If you've been gone since 3.0, there's a good deal of content. Some of it's pretty good, too. MSQ has some neat bits, and the newest 24-man is one of the best they've made.
Midas is a huge step up from Gordias, too.

I resubbed after taking an 8-month break (between August and late May or so) and have enjoyed the content there is. I mean, 30 days is only about 13$, so it's not a huge investment.
I'd try finding an FC, though. Even the illusion of social presence can really help. You might even find one that isn't full of idiots or ERP cats.
I might not renew my sub anytime soon until 4.0 is announced. Dunno. I've gotten some worth out of it thus far though. Depends on if I find people to play with.

I feel like it's really hard to enjoy a FF14 from a social aspect. If you aren't playing the game right from release and playing a hardcore mmo like this with the intention of doing hardcore content, you're going to have a very difficult time. Most people form their cliques and whatnot which eventually turn into their statics and their FCs. In that little group, there is enough idiosyncratic charisma to block everyone else out so it doesn't cheapen their own relationships with one another. If you came into ff14 with Heavensward, it's only downhill from there.
And frankly, one of the very few things this game has going for it is the social aspect. Very few hardcore FCs are on the race to complete every raid in record time. Most are willing to take a backseat and just leisurely do it. The content is too hard for some and too easy for most. There's a difficult balance to strike. On top of that, aesthetics is one of the biggest draws for this game. Who's going to give you compliments on your cat girl if not your friends online?
So in conclusion, don't resub to ff14. If you haven't made friends at this point in the game's life span, you won't ever. And even if you do, it'll be as shallow as a puddle. Find another mmo that recently came out or wait for a new one. You won't find your friends here.

Think about the kind of people that would play FF14 and those are people who self-insert. FF14 has heavy heavy emphasis on physical appearences. I would say most care for horizontal progression over vertical progression.
So it's for people who never looked to good or were outcasts to some degree. Or at the very least, were not essential in their social surroundings. They never felt the warmth of a static group dynamic in reality so here they will do so. "Oh we have John "ubrmage" who's the joker of our crew and sarah "kawaiicat" who's the promiscuous moe type!". Don't feel bad for them or pity them or be angry with them. You and I are the same way. We were just late to the party.

Like i've never been surrounded by so many distateful personalities in my entire life, yes i'm not in a position to judge others but i dont go out of my way to be rude as i've seen most people act towards each other in this game.
I stopped playing this game because I could not make any friends there.
Nearly everything can be done through the Dungeon Finder so there's never any reason to play with other players. And if you would find some cool players in the DF you can't even add them as friends as they're most likely playing on another server.But I bet the game would be a lot of fun if you actually had some friends in it
