It helps if you've seen other mech anime and maybe played late 90s JRPGs since it pays a lot of homage to them. The early episodes are a kind of weak but it gets better when more characters are introduced (it's a large cast and they don't have a lot of personality by themselves)

Undertale wasn't hated because it got popular, it was hated because the fanbase consists of autistic tumblrtards. Combine that with a whole "Undertale is the best game ever!11!!1!" and there being at least 2 or so Undertale threads up at once after a week, and people just got sick of it.
The game is fine, the writing is decent, albeit it's too easy and there's really not that much content when you really look at it (the reason people play it for so long is because they kill an enemy or something during their initial playthrough, so they have to do everything all over again, and if they're doing a Genocide run, grinding).
It was nothing to do with "/v/ is hating on popular shit", it was "a large portion of /v/ got sick of the constant UT threads and shit fanbase". If the fanbase wasn't complete shit, and there weren't multiple, constant threads, then it'd be fine.And before you say "b-but the fanbase is good!", the general is fucking shit, and when they were booted out of /v/, it turned into goat shota porn nearly instantly. At least other generals try to discuss the game, and don't devolve into shit-tier fetishes.
