Why do people feel the need to "grow out" of video games? You only have to go to /pol/ or /fit/ to find out why Video Games are absolutely degenerate and detrimental to your health, but why? People who perpetuate this narrative do so from an angle that says they are now liberated from video games and their lives are much better off without them but I just can't make sense of that.
I'm talking about more than just /pol/ mind you. Even a few if my friends have announced one more than one occasion "I don't play games anymore" like you either do or you don't. Sure I play less then I did when I was a kid but I can't see it having any toxic effect on my life whatsoever. I just go to work, pay bills, see my friends and play vidya when I'm bored or its fun.
Obviously some peoole simply don't want to play Vidya and I get that but I'm talking about a seeming movement against video games, my friends won't even take a turn at Fifa at a party or something always quoting "Nah I don't play games" when these same dudes were just six months ago flogging Bloodborne with me on a daily basis.
What is driving this opposition to vidya? Why is there now a belief that to become an adult or to be taken seriously they must be done away with?

I'm 24 and I've quite literally given up on the game industry.

Maybe its because I don't remember much from my childhood, but I think things are fine now. Maybe not as magical as they were when I've first started experiencing them, but I still find a gem every now and then. I like to keep an open mind on these things though.
Social stigma
Video games are still the nerdy or the basement dweller thing to do in the eyes of most people. As much as the market has spread it's going to be seen as a waste of time to delve into games as it was thought with comic books, rock music, television, probably radio and various other things before them. Not that vidya is anywhere nearly as socially impactful as any of those things, but regardless. It will pass in time as everything else did.

Fucking hell, I don't know how I ended up with such beta associates in Uni.
I don't play as much as I used to. Mostly because I started lurking /g/ and now Linux is primarly my main hobby followed by listening to music and then vidya. At least with the first two, there is always new things to discover and their is some depth and meaning behind them for a proper adult discussion. Video Games these days are extremely shallow. Nothing has changed since 2006 in terms of what games can offer. VR is still in its infant stage so it has no significant effects on gaming these days. I still enjoy playing older games but I haven't bought a new game in years.

one of my friends who plays weekly pen and paper with my group said this the second time to me in my life. first time was probably 2 years ago, last time just one or two weeks.

I know of at least 3 ways to go about it.
The way I used to do it. Being generally unhappy about being surrounded by strangers in a dark and loud environment filled with distracting lights.
The normalfag kind of way where you actually enjoy this kind experience while getting stupor drunk with tons of alcohol while hitting on women.
And the way I recently started to do it as a place where I can train my social skills without repercussions, being able to get away with saying almost any shit, seeing how people react and calibrating my social queues to said reactions.
Both #2 and #3 can be pretty fun in their own way or as a combination of each other. I really wouldn't recommend #1

I hate video games. I think they’re abominations. They don’t mean what they used to mean. They were originally in the hands of developers who would actively expand the imagination of their nine- to 13-year-old audience. That was completely what they were meant to do and they were doing it excellently.
These days, the industry thinks the audience is certainly not nine to 13, it’s nothing to do with them. It’s an audience largely of 20-, 30-, 40-year old men, usually men. Someone came up with the term "Gamers". These Gamers latched on to it; they were simply interested in a way that could validate their continued love of Zelda or Mario without appearing in some way emotionally subnormal.
This is a significant rump of the videogame-addicted, mainstream-addicted audience. I don’t think the industry stands for anything good. I think it’s a rather alarming sign if we’ve got audiences of adults paying to play Star Fox Zero or Kirby, and delighting in concepts and characters meant to entertain the 12-year-old boys of the 1980s and 1990's.

That's usually what it boils down to. I would say a minority of parents genuinely had kids for the purpose of making a wholesome family to care for. Video games are a fad.
An overwhelming majority of people playing video games don't genuinely enjoy the hobby. They do it because it's an extremely accessible activity that you can you do either alone or socially to pass the time. It's the same thing with television and movies. It gives you something to talk to people about, it helps create social bonds and lets you be part of a group.
Eventually, they get older and they have other things that take their time away, other things that they can relate to others with. A job, a spouse, kids, etc. They no longer have a need for something that's made to waste time. They can talk about their work or kids with their friends. Video games are no longer necessary to them.
The people who still play video games past 18-24 are people who've been playing because they actually like it. It's the same with any other hobby, and why you see the 30+ community filled with people who like building model airplanes or have train collections and so on. If you're doing something past 30, it's because you genuinely enjoy it. If you "grow" out of something by 30, it's because you never actually liked it.
People who grow out of video games are admitting to themselves and the people around them that they needed a crutch to get through their social life early on.

I got bored with everything else in my life and thought it would be fun.
It actually ended up being fun. When you start out learning any new skill it's tedious, it's arduous, but once you actually start to get some successes it snowballs from there.
At the end of the day those 3 months helped me grow more as a person than the 5 years of playing video games while I was in deep depression.
Now I don't go out every day anymore like I did during those 3 months, but it gives me a rock solid sense of confidence in social situations as well as around women knowing where I came from and what I accomplished and what I could go back to should the need ever arise.
I actually learned to let go during that time and because of that started to become a lot closer to what I feel is really who I am.

Well, the best works in the rest of the mediums all teach you something, as I said. They exalt you, or in some cases destroy you, so you can rebuild yourself. The "canon" of art around the world is not guaranteed to be life changing, but it should improve you as a human being, since all good art conveys knowledge, and knowledge is "good".
If consumed correctly, you can glean something from all the world's masterpieces. And thus, hopefully having learned something, you become a "better person".

Absolutely. The late 90's and early 2000's were the golden age of video games. Tons of good PC games like DOOM, Battlezone, Age of Empires II, Starcraft, Dungeon Keeper, Heroes of Might and Magic, Baldur's Gate, early Elder Scrolls games, RCT, Descent and Forsaken etc.
At that period, there were a lot of good console games too. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Oddworld, Halo, Resident Evil series. There are hundreds more, of course.
Games today are bottom of the barrel trash like Uncharted 4, and then there's some fun indie games too. There are far fewer genres alive today than there was in the late 90's and early millennial years, and I think it's really hurting the industry as a whole.

I used to play a mod for a popular FPS game in the early 2000s. I was around 18 at the time and there was a guy who played in our fairly tight knit community.
That man was in his 60s at the time and no one gave two shits. He was also really good. Video games are a hobby and age is not a restriction when it comes to hobbies.
