The fighting mechanics were cool.
Beat it for the first time yesterday. Definitely not fun enough to warrant the multiple play throughs for the other endings, but it was good for an afternoon romp.

The game tries too hard to force an emotional impact, to the point that it was hard to take the "sad" parts seriously.
It tries too hard to have a constant stream of quotable jokes, to the extent that I stopped liking even the few characters I started out liking.
It tries too hard to break the mold and hammer home its message, to the extent that it became annoying to listen to.
It had a near battle system that it took until almost the end of the game to even do anything interesting with. Most of the last few fights were solid, but everything up to that point was Spare-spam 2016.
The game tried too hard, and as a result, it turned a game that would have been decent into something that's just not very fun. Add in the tumblrina fanbase, and you've got a game I don't even want to think about anymore

I think it's an above average game, though how much I enjoy the music for a game factors in a lot for me. I agree with what an earlier anon said about the combat system not having full advantage taken of it, it's too bad because Mettaton, Asgore, genocide Undyne and Sans were all fun. I don't know how bad the fanbase is because I've never been in a good-willed Undertale thread, or to a forum for it, or anything like that. Because the game is so harmless and fun, I imagine it's the fanbase that makes a lot of people consider it such cancer. It was good but the biggest problem for me was that it wasn't enough of an actual game.
Sure, the puzzles and the characters and the story and all the goofy shit and the things that made it stand out from other games like the potential for killing Toriel on accident, etc...those things did make the game fun.
However, the actual game had little substance or challenge except for 2 particular boss fights...in a route where the game punishes you for going down that route by making it EXTREMELY tedious to keep going, which I thought was fucking stupid regardless of the "point" it was trying to make.
So it was enjoyable and worth playing, but it wasn't amazing or even very good either.

The gameplay is literally a gimmick that is slave to the narrative. The game revolves around it's narrative and text dumping completely, the gameplay offers absolutely zero depth outside of the use to choose which ending you want. It's boring, uninspired, hipster garbage that panders to the emotions above all. I don't even understand how it does that either because I dropped it after the spider bitch, it was a chore to play and it wasn't good. The pattern you see with Kickstarter is "I worked on this so i can make a new one" or "I liked this so we're gonna make a new one".
Undertale was exactly that but "I liked Homestuck and Tumblr so im gonna make a game around it".
It was asking for the Tumblr audience from the get go, it WAS Tobys audience considering his work on Homestuck.
