I can't speak for the other guy, but I don't even know what "layer the bangs" even means. When I was in highschool I knew even less about this stuff. I didn't avoid describing what I wanted out of social anxiety or anything - I just legitimately didn't know the first thing about hair.
These days I give slightly more detailed instructions (short on the sides, take the fringe back above my eyes, cut it in such a way that I can wax it back if I want to etc), but I still don't really know that much about this stuff. I'm pretty sure my haircut wold fall in the normal range now though.
