>>340687690
No, its either dying or prone to fail Sub based games, pay2win cash shop games, or korean grind fest (generally coupled with a cash shop)
Tons of hype then a total crash, I'm looking at you Blade and Soul.
Warframe if you consider that an MMO
Blade & Soul's single player mode is worth playing, and while you're doing that you'll most likely do some MP content as well.
Current MMOs are all trash except for the really old ones like Ultima
good upcoming MMOs include Albion Online (complete sandbox) and Camelot Unchained (Realm vs Realm vs Realm large scale PvP)
>>340687690
I had fun with FFXIV for about 4-5 months, and this is someone who is very against paying a monthly.
Blade and Soul is really fun combat, shame about the rest of everything else.
TERA has good T&A, and decent combat. Pretty world, too, but certainly is "Go kill X of Y creature."
Black Desert is clearly a korean grinder, but it really is a gorgeous game with decent atmosphere.

Most MMOs are worth playing if you simply have friends. I'm not talking about normie friends who play a few hours weekly and you end up outlevelling them too much, I mean no lifers just like you who don't mind playing at least 6 hours each day.
The second thing is(what I did in Tera and BnS) is simply getting to the max as soon as possible and joining the most active 4chin guild(for Tera it was the /a/ guild, in BnS it was a multiboard guild). After that all you need to do is slowly join the circlejerk(every guild has them, you'll notice them straight away) and then I ended up playing 10 hours a day with them grinding dungeons while talking about all kind of random shit on mumble. It was pretty fun.
>>340689112
The game is great but it would be so much better if they just implemented the bloody spellcrafting system we'll never ever see. A proper duelling system and arena-style battlegrounds wouldn't be bad either. The Kvatch Arena is perfect in size.
>>340689112

>>340687690
The only decent online RPGs are the instanced ones. "Vast and living open world" is just an overpriced decoration nowadays, even on big and popular MMOs most of the actual action happens on instances with a group of players that got automatically together by using a party queue system.
Right now I'm playing Dungeon Fighter Online. It is an old game but still pretty fun.
>>340690267
Tera was not so terrible. The game gives you double xp perks for free for like 3 days. Used some levelling guide and got to max in like 25~ hours.
BnS on the other hand, holy shit. Levelling took fucking forever, same 3 fucking quests over and over again. Could not even grind any mobs for quick xp, you basically had to do the quests.
>>340690489
Fatigue ruins this game for me every time I try to play it. Either I don't get to play as much as I want to, or I start feeling obligated to log in and use all my fatigue everyday and the game feels like a second job and so I lose interest.

It is far more fun to take it easy and forget about that thing. I don't even remember the last time I fully burned my FP on my main character, even when I spend the whole night playing with it.
Endgame is focused on dungeons with very few rooms but with fairly long battles (so, more time per FP), so FP is irrelevant most of the time.

>>340691461
Everything in XIV is decent to great (the soundtrack is the best thing about it, it manages to make even the more dull encounters enjoyable), except the community and the gameplay.
The mediocre combat would be more enjoyable if the itemization wasn't so fucking shitty, it might as well not even exist. Plus the guaranteed welfare updates and being indirectly forced by the community to read/watch guides really kills it to me.
You have to be either a hardcore raider always ready for the next challenge before people start to publish guides, a casual ERPing while waiting for the next welfare patch, or someone that plays the game once every six months to enjoy the story. Any attempt of "midcore playing" XIV is sadly pointless.

FFXI got a spin-off on android and will get a port/remake/something in the future too.
Has anyone tried:
Gloria Victis? Been in beta for awhile, is just now on steam.
>>340688629
I'd add to that list:
Crowfall
The two Darkfall reboots/revamps (one is straight old Darkfall, the other is adding "more sand to the box" inspired by UO stuff)
Life is Feudal
Chronicles of Elyria (just had kickstarter so long ways away)
Shards Online
Das Tal
There are more, that's off the top of my head. All of them could turn out to be godawful, just saying they fit mostly into the "sandbox" type mold.
>>340692991
I'm not a backer but had kept up with Albion news for a bit - one thing i didn't like was pvp looked a lot like zerg vs zerg. However, like you said, the sandbox stuff looks neat so far and I enjoy their artstyle. If it's half as fun as what they promise i'd buy it at launch, assuming I can find a guild so I'm not edgy loner that quits in a month.
>>340691993
BDO is garbage, if you get into it now you will never catch up to the End-Game PvPers unless you poopsock. The combat is PvE combo spam or PvP combo spam, the latter being locked behind having better gear than your opponent. The end game is non-existent bar mindless grind, and they removed all penalties for PvPing, so there's no reason to even bother doing it anymore.
Only people left are desperately hoping things get better, levelling alts because there's no content left, poopsockers who are still grinding all day like they have been doing since release, or casual scum.

>>340694061
BDO IS garbage, and even with poopsocking you won't catch up to the end-game pvpers. it would require both poopsocking and paying real money and even then you'll be behind.
To be fair, BDO's pay2win isn't as absurd as ArcheAge but it's still there. Being less shitty doesn't make something not-shitty.
Also should note, BDO is not remotely a "sandbox" game but I don't want to be a jargon faggot.
The character creator is pretty neat, however. And the game is really pretty (assuming someone can stomach korean garbage). Still wildly un-fun at max level without shelling out quite a bit of money combined with being a neet.
I have a friend who plays very casually and roleplays nonstop. He's a nice dude but is also a massive literal faggot. So there is one endorsement for BDO - casual homosexuals enjoy it.

One of my biggest regrets is missing out on playing RO in its heyday.
It looks super fun but it seems like the newest actual version is garbage and dead and all the private servers and shit are equally dead.
I was really hoping that ToS would live up to the hype cause it definitely seemed like the same sort of game, but then it came out and it's just a buggy and laggy mess.
;_;
If you like an amazingly interesting story with great missions/attention to detail and are willing to put up with an OK combat system, The Secret World is great.
Basic premise, modern world except every conspiracy is true. Less cringy than you'd expect from the shorthand version. One of the few horror-themed MMO's. Most of it winds up being hack n' slash but there are actually pretty spooky moments if you look for them, and the investigation missions (puzzle quests) have some of the most ridiculous solutions. You'll be translating ancient hebrew, morse code, killing yourself to talk to dead parrots and all kinds of other shit.
Servers are sorta low population these days but the game puts you in low population instances anyways to maintain the horror atmosphere. Don't have any of my cool screenshots since I wiped my PC but have this.

There is a patron mode that is essentially p2w as it gives extra money and exp. But the economy is so fucked anyways, everyone already has a 65 and money is everywhere.
It's got some fantastic scenery too.
Great animations for NPC's.
All the PVP is high tier only. No lv50. No lv20. You're either 65 or not.

Pretty much no. So many MMOs came out so quickly trying to emulate WoW and so many were complete failures, I think companies lost their appetite for MMOs. The only ones in production are shitty kickstarter ones.
>>340695684
When you're on a map where you can build, you find amazing group dynamics and on-the-fly cooperation. It's actually kinda amazing when twelve people can independently do their own thing, yet simultaneously work as a single unit to complete a task.
Minecraft is fun. So sorry it doesn't have elves with huge knockers jiggling about.
>>340695878
I know it's basically beating a dead horse but I really wish EVE was more interesting moment to moment and didn't require so much time investment to be worthwhile.
It seems super cool especially with all the factions and player interactions, but every time I've spun up a trial account I get bored so quickly. Maybe if I had a second monitor to toss up a show or something on it in between bits where I actually need to be doing something in-game it'd be better.

EVE is probably the most impressive MMO on the market, sandboxes have always been my favorite. I don't play it actively anymore, your complaints are accurate. It's not a game about dogfighting or moment-to-moment action, it's a huge scale sandbox where you can play the game so many different ways. Unless you care about the economy or sovereignty though it's unlikely to keep you hooked, those are the big draws of sandboxes. I desperately want a decent fantasy sandbox, or even a ground-level scifi sandbox like SWG. Spaceships alone don't do it for me personally, but if you like spaceships EVE is the GOAT.
EVE doesn't require a huge time investment though, join a corp, get in voice chat, they can get you going and you can probably be doing something useful within a few days.
>>340696171
Haven't read any, sorry friend. I'm not much of an EVE lore buff.

I'd agree that minecraft isn't technically an mmo, but 1.9 pvp is really fun.
>build secret base with traps
>raid people, make rude signs
>wait for them to find you to take revenge
>watch them die to traps as you feel clever
>literally a room labeled "diamond storage" full of traps and they fall for it everytime
of course it normally goes like:
>raid someone
>they use hacks and find your secret base asap, murder you repeatedly
but it's still fun when it plays like it should.
A trick i always use is to have a room decorated like a bedroom with my bed, but my "real" bed is hidden so when cunts break in and raid my shit, murder me and destroy the bed (thinking I'll pop back at spawn), i respawn in my secret "ready room" with weapons/armor and can race back and avenge myself.
It's super fucking dorky but secret base hiding/finding is fun for me. Too bad I'm shit at all other aspects of the game.
>>340696264

>>340696134
I've been playing Eve for about a week and a half and this is my main complaint. I haven't been able to do much of anything except mine incompetently because I've been waiting for my skills to train. And since skills raise over time according to how you queue them, I haven't been able to make my mining or industry more efficient because that would mean it would add days to my queue when I'm trying to train into PvP.
At least I joined a good corp that has a lot of programs in place to help new players out. When I need something like a skill book I just put a contract out and they send me what they need. Their fleets are newbie friendly but I still don't want to join if all I'll be able to fly is a condor or atron, and poorly at that.

For fucks sake, don't you remember what happened last time they "upgraded" Darkfall?
Has anyone played any of the swgemu servers? Either the main one or the various offshoots? I played awhile back on the main one and development is good but very very slow - recently went looking on the swgemu subreddit but it's a lot of drama involving various shards and it wasn't clear (from an outside perspective, anyhow) which servers weren't complete shit.
The main one, "basilisk", has plenty of people playing but also a super-fucked economy due to the ability to have so many characters on an account - so everyone that's a vet is self-sustaining. Great for testing purposes but kind of shit for actual gameplay.
I... just want to be an imperialbro and bounty hunt jedis again. And mostly die but I'm ok with that.
>>340694772
Nah, you can catch up, since even the poopsockers have fallen off with their grind nowdays, but you will never EVER be in the top 1%, you can make the top 5% though.
>>340696974
>For fucks sake, don't you remember what happened last time they "upgraded" Darkfall?
I do!
HOWEVER, "this time" aventurine has nothing to do with it. They licensed DF out to two different independent dev teams, mainly fans and some financial backers. Like I was saying, one is straight up redo of DF 1.0, the other is Darkfall with added shit.
You're 100% correct that either or both may turn out to be shit but since it's not like they're asking for money yet it's ok to at least be cautiously hopeful. Darkfall on paper is fucking great, i'd argue that it was mismanagement and incompetence that ruined it.
Then again I'm used to being disappointed so I'm immune at this point.
I'd pay for a non grindfest Silkroad.
Or maybe a relaunch of Dekaron/2moons.
>>340695593
Nothing will ever replicate what made these old games so great: the playerbase. Ragnarok was popular not just because it was a good game with great soundtrack, but because of every single player playing it.
RO had lots of features that are considered bad or simply pointless nowadays (no party finder, risk of loot/kill stealing, absolutely no direction of what to do, no quest book so you had to make notes by yourself, bosses with long respawn cooldown, the MVP reward system, etc), but they worked because the community supported them, and the devs released even more features focused on that growing community.
Modern MMOs are designed for a completely different audience, that is why we now have things like party finder, instanced content overshadowing open world content (if available at all, fully instanced games are quite popular nowadays), hand-holding tutorials, too much info on screen, single-player-oriented leveling, etc. The new audience want them, even demand them when they play older games that are still alive.
Before, everything was new and there are no set rules other than "lots of grinding ahead", so features are created and people adapted themselves to work with them. Now people expect specific features and the dev team deliver them on release (creating the "wow clone" effect).

Two different "redos/reboots/whatever".
One is called, um, Rise of Agon. The other is "New Dawn.".
One of them is in fact doing the same shit with the skilll system like you said. The other is placing caps, similar to old UO. And of course right now i forget which is which since i'm stupid, so that's not helpful. But they are a ways off anyhow.
One is going for straight up redo of darkfall, the other is adding a bunch of shit, big ones being localized banking, better housing and guild territory controls, caps on skills, blah blah.

I'm hopeful for a lot of the changes but a lot of it (especially pvp stuff) sounds godawful so far.
Still too early to tell, I could only stomach a month of WoD so I'm clearly not the target WoW audience anymore.
>>340699794
Yes. And people who DID become Jedi were overpowered as a motherfucker.

It was very difficult yes.
And what's better, there is a bounty hunter class who's job is to hunt jedis. So imagine the scenario:
>nigger kid wants to be a jedi
>works like a motherfucker to become one
>goes to the cantina and pulls out his lightning saber to show off
>half the players send messages to each other telling their friends and guildmates that there is a jedi in the cantina
>2 minutes later an army of bounty hunters shows up to kick his ass
it was damn fun, let me tell you.

Depends on when you mean, but in original pre-cu/nge SWG it was a big grind but not impossible. Jedis aren't enabled yet on the main swgemu server, last i saw, but are on a bunch of the offshoots (I don't know more than that).
I do remember, from retail SWG, that jedi were very powerful at least at first. Back when no one knew how they were unlocked, but i was taking hard classes at the time so my memories could be hazy/incorrect.
>>340699927
http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Jedi_(pre-NGE)#Becoming_a_Jedi
>>340699927
You had to craft everything in your lightsaber yourself, also if you were a jedi then you were tagged for having permadeath. If you died, that was it. Your character became a force ghost and could no longer log in. Thing is, a jedi could take on dozens of other players and come out alive.
>>340699927
It was actually random, you just had to train skills and if you are lucky, after a certain point you'd get a quest that let you begin your Jedi quest. Thing about jedi though, although they are OP as FUCK, when you killed one, you had the satisfaction of knowing you just permakilled someone character with hundreds to thousands of hours on it. As well as the rest of the server knowing and whispering you death threats. Good times....
>>340700041
I forget where i saw them, but there was a collection of fun bounty hunter vs jedi stories somewhere. My favorite was a big RP wedding that some players had where an elusive jedi got invited - i forget how but it got triggered on the consoles so a ton of bounty hunters stormed the event to get him, creating a shitload of death, chaos, and forum drama.

>Their fleets are newbie friendly but I still don't want to join if all I'll be able to fly is a condor or atron, and poorly at that.
I would highly discourage this thinking. Go out with them, explode, try to learn what you could have done better, and do it again. Be a cute newbie when appropriate (don't interrupt battle comms with "OMG I'M DYING! FC WUT DO") and people will even shower you with isk.
mainstream mmos are bad because they have to be cash cows to compete with other cash cows
there are good mmos that aren't huge though
>>340699443
>tfw i'm in that screenshot, didn't even notice at first
>>340687817
Agreed, ToS was my only hope and boy, did they fuck up.
Now all I can do is casually play the same meh MMOs I've been playing for 5 years now.
Guys, help. I'm only level 33 and I wandered off...
I found some kind of portal.
>>340700465
To add onto this, I guarantee you that the fleet is filled with newbro frigs who have no idea what they are doing. A lot of those people aren't going to learn anything because they won't try to learn anything. So you not being there getting practical battle experience and learning more about the game/how to be a better pilot, actually hurts your alliance more than it helps.
>>340700465
I'll join their standing fleet one of these days then. They're a very active corp and they're always sending out alerts for PvP operations, so it shouldn't be hard at all to get some action in this weekend

>trusting gook shit nowadays
The Silkroad and Ragnarok days are over, friend. Those yellow bastards are only looking to suck your wallet dry now, they don't give enough of a fuck to and don't even know how to make a decent game.

>>340687690
All the MMOs I'm interested in are all Korean/Asian only that will probably never get localised, even if they were already planning on getting localised.
Closers Online for example. It was supposed to come out some time last year but it looks like zero progress has been made localising it from last April or something.
I'm also interested in Peria Chronicles too. I don't even think that's out in Korea, despite the fact it was supposed to come out last year too...
Do subscription fees make for a better MMO community?
>>340695234
I couldn't get into NWN after getting to like... Oh just over halfway to cap. It was just the same damn thing all day every day, frustrating.
>>340700750
Good shit. Another idea would be to make notes while on fleet. Note things you don't understand, and ask about them afterwards.
I used to FC and have a bunch of new players in my fleets and the lack of comms discipline to to random noob questions was suuuuper frustrating. So try to just go along with the flow, note something you don't understand, and then ask when it's appropriate, not in the middle of the fleet.
>>340700895
I and many others enjoyed it at the time, before they expanded it with European content and tried to cashcow it. Another similar one that I preferred over Silkroad was Kal Online.
>>340700959
I really did like the community of FFXIV more than any other F2P/P2W MMO I've ever played; but that's because they aren't filled with the community that >>340700807 mentioned caters to.

>They're pretty shit, but at least they're PRETTY shit.
I tried all of them except Black Desert and I literally couldn't even bother playing them for a week. I do feel like they might be enjoyable MMOs but somehow they just aren't for me.
Maybe I just grew out of MMOs or something? Lord knows I don't have the time to grind and farm for hours at a time like in highschool.
>>340701119
Guess I'll just dance infront of it.
>>340701202
to play asian mmos you need some kind of a goal.
>>340701101

>>340701042
Yeah, they have a pretty indepth wiki with a section describing their comms for new playerss, I was reading over it earlier today.
Atlantica has a unique battle system and is still getting updates
EVE is EVE, but the new expansions are good.
Crowfall is looking good
I'm still fucking mad about what they did to firefall
>>340700475
Good mmos such as?
>>340695878
What does GW2 offer? It's a lot to download.
>>340701408
>Crowfall is looking good
I started out optimistic for Crowfall untill they started all their founder shit. Looks like it's gunna go the way of ArcheAge fast
>>340687690
GW2 and PSO2 are the two mmos i keep coming back to. not counting the month or two i resub to wow when a new expansion drop
>>340701280
yeah don't get hit
Decided to try leveling in GW2 because I bought it at release but didn't really play it.
I am enjoying it, the game naturally has you work with other players but it lacks communication with them. The personal story is neat because, at least at the earlier parts I am at I don't feel like some Chosen Mary Sue. I am just kind of a character in the world. That probably changes later though.
>>340697963
Personally, it's one of my favourite MMOs. It's not even remotely great by any stretch of the imagination but it's very comfy.
Like... I dunno, it feels like I could easily idle away my time playing that game if I wanted to.

I'm playing project gorgon which is alpha but playable, there's really a lot of them tho. You just gotta look harder. I got that one from a list some guy was posting in these threads for a while and I didn't save it.
All current MMOs suck, however the only one worth it is FFXIV hands down
>>340702032
Aw well, at least my character starts somewhat humbly I guess.
Is there no variety past that point? I like being a Charr engineer and warband leader.
Lord of the Rings Online is really underrated. It's got an amazing world.
I really want to play something like that for the first time again but I can't think of what.
>>340702276

Then the leveling really bored me. Might try again some day.
>>340702287

>>340702173
is there pvp in project gorgon?
I haven't kept up with it but everything i've read in spurts sounds like a lot of fun. The dude making it (maybe it's him and his wife? i forget) seems like a cool guy.
I'm not a big ganker or anything, just feels so weird playing a mmo where there's no potential danger from players.

Project Gorgon is fucking awful. Just Asheron's Call instead
I kinda wish MMOs weren't so good looking. It's a weird thing to say but a lot of MMOs take up absolutely massive amounts of data now, easily 30GB or more.
If you don't mind the simpleness of it and the great grinding battle, Domo has always been fun.
The community is almost 100% enjoyable, there have been fun events in the past like the Chinese New Year having a crazy huge and powerful boss right outside the town gates, or the big firework celebration shortly before it went down the first time.
>>340702639

I just remember the mayor Gaben and a cool rodian smuggler who I'd buy lots of drugs from.
Anyone have any recommendations for grinding MMOs or just grindy games in general?
I really just wanna play something where I can watch the numbers go up real nice.
Was thinking of maybe reinstalling D3 but I remembered I never bought RoS which supposedly makes the game worth playing beyond the base story, and last time I tried Path of Exile (probably a year or so ago at this point) I got real bored of the "so complex and deep!" character tree shit pretty fast, plus all the de-sync stuff.
>>340704565
I saw a banner ad for it and I thought it was a phone game so I ignored it completely.
MMOs were totally dead by 2013, killed by F2P.
>>340702575
Not to mention at roughly level 60 your "personal story" gets taken over by some dumbass NPC and you just become his fucking secretary while he saves the world and everyone loves him.
Honestly I loved GW2 up until level 40-60 and then it became a fucking slog and the story sucks horribly. And from what I've read the post release story is even worse (and now you have to pay money to play the "Season 1" story missions)..
>>340703485
If it's your first time then you will probably enjoy it. There is a sizable grindwall at level cap--primarily for reputations to get access to BiS items--so it's more about if you can handle tedium or not.
I played for a bit during vanilla, quit, came back, quit again, then played a little bit during Storm Legion. The dungeons are very fun and I like their version of Heroics with how they alter the actual dungeon itself. Raids were probably the most genuinely exciting I've ever been through.

>>340705435
There is no first person.Only zooming and it will ruin the combat if you do.
>>340705498
Oh jeez, it's been a while. Let's see...
If I recall, you can move while casting skills if you hold the button down? I think charging them also increases damage, for some skills at least?
You basically want to slightly kite everyone, dancing just on the very edge of your range.
Also, you skills have a variety of effects that can buff you or debuff enemies. You wanna use the right skills at the right time. Like, opening up with an ice arrow is a good idea so when a monster starts to chase you it starts with lowered movement speed. Then slam'em with the skill that lowers their defense and then pepper them with shots as they inch closer.
You can also have a sub class, if ya didn't know. You get MOST of the skills of the second class as well as access to their weapon. Some weapons have a natural synergy with other weapons, which lets you gain a few special skills.
For example, bows and harps work well together. Harps are bard weapons, which are the healer class. Since you're on the backlines as a bowman anyway, being a healer isn't a bad subclass to take as well. Apply buffs and healing to yourself and others while applying damage and debuffs to enemies, it's a good deal.
Check out your Envoy's Path thing carefully, see what skills you get from other weapons. I think the bowman's other weapon synergy is with the sword and shield? That might be good for solo play, increase your survivability a little bit.
This is the only MMO worth looking forward to.

>>340687690
No.
The only MMO's being made are themepark bullshit that don't really have a living world you can do shit with, defeating the purpose.
I'm hoping soon people will look at shit like Rust, DayZ, and EVE and realize that what people want these days is a simulation, not a fantasy book you can be a nameless asshat in.

>>340688741
Sandboxes are pretty boring really. All "player created content" boils down to ganking outside of the nearest town.
Sandbox elements are good but not when there's NO structured content to do just random mobs to grind and people just end up PK'ing all day.
I mean I've only played The Secret World and I enjoyed that, me and my best bud played it for 2 days straight since we barely get to play games together since he's in the navy.
Any other good ones?

>>340697672
What's the game at the very start?
>>340707804
I disagree with your main point but agree that it does turn into a gankbox more often than not. There are various essays on possible methods to incorporate consequences to "law breaking" and ways to have incentives to not just being a bitch to everyone in those types of games -- as often there really is no benefit to working together if you feel you're stronger.
A lot of that involves making them more of a virtual world, complete with player-run territories and associated laws.
We're not at that point yet but i do firmly believe the future of online mmos is headed there eventually.
>>340699362
It's an MMO, of course it's going to look worse than a single player game. Hitboxes are larger to account for network latency as well.

I really want ESO's "enforcer" system to go live. In that way, you kind of volunteer for world PVP by breaking the law. You get a high bounty for murdering and stealing (and getting caught) and then other players can kill you.
They advertised it as part of their crime and justice system but they haven't implemented it yet, and I hear it's been indefinitely delayed unfortunately.

>>340711298

>>340711624
Well the zones aren't that small, I mean you can still ride around on yourGuarand take in the scenery.
Cyrodiil is particularly large, it's about half of the Oblivion map (missing from Bravil south in the Nibenay region and from Skingrad west in the Gold Coast region, though Dark Brotherhood adds Anvil and Kvatch as PVE areas), as a PVP zone
>>340712761
So Cyrodiil is PvP zone?
>>340713223
Yes, a massive 3 faction PVP zone, with castles to siege (and siege weapons to bombard castles with), towns with PVE quests in them (to set up somewhat open world ganking), caves/delves with skyshards and PVE bosses, and then there's Imperial City where you farm a currency called Tel Var stones by killing PVE enemies in the city, but if another player kills you, they loot your Tel Var stones.Sweet girl...

It's a good idea, a great concept, it was one of the few Mmo games I've actually enjoyed playing, but it's horribly crippled by this Korean bullshit they're so fond of. Worst part is that at times you can see how lovingly crafted the game is, when you have one of the troops from Hieroneiden say "I'll spike your head upon my gate and ring your intestines across my mantle" during an attack - a direct reference to Gerald's quote from KUF. It was supposed to be a love letter to fans of the previous games, but everything turned out as it usually does. Still, one has to admire their tenacity. Seven years in development hell and they still pulled through.

I just started playing private vanilla WoW on Kronos II, large population, good conversation in world/general, not watered down sewage like retail, pretty comfy generally. Would recommend to anyone looking for an MMO experience with actual substance
My only gripe would be the server is in some part of Europe that gives me >300ms ping, but oh well, can't win them all

Has everyone just stopped making MMOs?
>>340688356
Damn son I was thinking the same thing. The game was so hyped
Sell me on your dream MMO. Let's see what you got.
>>340717354
To an extent, yeah.
MMOs are incredibly expensive to make and as multiple failed MMOs have shown in the past there just isn't a market for them anymore aside from F2P, and even then you're unlikely to see much of a consistent playerbase or profit.
Maybe eventually we'll see a proper great MMO come about again, but for now I think most big developers are focused on making stuff like MOBAs and class/hero shooters like Overwatch where they would have been doing MMOs in years past. Most of those will fail too though. It's just a cycle.
>>340715168
It's pretty populated on PS4
>>340717354
There's only a few indie games in the works, the bigger budget MMO's are done.. with BDO and Blade and Soul being the most recent it's a sinking market, and those MMO's only got released because they'd been in development for years prior. AAA's aren't going to want to touch the genre for the near future. The market is saturated and the playerbase for the genre is in decline.
From 2007-2014 was the big wave, all wanting some of that WoW success, Games like ESO and SWTOR and GW2 STARTED being developed back then, but didn't launch until the market was turning to shit.
>>340717830
I'd love something that's a bit of a bridge between the systems in place in EVE (in terms of how open and sort of free it is rather than just being "Do X Y and Z quests to progress") and then more of a traditional MMO like WoW or any of the others.
There's still deep lore and shit like that if you want it along with traditional quests, but also players themselves can make their own quests that serve their interests ranging from gathering crafting materials to "sneak into the enemy player city and bring back this info" or even doing bounties/assassinations.
If you want you can just live life on the server as a blacksmith or any of the other sorts of professions on offer and help more traditional adventurers along the way. PVP involves player made factions that can take control of cities and towns and whole territories if they have enough strength to hold it all.
Basically the sort of game all the "trapped in an MMO" anime have before everything goes to shit.
>>340696286

>>340707804
This.
For all of the people who say that devs are ruining MMOs and that we need another SWG, they always forget that true sandboxes died for a reason (WoW being just one of them).
You can't have a big budget sandbox game in this day and age due to different sensibilities.
>>340707320
Combat looks less responsive and worse than BDO, actually.
>>340719053
You've clearly never played a sandbox before. They don't require as much money as a theme park because the players are making their own content. Sandboxes aren't made anymore because WoW set so many things as the "norm" that the industry and people refuse to play without.
>>340719213
Nice attempted strawman, but I'm simply saying that you won't be seeing AAA sandbox games in this day and age because the subgenre isn't profitable, especially when the MMO genre is in rapid decline.
All MMOS are pretty shit, the best ones are GW2 and Wildstar, and please, stop shilling eso, it's incredibly bad in terms of graphics and the fucking combat system.

>>340707401
They do but if you can handle the grind, it's a very engaging game. DPS and tank rolls both were really fun. Even the 'fuck you go farm pvp points' modes are pretty alright. Incredibly grindy game though, it really can't be understated.
>try leveling up gear around level 50

I liked TERA but after several hundred hours of just farming pvp points and the same dungeon for gold/mats, I just woke up one day not in the mood to play and never turned back. I recommend leveling to 60. You're not missing anything in the post game and the combat is really good for an MMO.
>>340698267

>>340717354
We should petition Vanillaware to make a MMO
>>340717830
Magical girl MMO.
Look, everyone likes to pretend to be a girl online anyway. Might as well give them an excuse.
Character creation is like one of those super hero MMOs where you can pick and choose from a wide selection of powers, abilities and weapons.
All costumes are cosmetic only, so you can choose whatever is the cutest/prettiest/lewdest
Large emphasis on multiplayer, since magical girls are mostly teams now days.
After the RIP of Lineage 2 years ago, no MMO will compare. /thread
>>340720309
This. I found the combat and levelin TERA to be enjoyable. THe story and lore is decent if you take time to read the quests and whatnot.
But the endgame is horrible since re-rolling stats on your gear is very bad RNG and takes an iunsane amount of grind.
If it was guaraenteed then I'd be ok with it but RNG will fuck you over too much.
Also with the brawler patch they fucked up tanks and aggro. So tanking became easy and no longer fun.

All I got from it is that the world is sleeping giants and the robots are their nightmares of war or something.
They never explain what you're fighting half the time and the idea that the robot like Baraka are related to the Giants seems like a mistranslation.
What classifies an MMO as a "themepark" MMO?
I've never played an MMO because I assume it will have all this and I hate all of it:
>3rd person camera
>camera floats 20 meters above character
>name floating above every character
>shitty costume armour that makes no sense
>bikini armour sluts that make no sense
>all of them are actually men
>choose your sex
>men and women function exactly the same
>choose your race
>human, elf, dark elf, dwarf, orc
>choose a class
>probably tank/DPS/healer
>If not, then choose from one of 120 classes
>thief, burglar, rogue, brigand, scout, hunter, ranger, tracker, knight, paladin, crusader, cataphract, templar, cavalier, plate-wearer, champion, equites, rodelero, wizard, mage, sorcerer, conjurer, warlock
>every attack has red swoosh lines following it
>HyaH! HAYH! HEEEYAAAH! combo with dumb sword moves
>at least 3-4 menus for inventory and crafting
>>340704565
Playd some of closed beta. It's just another WoW clone witha bit of aion combo skills. Bad crafting.
The whole mount pokemon thing is bad. You are given quests to get new mounts as you go along. So your flying mount is limited to how high you can do. You never get to use a mount you want cause higher level mounts go faster/fly higher.
Generic questing, very poor optimization, generic talents, dungeons are small, linear and never worth doing while leveling. Mounted combat is buggy and very weak.
Neat idea, lacks polish. Ignore it.
>>340721387
When the game is designed as a single player game that takes from quest hub to quest hub, where player interaction is mainly through rare elite mob quests, the local dungeon or a raid.
The hub hopping and quest delivery makes the game sort of like wandering around a theme park.
Sandbox games tend to instead just throw you into the world and let the community effect what you do.

>A shooter fine sure, but the ability to see your character and around him is vital for anything with decent mechanics.
If the game is based around party combat then it would add the mechanic of using formation to protect yourself from being attacked from the side.
Besides that, even in 1st person hand-to-hand combat you just have to maintain situation awareness by not getting tunnel vision. I do that in Mount&Blade and in Skyrim.

All I ever wanted was a Phantasy Star Online sequel that had Portable 2's gameplay but improved, better graphics, better customization, Online/Universe's lobby, more weapons, more classes, more races, better instanced maps, and a good story.
I didn't mind PSO2's gameplay in the beginning, but it just feels off to me for some reason. The graphics aren't too bad, but I would like more colour variation per area. The lobby just seems small to me. I prefer the old games' weapon system (also, the "New Type" weapon system bothers the SHIT out of me). Classes were barebones at first, but at least they added ONE race in the THREE expansions. The maps bore the shit out of me, but at least they are more varied than the old games. The story is good, but Episode 4 and the anime jumped the shark for me, I have no idea what the fuck Sega was smoking, but I never want to touch that shit.
>>340721894
Is this the one where the devs made an event where you had to kill an evil crystal, except a group of players decided to kill themselves on it to level it up?
And then the developers stepped in with top level characters to kill the players and break the crystal hemselves, along with the two highest level players in the server.
Except one of them was a traitor and killed the developers
And the devs worked it into the game's story?

>throw you into the world and let the community effect what you do
Oh stop romanticizing it.
The reality is it's an excuse for devs to not make content, and most of the player interactions are just ganking.
Really an MMO should have aspects of both systems, having developer made quests, or better yet, GW2's events system, and then player created things like player stores, housing, towns, an in game bounty system where players can place bounties on other people, a deep crafting system that not everyone will be able to do while still being an adventurer (making dedicated crafting characters a valuable thing), and some story driven main quest or story driven instances like SWTOR's flashpoints that make your group feel like part of an epic story.

>I know they have a loyal playerbase that likes the EP4 crap

>>340723149
Honestly, I think SAO is shit, but having played the SAO Re:Hollow Fragment (which plays like a hybrid between old school MMOs and action games), I would at least try a SAO MMORPG with Hollow Fragment gameplay. I think the only problem I have with Hollow Fragment is that it doesn't "feel" like how SAO is supposed to be.
Sword Art Online is supposedly difficult and there was supposed to be tension, because one wrong move could get you killed. Most healing was heal over time, so if you were in a fight and needed to heal, you needed someone to cover your ass. Crystals were the only way any character could insta-heal or get out of a situation, but they were rare/expensive so they were last resort. HF ruined this by having all healing items be insta-heal and heal over time. If there are any revival items in HF, I never noticed them.
Also, add in long range weapons. When I read in the books that there weren't any long range weapons in SAO other than thrown objects, I died on the inside from how stupid this sounded.
If they added in magic into the game, like in ALO where the characters would have to recite spells, I would make it so that they would have to input specific button combinations in order to cast spells. If they screw up, then the spell would be a dud (kind of like the ninja class and mudras in FFXIV).>mfw I read volumes 1-8 in the vain hope that the books were less shitty than the anime
I don't know if I'm seeing it right, or if this thread is filled with RIFT shills, but when I played Rift a couple of months ago it was completely fucking dead. Ran through the beginning region, the one after leaving the tutorial area, completely fucking alone. Literally closed down every rift in the area ALONE.
Maybe I'm playing on the wrong server which is dead and everyone is piling up on one server similar to what happened to Wildstar, because its a dead game. I just chose the server they "recommended".
>>340724313
It's not even that. It's the people. The majority of people playing MMOs nowadays are just shitty human beings. They ruin everything for themselves by studying up on games like it's fucking homework and then they ruin everyone elses fun they're around by harping on them constantly until they too have spoiled everything about the game for themselves. Also, the general attitude of the average MMO gamer is a lot different now than it was ten years ago. Hell, even five years ago. I'm just so sick of getting into groups with a bunch of limpdick shit eating welfare recipients.

Melee combat was better (MY OPINION) in PSU. You had the just frame system PSO2 has but you had to watch animation frames rather htn a timing circle.
Phonton arts were lveled, very grindy but they also had a combo system. You'd do 1-2-3 normal hits then 1-2-3 of the photon art combo. You had to get the art to level 11/21 to unlock the 2nd and 3rd parts of the combo but they were alot of fun.
PSO2 lets you use photon arts at any point but you only have small moves instead of a long combo. Granted pso2 finnaly gave ranged some photon arts and fixed techs but ya, melee was better in psu.
Also doubler saber design is ass in pso2.

She knows thatI'm a mid-20s KVand while I've told her thatI'm invisible to females, she has also stated that she was invisible during her younger years despite having I don't know how many "boyfriends" in HSher father sent her a fucking box of 'love letters' she had saved from HS not even making this upand she had a six-year-long 'college sweetheart' relationship.
Don't get me wrong. Not trying to find any excuse not to take advice or be like the kind of person to disregard any form of advice given but I'm trying to explain my reasoning here.
Just play Old School Runescape, the last non-casual MMO there is.

I think BDO strikes a good balance.
Because if you go the other route like in SWG then you have retarded shit where crafters hoard all the power and the entire meta-game was an eternal conspiracy/gank between them.

As an Asuna fan I can't into Progressive. Feels too much like Kirito is cheating on the perfect girl.
Are there any MMOs that let you play support classes?
I'm not talking healers. I went from FFXI to WoW, and one thing I always missed was being able to play those debuff/buff classes like Bard

LotR:O has Bards, or something like it. You can music enemies to death.
I want a sequel to Atlantica Online run by a less greedy company.

>>340727064
The pacing isn't the problem, it's the fact that the story supposedly takes place in a game yet the writer clearly has no idea about basic game design or "gamer psychology" or however you want to phrase it. Most of the characters act like it's their first time playing a game (justified with Asuna) and from the way the "game" is described and how events play out, it seems less like a game and more like an alternate reality.
>>340727326
>Asuna

That's a weird way to spell Suguha. Either way, all the characters are shit (except for Yuuki/Zekken/Absolute Blade).
Why aren't there more sex based MMOs? God knows MMO players are a bunch of horny bastards who love ERP and sex appeal is the only reason people played Scarlet Blade and most Asian MMOs.

BDO PVE is aoe grinding. Boss fight is avoiding the one shot attacks, or better - simply rolling a ranged character.
BDO PVP is random locks due to unanimated CCing, teleporting people, unsynced damages and animations, and terrible balance overall.
So that's a good balance for you I guess.
>>340728261
But we're talking sandbox vs themepark design, not combat mechanics.
>>340724778
You should read the thread instead of just counting the number of time Rift is mentioned.
Everyone's saying they gimped the leveling by increasing the exp way too much for a lot of functions like adventuring, meaning you just storm to 50+ so there is no body in the starting regions. You can also tell the same about WoW.

A good balance of themepark vs sandbox?
As said, nothing you can makes an impact in the world. You can see some people's farmplots and guildies workers, that's about it as the "sandbox" part. Or do you include being able to have a ship/caravan/horse in the open a part of the game being sandbox?
People still afk autorun to level their stats in cities because they are PVP-protected there, and nobody does PKing anyway because how heavily penalized it is.
The questing is also linear as fuck. The only part where it stop being linear is the new areas because you are already 50+ at that point. And then questing only gives contribution points, no character evolution.
Not really sure what you find good in it
>>340727435
Pretty much the only classes I play too man.
Fuck tanks, fuck healsluts, fuck DPS. A support class where you can mass debuff a horde of enemies, have a fuckload of buffs and ability boosters up your arsenal, crowd control, cripple bosses by cursing them, and having the ability to remove debuffs/drainers on the whim is where it's at.
There's a reason why they aren't placed in most MMOs. They are too OP. You put a class that can weaken enemies and control the flow of combat and you're basically risking the chance of your content be shitted on.
>>340728870
You can affect the world economy depending on what you trade and sell. You can affect local taxes and productivity by capturing nodes with your guild. You can invest in banks which requires competing with others to be the richest. You can PK anywhere but certain protected zones to control leveling and resource zones. You can play through most of the game focusing on life and economical skills, not combat.
etc. etc.
It's a lot more sandbox than 99% of MMOs out there today.
If you're looking for UO or some shit like that, then you should probably shut up and stop whining since that's not going to happen.
>>340727673

Thats not a sandbox at all. Simply think of the term "sandbox". What can you do in a sandbox? Oh i remember when as a kid me and my friends used to build shit and sell to each other That never actually happened . Now think of a sandbox game. What can you do in one of them? Now make it one big ass server and add RPG elemnts. That my friend is real sandbox MMORPG.
Camelot Unchained is the only MMO worth waiting for, I feel sorry for people playing today's MMORPG.
Shards Online might also be good but pre-alpha looks horrible
now that this thread is nearly dead I will recommend lotro. It has the best community, world, and is the best traditional mmo on the market now that WoW is basically a queue simulator with moba levels of abilities that could be played on a controller.
I don't want too many of you guys to join though since the community is actually so based that if you act up in /world chat you'll get report swarmed so fast that you'll be banned within 5 minutes. The GM's are always watching like hawks and delight in slapping down upstarts.
>>340732421i'll download it just to start spamming "hitler did nothing wrong"
>>340687690
No, the genre died when F2P became the standard, as they don't have to really make an effort and can just cash in on the addicted for some months.
>>340729934
The prices on the market don't depend on player actions.
Selling don't make the prices go up and buying don't make the prices go down.
There is no Node wars yet so there is absolutely no control of territory (including world pvp).
Banks require no direct interaction with other player. Town-run investment banks require absolutely nothing.
City interior point based investment banks require spamming decorations (P2W as those one gives you tons of interior points and for "free").
Pking everywhere is a sandbox element? Ah.
You can also play through most of the game focusing on life skills in WoW.
You will be capped at what you do with life skills unless you grind quests which are mainly combat/level based.
This still forces you to combat.
Looks like you didn't play the game very much

Couldn't agree more, nobody is there to enjoy themselves, everyone's playing out of some sick obligation to keep improving their character. And if you haven't finished content before, forget about finding a group to run it. MMO players are great at spoiling any possible enjoyment in MMOs.
I resubbed to wow this month for a comfy game to play in exams month, but now i'm bored because there's anything relevant to do since Legion will come down.
I can't even do in time the legendary mission because of the timegates, and the professions are like a mobile game now.
At least next month once I finish exams I can play FFXIV and continue the ARR patch missions, I hope the endgame is better than WoW, or at least not full timegated even in professions.

I argue everquest, my favorite part of the game just to level 70, so its almost entirely free to play, and with mercenaries, you don't have to rely on retards to do content.
if you really like the game, the balance in the game gets better the higher level you go, and it is fun learning how to play your class well, because just reading what abilities of your own stack with each other puts you into the top 100 players in the game (the average player is just that fucking bad)

I still play LOTRO once in a while. It had a good story, you know who the heroes of the overarching plot is, but it doesn't make your role any less significant. Unfortunately it all kind of went down hill after Rohan; the landscape looked nice, but everything else including the writing got stale.

Sorcerers in ESO get three diffrent minions. (Two of which are toggle minion. You can just keep them out permanently.)
The imp is what you start out with. It's pretty weak, but it drawn agro away from you. You can morph it into a clannfear that does way more.
Later on, you'll get the winged twilight, and it's awesome. You can morph it to heal you or restore your mana. Both are really good options.
You then unlock an ultimate skill that summons a giant storm atronach for a short time. It wrecks shit.
Mabinogi was and still is one of the best MMOs out there, a shame it's so fucking lacking in new blood or blood in general.
If they would've just managed to not do the whole subscription bullshit on launch, it would've no doubt been huge in the west still to this day.
I'm thinking of resubbing to ff14 but the game is shit if you are not a hardcore raider or a casual erpfag.
>>340750909
There's three ways to play a really awesome sorcerer. I main the class and STILL haven't chosen what's more fun.
>Minion Master
Both skill bars have both minion summons on them. It allows for you to swap weapons without dispelling your summons.
You're basiclly the DPS for your healer and tank. The badass Clannfear is your tank, and the twilight keeps both of you healed.
If shit hits the fan, you bring out the storm atronach.
>Storm Caller
Ever wanted to use force lighting? Ever wanted to kill world bosses in seconds? Make a storm calling build.
You'll mostly just blast everything with a shit load of AoE. It's best to have the Vampire skill line for the self healing it gives you.
>Storm Tank
Ever wanted to be a stamina based mage that tanks hits while forming lighting all around your body? This is awesome.
Grab a shield, a one handed weapon of your choice, pop lightning form, and pull all the aggro you can.
Enjoy.
>bought BDO

I am okay with cosmetics in a cash shop, but putting ALL the cosmetics there? Guess I will have to go back to GW 2 for my catwalk, at least you could grind for stuff there.I mean the Kibelius armor makes my dick hard and all but 30 bucks?
Unless you're into weeb shit or korean grinders as an excuse to jack off while playing video games, the only acceptable mmos are:
>Ultima Online
(perferably private shards tho retail is acceptable, broadsword has brought a lot of neat shit in)
>SWGemu
(at least two of the shards are acceptable)
>WoW
(faggots)
>Guild Wars
(is dead but GW2 is an abomination and you should feel bad if you mentioned it)
>Haven & Hearth2
(had a shitty payment model at launch, is now fair and you can likely play for free since all all of you are shitters)
>Warhammer [age of reckoning] emu
Getting better all of the time, the pvp is lightyears ahead still of most modern garbage, needs more population
>EQ project 1999

FFXIV used to be worth it, but they turned into a themepark with nothing worthwhile to do and the story is shit to begin with. panders to casuals and theres little to no worthwhile content because they are obsessed with nerfing the shit out of everything even remotely challenging. Stopped playing it maybe 6months ago and sure enough, they havent added anything worthwhile in the past 6 months.
