Let's hope it won't be a windows 10 exclusive
>>340634860
I thought it's getting a pc release as well.
Probably. It doesn't have anything going for it aside from the admittedly great art direction.

Fuck's sake. I can put those mechanics together in GameMaker in half a day.
This game is all grafics. Gameplay is basic as fuck.

To all the people who thought it was going to be a boss rush: did they ever say it at any point? Because all I've seen is people who thought it was going to be one just by the trailer, and people who quoted the first group as a "source".
Probably, since it's mostly just style over substance. But i'm still gonna get it, since it looks awesome.

>>340635971
Because it's not pixel """"art""""
The hype for this game has been excessive considering after all it's just a 2D sidescroller/platformer with a quirky art style.
I foresee this going the way of Unravel.
Rubberhose is such a cool underutilized style. Probably because making everything move all the time takes a lot of effort.

It could flop, but I'm going to judge the game based on the gameplay, not sales. The visuals have my balls, and I like the Commander Keen style level select. It could be a good game, but I'll have to wait the timed exclusivity to go away.
>>340636058
You're the umpteenth person to bring this up so you get to be the umpteenth person to be told that there's a fucking toggle for the aberration you cockguzzling fagrider.
Feels weird having megaman movement, shooting lasers out of your finger to kill shit, but having an old timey cartoon look. Doesn't seem like stuff Mickey Mouse would do.

YOU! SINBAD THE SAILOR!
>>340636043
Pixel art probably takes longer.
They need to sketch, draw then pixelize it
they only need to sketch and draw it here
What is it with this game that sends people in a crazy assumption rampage?
First people said it had been cancelled, then that it was just a boss rush, then that it was exclusive to the XBone, then to the Windows store, and now to Windows 10.
Microsoft wins E3 if after the conference they say this game is available.

>Do you honestly think chromatic aberration will be an optional thing in this game
Yes. Case in point: They built entire fucking levels for this game because people wouldn't stop crying about platforming segments. Chromatic aberration is the second biggest complaint, so it stands to reason they're gonna address it too.
You shitbird.
>>340637252

>Imma judge the game based on one level: the thread
Everyone crying about chromatic aberration needs to be culled so they don't pass on their pussy ass weak eye genetics to the next generation.
Oh wait this is /v/ never mind the next generation should be ok
>>340637554
>I'm gonna judge the game off the one level they showed us with the intention of impressing us.
That's perfectly valid. You wouldn't go see a movie after watching a terrible trailer because "maybe they only showed us the shitty parts and the rest is good.".
They've nailed the atmosphere of 1930s cartoons so well I keep expecting to see some era-appropriate racism.
>>340637749
It doesn't bode well if this is all they have to offer for their platforming announcement.
Why the fuck are all you goddamn babies whining about chromatic aberration? I thought the whole damn point of the look is to recreate all this old animation but apparently it's too authentic for your delicate baby eyes.
I predict it will flop, but that it will be great and have a small, dedicated fanbase
it will be ran at AGDQ every year and over time, and the average person will be aware of it but not play it
when the sequel comes out, it will blow up like dark souls did, available on more platforms, and everyone will call fans of the original xbox fanboys who can't accept the original was shit

>>340638423
It's not important to the style though. Nobody actually associates it with old projectors, if they did you wouldn't have to go around telling people that it's accurate. Nobody would have noticed if it was never implemented.
Even if it is accurate it's a bad idea to include it because it's ugly as shit. Making art is about deciding what's best not doggedly sticking to what something "should" be like.
>>340635053
It actually fits with art style of the game you dolt.
>>340635579
So are the Persona games and Jet Set Radio games. Style can carry a game if it's stylish enough.

Seems like a huge problem for small teams making modern platformers is that we've already had the age of God-tier platformers a long time ago, so its hard to do anything of note that can be compared to any of countless legendary platformers that came before it. A pure platformer just seems hard to get right.

>Why is it taking so damn long?Generic indie platformer #8874 can't be that complicated, can it?
They are making all the graphics as if it was a 1920s cartoon. Hand drawn, hand painted cels and backgrounds. This takes an ENORMOUS time to do, even for Disney it takes years to get a movie's worth of animation, and they are tracing real peoples movement half the time.
>>340639553
No it didn't
It sold about the same as the original on the Dreamcast

>>340644204
That was his point, you idiot. I disagree with his point, but he is correct that neither bugs nor chromatic whateverthefuck were part of the developer's vision.
>>340643762
Sure maybe, but I'm not complaining about the game itself, the platforming sections look sort of generic, but the game overall looks fun. Chromatic aberration was made popular due to the CG photorealism guys who figured out if they split the reds or blues in their digital images it made them look more "photorealistic" as in real to a photo taken on a shitty disposable camera and not real to life. Since then it's been used and abused in digital art ranging from 3D CG to fucking digital paintings (where a lens isn't even inherent).
I don't give a fuck about what /v/ thinks for the past few years but as a person who works with cameras and knows how far people will go to limit chromatic aberration in film and photography I find it really unsightly and distracting.
I know /v/ anons like to shitpost about niggling things just so they can turn every game into a disaster, but this waters down legitimate criticisms as "oh, a shitposter."
>>340643898
I found Future to be the better game of the two. I found both to be style over substance. That doesn't mean I think they're bad at all, style, like I said, can carry a game. Sometimes is not important that what you're doing is super-complicated, "deep" gameplay. Style is really important game design.
>>340644371
But I clearly explained how it related to endless runner games, which is why I pointed you back to it when you kept repeating yourself.
>>340642728
If you're going to be autistic about it, let me rephrase myself without using the words "endless runner":
The level design looks like procedurally generated garbage.
You're the idiot who assumed I was talking about gameplay or something -- of course it's not an endless runner.
Gonna play this for sure once i get the xbone, whenever the hell that might be
I'm actually very excited for it, same with mn9. I enjoyed the drama around the latter and it baffled me how the developers kept fucking up, but it still looks like a fun as fuck game. I can't be the only one thinking like that?
>>340637765
They showed plenty of good challenging bosses tho, this is probably an early game level
>>340644703
No you didn't. You just said "it looks like an endless runner", then referred back to where you said it looks like an endless runner.
>>340644480
>the platforming sections look sort of generic
The platforming is not supposed to be the point of the levels
Have you ever played Gunstar Heroes?
This is a Run 'n Gun game not a Platformer
People keep expecting an Action Platformer like Megaman here but this is not what the game is supposed to be...the game is inspired by Gunstar Heroes,Contra 3,Alien Soldier etc. those kind of games which never really had interesting platforming in them and were just about shooting the living crap out of everything while avoiding to get fucked
Amazing art-style with shallow gameplay. Platforming was a huge mistake.
>>340634803
I don't think it will sell well at all if it's going for an Xbone exclusive. No exclusive on that system has ever done well
>>340644852
Oh, I'm sure. It will probably be a fun game if the between boss segments don't drag it down. I'm just saying it's fine the judge at least the platforming part of the game off the single level they showed us because trailers are meant to showcase the most impressive bits.
And "early game" in no way excuses "boring".
>>340634803
Is that Bluto from Popeye?
>>340644537
>I found Future to be the better game of the two.
That's because you're a pleb who prefers easy games
Jet Set Radio was designed very well you have no idea what you're talking about
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSMJoPfOv0c
Just because you have no skill doesn't make it a "style over substance" game which it is not
The game's stages are very well designed and award skilled play
They gameplay is arcade-y in it's design in that you have to tag targets on a timer while the police is chasing you and the faster you can do it the better the rank and getting all the targets including the green ones can be very challenging
The characters also each feel different with some of them having less spray cans, some of them being heavier/lighter,some of them being weaker etc.
It's far from "style over substance" no matter what people might say
JSR is a well designed game albeit a bit dated one
>>340643449
If it is on steam, then the game is saved.
>>340644890
If you don't understand what a level in an endless runner platformer looks like, then why are you lecturing me on not knowing what an endless runner is? Anyone who's played an endless runner platformer would understand what the level design in one of those looks like, thus understanding what I meant when I compared the level design in this game to that.
Excuse me for assuming that you've played one before. You see, and endless runner platformer has generic mashes of platforms and enemy placements -- which is necessary because it's randomly generated nature. When I compare this game to an endless runner, I am saying that very little thought went into the design.

You could do this same shit in Future though. I get that JSR came first so you feel the need to defend it, especially since it's a Dreamcast game, but I never said it bad, bro. Calm yourself. I just said I like JSRF better.
>>340644972
I did play Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug(s). It's not just the platforming it's also the gunplay and enemy positioning, which really feels like an afterthought, and in fact probably is. Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug are actually balanced around weapon types and weapon pickups in the level, and in the case of Gunstar Heroes weapon combination is an important part of the game. I'm not saying it looks abysmal, it just looks very generic.
>>340647285
That's fucking stupid. When did devs start considering listening to people in Twitter to be a good idea? I can't think of a time that it's improved a game at all.
Of course it's probably executive meddling rather than the studios themselves.
>>340634803
>Realized 3 quarters into development that Bosses are suppose to test skills you've learned in a level.

Even the first Metal Slug and Contra games had more platforming and better enemy positioning than that.
This is shallow as fuck.

Nigga what?
Gunstar had 2 player types, several weapons, melee combat that had throws, punching, kicks, slides and wall jumps and tight ad fuck level design that brought it all together.
That game was anything but standard.

What kind of excuse is that? They have a ton of material to take notes from, even from their own genre and they deliver a pretty shallow one. They don't have to reinvent the wheel, just make it good. The level design and enemy placement doesn't really make use of the mobility you have and that's a crime.

I wish devs understood that it's not just a matter of taste.

>>340648494
The game's difficulty isn't in question.
This level doesn't look difficult either. It's repetitive. After going a small distance, you've already experience what the entire level has to offer. It drags on for far too long and doesn't offer anything new even after the halfway point.
MS1 kept it interesting by changing up the backgrounds and layout. Start is pretty flat, you're introduced to enemies and weapon pick ups in a jungle environment. You get into an open field with a crashed plan where a mini boss fight with a helicopter happens. After that, you move on to a swamp area with new enemy types and a hell of a lot more platforming. You're introduced to the Metal Slug and given a big barricade to go nuts on. You then reach a waterfall area with tanks and finally come across the boss.
>>340647695

It's not an excuse, I didn't even say that Cuphead did it well. I'm just saying that everyone has already played the "all time greats", and that trying to make more is always going to get you compared to them.
It's like trying to get people who've played older RPGs excited about modern "RPGs" without a shred of the depth of choice.

I enjoy games like that. IDK why every single game that gets released needs to be exactly the fucking same. Anything that isn't designed to make the player feel like a super skilled expert gets shit on. Maybe I just want to play something that has great visual/audio direction.
For example, neither Dead Space or Nier were difficult or deep in terms of gameplay. Yet both had great things going on in the audio department.

Id put what's been shown of the game so far on the same level as ms1's start but more difficult.
The only question is if this is an early part of the game or not, and I think it probably is given the background and the fact that normally these gameplay trailers are from the start of the game.
Also the boss fights seem to be the main focus of this game and they all look great so far.
>chromatic aberration
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

>>340649797
You didn't fucking play Gunstar Heroes or just played the first level if you think that. Also doesn't address that there's a lot more going on in terms of weapons and movement options in Gunstar.
>>340634803
Of course. There's no market for these kinds of games right now.
>>340649249
What do you even want? This game has chromatic aberration. That's an indisputable fact. How the fuck are we supposed to discuss it if according to you we have to tiptoe around the phrase because you think it's a buzzword?
You think it's a buzzword because you've seen it a lot recently and apparently you can't fathom that it's because it's an actual recent trend. No according to you if you complain about one thing too much it becomes a buzzword and is therefore meaningless.
People dislike chromatic aberration because it's not just ugly, it's offensive to your eyes. Ugly games can be fine, plenty of fun games are ugly or have ugly areas. Chromatic aberration when used completely unsubtly can be outright painful to look at. It's not a meme to hate it when it's literally simulating a fucking error.
>>340636661
I see absolutely no difference between these two pictures. What should I be seeing?
>>340650001
There is no first level. It's a stage select.

That's what majority of /v/ users don't get, which is why using chromatic aberration as a criticism for this game is fucking retarded. It's like if you wanted to make a horror game and wanted to simulate 70's slasher films then used film grain to enhance the experience, but retards like the ones in this thread complain about it because it's "offensive to your eyes".
It's a buzzword because anytime it's spotted shitposters cling on to it like it's some kind of legitimate criticism, overlooking the context of it's use in the first place just to get (You)'s.

As >>340649616 already explained, difficulty has nothing to do with it - what platforming (including enemy placement) there is is better designed. A mishmash of platforms and enemies might be difficult, but it's not necessarily good design.

Most likely. It'll probably end up being $15-$20 which is too much IMO, so I'll wait for a sale. Also, gameplay wise and despite the Steamboat Willy aesthetic, it ironically reminds me a lot of Mickey's Mousecapade on the NES which was kind of like a Super Mario Bros 3 and Mega Man hybrid ripoff.

It's just platform after platform strung together. There is no variety in either gameplay or art. You'd be hard pressed to find a reason why it's _good_ level design -- and if you can't show how it's good then it must be bad or mediocre by default.
>people have said they thought other games did things well
Which is a perfectly valid argument. "This game had good level design because X, this other game does not so the level design is not as good." It's pretty simple, anon.

Not that that changes the fact that all DKC games have better level design than what's been shown here.

Metal slug one's first level was four minutes long though, while this cuphead level was only one minute. You spend around as much time in each of the subareas in the first level as you do in the level shown in the preview.
>>340655283
>Metal Slug is based around levels
This isn't true, for one. The bosses in MS games are great; the whole thing is great.
Even if you were correct, you still haven't said how that excuses anything. It is not okay for a part of the game to be bad because they focused on the bosses, especially when that part could be easily removed. If a Mario game made you go through a terrible mini-game or driving section between levels would you be defending that because "Mario focuses on the platforming"? Of course not. That Mario game might even be good, but it would be good _in spite_ of the terrible sections between the good bits. Any criticism against the terrible bits remains valid.
>And it's only the first level you can't judge everything from the first level
It's the level they chose to show in order to impress us. This is what they consider impressive.
Regardless, yes, you _can_ judge things from the first level. Do you think other games make the first level intentionally bad? No, the design principles in the first level continue throughout the entire product. It's not like I'm judging it based off the difficulty, which of course then the first level would be easier.
>>340635246
Damn, that's kind of disappointing. I loved the idea when I first saw it and I'm a sucker for rubber hose cartoons, but the levels and platforming look kind of basic. I hope that was just demo gameplay.

What they've shown isn't fucking bad though. There's more enemy variety than in the first level of MS1 (8 vs 6 not counting boss but counting weapon drop reskin) despite being one fourth the length with more varied platforming than the swamp section of the first metal slug level despite both sections taking around the same amount of length to complete.
It also has optional collectables in the form of the coins just like MS has with POWs.
It doesn't show a vehicle section but we already know those are in the games from other trailers we've seen.

Seriously, the game's not out yet, we're going just by what's shown. I'm referring to the "platforming gameplay" sections and not just the simple platforms. They're not even really based around shooting enemies as fast as you can, you have more options to counter shooting enemies, enemy density is low, and the platform size and spacing gives you a lot of breathing time to take care of the few enemies present. It really doesn't move like one of those games at all and feels more like a generic platforming action game that has "just kinda there" level design and enemy placement. Very standard-fare.

Probably people thinking you're the other guy then. That can happen on a board where nobody knows who any of the posters are. People just get profiled as "for" or "against" something and it's assumed that they agree with every other post made by someone who shares their perceived view.

Its too Japanese. Millennials grew up with only western games
>>340657739
Its bankrolled by MS, stop begging
>implying sonyggers buy games
Why the fuck has bloodborne only sold 2 mil?
>>340635246
Looks pretty good, hope it get to Contra levels of ridiculous
So I know I'm late to the thread, but can someone tell me if they are still using place holder audio in all of their videos?
Like the sound is unbearable and doesn't fit the 1930's-40's style of animation at all
Like it's always deafiningly loud music tracks covering little to no sound effects that sound like someone making pew pew noises with their mouth.
Like this is legit something that would make me not buy this game while everything else has made me really want to love it.

I heard it sold 2 mil

>Thinking 1/5th of Xbone owners bought it
>>340658893
I want to know this too. When is the release on this game?
>>340654646
Not him, but I will tell you a interesting fact. After the success of Donkey Kong Country, Nintendo actually started telling Miyamoto to "make games like Donkey Kong Country". Miyamoto didn't really listen however, and saw the artstyle of Donkey Kong Country as "a fad".

>They're not even really based around shooting enemies as fast as you can
They clearly are
Too much shit was going on in it
One of the devs who is good at the game was playing it too
>>340658580
How have you not heard of Gunstar Heroes or Contra?
>>340658918
highly unlikely, I bought it but none of my friends on Xbox Live did
>>340640896
But he clearly was?
>>340660071
Yeah, played and loved both. If that's what the game is gonna be like, that ain't so bad.
Literally the only Xbone exclusive I'm interested in at the moment. I'll play it when it's a Playstation Plus game in a few years.
>>340634803
it looked good
two years ago
now it is like... ok
i hope the gameplay is not shit
the graphics hyping is already too strong to believe that the game is even fun
tiiveeage

(cont)
the more you hype the game, the worst the gameplay is
ie: hotline miami: wrong number
years of hype
levels are literally SHIT built in two weeks
I think they missed their big chance by waiting this long.
It'll get drowned by other titles on release.
>>340666717
>how to pretend you're stopping time
I can see it working. They have these articles for pretending to be a vampire and shit
>>340667261
never mind replied to a wrong fucking thread for some reason
>chromatic abberation in hand-drawn 2d animated game
I hope this atrocity will never see light of a day
