Never played a SMT other than Persona
I've got a hacked 3DS here, should I try SMTIV/Devil survivor stuff or emulate older games?

You should do both, play new and old games.

SMT IV is a decent place to start, and is a lot more forgiving than other Megaten games. If you wanna try something harder, go with Nocturne for the PS2.

If you want an experience that is more story driven and focuses on keeping the same human party as opposed to fusing demons, then the Digital Devil Saga games are for you.
