one programmer can do something in four hours, two programmers can't then do the same thing in two hours by working together - in fact they may slow each other down if coordination is bad. That's why amateurs often waste substantial amounts of money. It's not because they spent it on hookers and blow.

That said, absolutely everything about the Psychonauts 2 crowdfunding project is notoriously shady. Most of it reads like a scam, all the promises being made are tied to shell companies and likely won't materialize because the shell companies will cease to exist as soon as they're called on to meet their obligations. So no, no it probably won't be a good game.

I think that expecting it to be as good as the original would be setting myself up for disappointment.

But It's such a fun concept and I've always lamented that they never had a chance to make more. So even if it's half as interesting as the first Psychonauts, I'll still be glad that they got the chance to make it.
>>
I am willing to gamble everything on this game being cancelled.

Tim Schafer can not manage a project.

There's no way this game will be on the level of the first one.

You'll be waiting into the 2020s if Double Fine seriously wanted this game a true sequel.

Either way, Tim will go broke trying to finish this turkey and will ransack some funding body or panhandle for more money.

Mark these words: Psychonauts 2 will not see the light of day.

But anon, early access wasn't bringing in a steady stream of profitable income right through to (and past) release, so why even bother working on it? That's how it works, right? I put out a half finished product and you pay me every month as if it was finished, until I finish it and you pay me again.

Tim Schafer might have had some kind of talent at some point, but now he's just a social "justice" maniac who accuses minorities of being white men when they disagree with him. Do people still care about gamergate? I mean, aside from the major personalities who profit from and depend on that shit like Brianna Wu and Milo. Tim Schafer was just one of dozens of people who naively bought into the media narrative that the journalists cooked up when people started pointing fingers at them. I don't think he was ever a major character in the whole thing, so why would he still care?

I liked the first game but 2 is going to suck.

Tim Sczhaffenstein is going to bolt with everyone's money and then claim they need more and run another campaign, just you wait and see.

Tim has proven to be terrible at action games. It seems that he realizes this, and hasn't made a action oriented game in a while now, as well as fixing the meat circus in the steam release of psychonauts, so who knows what could happen to the sequal.

I sort of see him in the same like as Chris Roberts. Both made awesome games 20 years ago then failed when went independent. Tim failed to a lesser degree than chris, and still stayed in the industry though. Now, both are racking in the money based on past reputation, while people ignore their recent failures. At least Tim has shown to actually release his games.

There's no possible way this will be good, and you could tell the second the expected goal was literally "3.3 million dollars."

Nigger 3.3 million dollars could only make one half of a shitty adventure game, why the fuck does anyone think that it would be enough to fund a game that would live up to Psychonaughts?

And a good chunk of the public seemed to understand, too, seeing how it took multiple extensions before Tim got his money.

>>
>>340707681
Well, according to my looking up the budget for the first game, the budget was between 11 and 15 million dollars.

So if they can convince investors to triple the amount given to them on Fig, then they have enough money to match a 2005 game. Keep in mind, games budgets have inflated since then, so that amount probably wouldn't be enough to create a sequel that's fully better than the first.

What are the odds of that? After fucking up with two games out of three so far, critically and sales wise, will investors go for them?

Yeah Ill be happy with any sequel good or bad just to see another game in the setting. I think a big part of the charm was the summer camp for psychic kids though.

Summer Camp is such an underused comfy vidya setting in general.

I'm still surprised that Sony backed them up on Rhombus of Ruin, so who knows?

Maybe the experience built over the years and improvements in technology count for something, or maybe we'll always be grasping at nostalgia goggles. I'd still like to see what they can come up with.
>>
>>340708715
How incredibly similar is incredibly similar? Generally there's no laws against making a game with the same mechanics as another game- there've been tons and tons of 'almost not quite' games like that. Hell, FPS's used to be called 'Doom Clones' for several years because so many of them used the doom engine or a derivative and did the exact same gameplay style without ever trying to mix it up.

But reusing characters or settings from something else is a no-no (unless it's like dungeons and dragons or something). That's why fan games get shut down more often then not. Knockoff characters are fine, though.

No, if people aren't buying your game in early access then it's a good barometer for how many people are going to buy it when it's done. Thats what early access is, it's a way to see if people even want the game you're working on. If you're in the early stages of a project that is potentially going to cost a few million dollars and you realize nobody actually wants the end-product, do you really think it's smart to keep that project running?

Anon, it's not that people didn't buy it, it's that they didn't have a steady stream of sales coming in every single month to the point where they were making a healthy profit off it. Early access is supposed to be a way to get some extra funding while also getting some beta testers playing your game for free, it is not supposed to be a way to generate steady profit with a half finished product.

For the first game?

I think the PS2 version might have had some issues with stuttering, but I don't know how much they've updated for the PS4. 360 ran the Xbox version alright, minus a color glitch that could appear on Raz's outfit.

The Steam version's probably had the most wrinkles ironed out.

Why would you ever do that?

I'm not asking sarcastically, I really want to know how you can trust them.

First off, you are right about Kickstarter. They have to give SOMETHING in return, and if they don't, then the person who took the money is open to lawsuits.

But second off, Tim knew that, so he made his OWN site (Or one of his friends did, someone he knows owns Fig) and got money through that instead.

So he has NO real obligations.

I'd hope people have an idea of what they might possibly be getting into after the fiascos behind Broken Age's development, but if you are willing to accept the risks and are ready to handle such disappointment if need be, more power to you because what's at stake here is worth the risk.
