Retail game and console sales have been shrinking, not growing, they were down 14% in 2015 from 2014. Console sales have been generally down every year since ~2010 as well, fewer consoles and console games are being sold when compared to the recent past. 8th gen console sales won't match the 200 million 6th gen moved and certainly won't be coming anywhere close to the 270+ million 7th gen consoles sold.
It's going to change because the industry and the markets are moving toward digital distribution over brick-and-mortar retail. It's more profitable as they can still charge $60+season pass+DLC and don't have to give anyone else a cut. The most profitable games are all on PC/mobile and feature heavy microtransactions of subscription fees, the traditional retail model is slowly being phased out.

All three consoles had moved most of their units by 2012, PS3 and 360 were each at at east 75 million and the Wii obviously lost steam by then almost entirely.
That's part of it though, 8th gen is not gong to last that long. Sony likely stuck it out with PS3 for so long because they lost a ton of money on it, they wanted to attempt to make that back. And the 360 wasn't profitable for MS until late in its life as well, especially after the RROD scandal.
Both MS and Sony are already allegedly trotting out newer versions of their consoles with better hardware, that's something we haven't really seen before. Couple that with the fact that retail game sales have been down every year for a while now with PC/mobile games being the most profitable games out there and I just don't think the environment is going to allow for these consoles to stick around for that long.

~33% boost in CPU performance
~100% boost in GPU performance
~25% boost in bandwidth

The upgrade will be best utilised to get 1080p60 for most if not all games.
4K is a pipedream on consoles at this point.

I actually think people are getting kind of complacent about graphics. Nobody was really that impressed by the PS4 like they were with the PS3.

But you could say the exact same about consoles these days, the "put the game in and play" convenience is all but gone on anything but a Nintendo platform and games today ship half-finished, require massive day-one patches and online DRM check-ins.
And it takes no more effort to connect a controller to your PC than a console after the initial setup, install the drivers once and you're done. Turn the controller on and play. I have a wireless adapter for my 360 pad and it took all of 2 minutes to install the driver and get it working. Now I just push the home button and it turns on and works, like I'm playing on a 360.

Consoles are just slowly losing the advantages they had over PCs. The "put it in and play" convenience is largely gone as I said with the advent of digital distribution, publishers can just shove the game out and patch it later. They're really not cheaper in the long run if you're buying new, full games at $60+season pass+DLC and paying for online functionality. Even more so if you factor in these new models.
The ease of use and convenience just isn't there in a big way anymore, consoles are watered-down PCs at this point with few of the advantages either platform typically offers. The flexibility PC offers isn't there, the convenience and value consoles used to offer aren't there anymore. PC requires more setup but I think its worth it, you can use any controller you want, spend as much or as little as you want and you have all the flexibility and other shit a PC offers. I spent $300 on my last PC and it plays games like DS3 and GTA5 comparably or better than consoles and it does everything else a PC does to boot.

Price drops help, aggressive price drops, like the $350 PS4 suddenly dropping to $100-150, generally don't help as much as you'd think as the maker earns a lot less on each sale. It's not that PCs are getting easier to use (I guess they are to an extent) it's that consoles are becoming more cumbersome and don't offer the same level of convenience or value they used to.
Those updates and patches used to be something you wouldn't have to deal with at all because the game would have shipped complete with it on the disc and wouldn't have needed patching in he first place. Consoles also mandate installs now, and games only let you play while updating if the dev decided to implement it and/or it's got an offline SP mode. And then you have games like Overwatch, Titanfall, etc. that are completely online-only, requiring you install, update and pay your $60/year sub fee before even being able to play at all. The "put the game in and play" convenience is gone, the value is gone since you're paying to access online features and games aren't "complete" anymore unless you buy all the DLC.
I don't consider myself particularly computer literate and I didn't have much trouble building my first PC, I really think its worth it. Doubly so when you consider the fact that you can count the number of worthwhile exclusives on both consoles on a single hand, so they don't even have that advantage anymore either. They're just playing the same games you could be playing on PC with much better visuals and performance, any pad you like and free online.

Well I disagree, it's not doing much better than it was before, PS4 is still outselling 2:1. the gap is only getting larger, not smaller, and the Xbone's highest sales numbers came at launch.

20 million shipped, again reports from Gamestop and EA are reporting 14-15 million sold through to customers. MS stopped giving out actual numbers some time ago so everything is estimates. It's not shabby but it's also not anywhere close to what MS expected and the Xbone won't come anywhere near the 360's sales numbers or market share.
You need to consider the scope of what MS had planned. The OG XB was there to test the waters, it wasn't terribly ambitious and pushed a lot of its own, exclusive software. Xbone was designed as a massive multi-media machine to rule your living room, MS made a huge push for it and likely spent a lot of money doing so. Remember their "1 billion Xbones sold" comment?
MS's IPs have all been underperforming relative to previous entries as well with Halo 5 being the biggest offender. The games aren't doing as well as they used to, the hardware is no where near where MS expected it to be sale-wise.

DS is, by far, the best-selling handheld and about tied with the PS2 for the best-selling platform ever. Kind of hard to match or top that.
GB sold something like 60-80 million not counting GBC oer a decade, GBA sold almost 80 million. Given the advent of mobile games 3DS did well, everyone said it would die immediately and it wouldn't sell at all and look at where it is now. 60 million in 5 years is good, again, given mobile has eaten into the market significantly and no one expected it to move that much to begin with.
