How did a low/mid-budget PSP game developed by a B-team with a script by some random novelist ended up being a better sequel to MGS3 than the official Kojima-directed sequels that were supposed to be Peace Walker and The Phantom Pain?

the only thing I remember doing in that game is luring soldiers into rooms with mines by knocking on the wall. They would search every room but I would be hidden in the pipeline that connects all the rooms of the building and I will fire at the feet so the tension is always there.

It was fun.

Sort-of. He never really contradicted, but there's a line in PW where they dismissed the events of MPO and they never bring anything up from that game again. Pic related.

It's been omitted in every Metal Gear timeline published since then.
>>
>>340656079

Stop fucking take a tongue in cheek line seriously.

Kojimas himself already said that MPO overaching story is canon, but the details aren't, that way he can freely modify them if he wants to.

But it isn't. Portable Ops manages to be even more redundant than those two. The only thing it has going for it is actual boss fights and more varied playable characters. Nearly everything else is a mess.

Gene was a pretty shit antagonist.

>Stop fucking take a tongue in cheek line seriously.
It might be tongue-in-cheek, but it's also a betrayal of Kojima's true feelings on how he regards MPO. Fact is, Kojima never cared that much for the Metal Gear games that weren't his own. Otherwise, he would've done Metal Gear 3: The Sequel to Snake's Revenge back in 1990 instead of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

>Kojimas himself already said that MPO overaching story is canon, but the details aren't, that way he can freely modify them if he wants to.
Which is why Snake talks about RAXA and the ICBMG to Huey in Peace Walker and why Python and Null showed up in MGSV. Oh wait...

It provided the origin story of FOXHOUND, an organization that was already established in the Metal Gear lore, instead of simply throwing in a new mercenary unit (MSF and DD) out of the blue.

It's not head canon. Kojima has outright said he considers only the Metal Gear games he wrote to be part of the "Metal Gear Saga." He even says Metal Gear Rising is a "parallel continuation" to MGS4 and not what he would consider his true sequel to that game.

So did MGS3. Or, at least, MGS3 gave us more than enough. We didn't need a game over it.
>Better than Antonym Man and Mr. Skull head
Only on account of being a blatant retread of two superior protagonists: Liquid and Big Boss himself.

PO repurposes MGS1's set-up to tell a story about Proto-Big Boss's Proto-Outer Heaven. The entire thing was pretty uninspired and lazy.

I stopped playing Portable Ops because I couldn't be bothered going back to the truck.

I played PW to the final stretch when the game stopped me from progressing because I didn't grind weapons that could kill the boss in time yet.

I consider both games to be addendums to overall demise of the series's narrative model.
>>
>>340655887
>Kojima removing anything from canon

That's rich considering he didn't write MGS 1, 2 or 3. Nor did he design most of the bosses in the first 4 games, if any.
>>
>>340657738

And why should I trust a random guy translation over the official one again?

Also ,ti's obvious that konami/kojima studios ignore portable ops and rising in ti's art and timelines. Konami owns the material/copyright of rising and PO, we don't know if they gave permission to use it.

>>
>>340657880
>So did MGS3. Or, at least, MGS3 gave us more than enough. We didn't need a game over it.
By that argument, you could say MGS3 itself was pointless and Big Boss was much better when he was mysterious.

What happened to tomokazu fukushima?
>>
>>340658732
>you could say MGS3 itself was pointless and Big Boss was much better when he was mysterious.
I could, and would. Big Boss wasn't especially "mysterious" prior to MGS3 anyway--he talks at length to Snake about his goals and motivations. MGS3's story also doesn't emphasize filling in gaps the way Portable Ops does.

But that isn't my point. My point is that MGS3's ending served as a nice setup of FOXHOUND's creation that felt a lot smoother than Portable Ops' elaboration.

Except every Metal Gear game from 2006 until 2015 were produced by Kojima Productions (prior to that, it was KCEJ since 1996). However, Kojima clearly makes a distinction between the Metal Gear he was directly involved with and those he merely give approval of.

There's a reason why PW and V both reference MGS3 a lot and each other, but MPO is conveniently swept aside.
>>

Because translation slipups can happen as much in official sources as it does unofficially. Especially when it's done on the spot.

Portable Ops' boss fights are pretty laughable, though. They're conceptually more interesting than the vehicles or Skulls, but in practice I'm not sure they are. They do manage to be less tedious, but they're definitely not good.

Portable Ops is proof that Metal Gear is going to be fine without Kojima.

Konami B-Team knows what players like about Metal Gear, without trying to over insert all of the artsy or message shit about it. At the end of the day, Konami is capable of making a cool, character based story about badasses, mercenaries, and corrupt shady organizations.

Kojima is just capable of making silly jokes and forced philosophical musings. Kojima is a fucking master with cameras/directing/cutscenes though, so you can be sure cutscenes wont be as well paced or as cool looking as they used to be.

Nah, Kojima said his own studio is only going to employ 100 people max and that he hasnt reached that yet and that they are still hiring. He also said near the end of MGS4 they had over 400 people on his team, and MGSV was almost double the size as that.

There are lots of left over people who worked on Portable Ops, Peace Walker, MGS4, and V still employed at Konami.

Konami will likely have them lead gameplay, buy a hit novelist to write the story, and then pay sega to let them use some of the cutscene directors from the Yakuza series to help with cutscene/cinematographic direction for the new Metal Gear.

The real question is when will it take place? The only two valid places in the timeline are between V and Metal Gear 1, or after MGS4. If they want to bring back Hayter, they will probably have Snake revived from the dead with cyborg tech to deal with some sort of sci-fi cyberpunk dystopia shit, maybe working alongside raiden again.

If they want to keep Sutherland, they will probably continue the Venom saga, but this time without Kojima's bullshit and Portable Ops level of personality and wacky anime bullshit.

Gameplay was okay. I liked the new struggle you did when you tried to grab an eny from the front. Pretty neat way to nerf just running at an enemy and grabbing them. And there was some space for personal flair, so you could grapple with them, then shoot them or knock them over or whatever after the struggle. Speaking of portable games, does anyone here like Gladiator Begins? I just started playing today, it seems pretty fun. I was trying to play pugilist at first, but it seems like it's really demanding of your stats. I switched to using a sword and a buckler and the game got way more reasonable since I already had a ton of stamina and strength from trying to make the fists work.

It didn't. How in the hell anyone can gild the memory of fucking Portable Ops of all things is beyond me.

Go back and replay it. It's hot garbage.

>Kojima is a fucking master with cameras/directing/cutscenes though

If you like whatever's popular at blockbusters at the time, then sure, his tendency to refrain to self aware corniness whenever his techniques get old is pretty annoying. I would say Kojima is really fantastic at raising hype with misdirections, though.

>actual MGS gameplay
>story grounded within the usual 5 feet of reality with Null outside that 5 feet
>recruits provide interesting mechanics in the field
>most intel gathering and finding where you go next is handled in the field since no support team

Compared to

>watered down simplified gameplay
>cheap Monster Hunter clone right down to actual Monster Hunter missions
>story is ridiculous with flying mechs and sentient AI in 1974
>recruits have almost nothing except for stats and the occasional % boost to actions
>simple and linear mission with no real interactivity with the environment to learn and progress
>still 20FPS despite being watered down

Why people love Peace Walker so much and dis Portable Ops is beyond me

See, your mistake is assuming Konami will actually go back to the video games business, when pachinko is working out so well for them.

At this point, I'd be surprised if they took the effort to hire Bluepoint to remaster the whole MGS saga and put it on current-gen consoles/PC.

This is it. You faggots and your contrarian bullshit has gone too far. No other community has worse taste than this place. Portable Ops is a TERRIBLE game, and the fact that you hipster retards are starting to champion it is all the proof needed that this place is overrun by tasteless children.
