how can you tell a game is using Physically Based Rendering? i dont know the difference. i think old games like even l4d2 look pretty accurate in lighting and materials

physically based rendering is something like RGB and CMYK - just the same tool from the other persepective.

PBR easier to use to create accurate looking materials. thats it, nothing fancy

2 sliders against 3-4-5 or more, just unification

PBR is a great tool for developers, it's not a some unique gimmik that make your game looks awesome, it's all in the hands of devs.
PBR is unseparable with 3d sculpting and allegorithmic textures, look at this shit:

Basically, instead of using high res photos, and making high poly from scratch to build a good looking normal map, they just imitate the physics process of the surface using pbr, creating good looking textures. It's much more easier than using old technics.

Look at the light reflections around the bolt and the reflection on the lens, the lighting on the left gun is much more basic than the one on the right. PBR allows light to realistically bounce back off an object instead of appearing to go through it.
