I'm new to the series and have heard there's something weird with the second game

2 is arguably optional to play.

2 sucks and is last chronologically so you can skip it.

1,3,4. 2 Is a tire fire of a game, removes all of the good parts of the combat and the level design is horrendous.
2 has best Dante, and his hair is truly magnificent. Everything else in the game is a fucking shit.
DMC takes place before all those so you should start there.

Don't skip 2, it's very easy and short. You can even enjoy itironically.
Honestly I'd rather p lay DmC than 2. But 1,3, and 4 is how you should play the games.

Just play them in release order.
Chronologically it goes 3 > 1 > 4 > 2 but actually playing them in that order would be completely fucking retarded.
If you get to 2 and don't like it (mainly because it's shit) you can feel free to just skip it and move to 3.
