Yes, that's what I said, Japan. Also I'll point fingers at Moege because that's what is translated the most. It's easy and most fan-translators don't understand complex Japanese anyway. Hell sometimes they don't even translate and just clean up a MT.
YU-NO is literally always a recommended VN since it was translated, and it took more than 15 years, that's pretty damn good. It's one of Japan old go to recommends too, so if you really want to bask in fan praise, learn Japanese.

The only real downside to 999 is that it makes a lot of the twists, especially in VLR, seem obvious. He revisits a lot of concepts. Still one of the best out there, though.

Definitely recommend it. Without a doubt it has a slow starting where it sets a lot of (needed) exposition, I think that's the right term. I like this kind of starting, but otherwise it will feel a bit droll for the first couple of hours. Once that's done though, it is fantastic for the rest of episode 1, all of episodes 2 and 3, most of episode 4, and 5-8 are kinda hit or miss with people.

I actually dislike Haru's route the most for a couple of reasons despite it having an actual conclusion to the Maou storyline. My main gripe though is with Haru.
Haru is a pretty unlikeable main heroine because she's such a bitch. Even if you disagree, you have to admit she is THE ONLY heroine to stand contrary to the theme ofrevenge creates an eternal cycle of suffering. You also then remember that only the villains (Tokita and Maou) are the ones who never get over their revenge and are both given bad endings as a result. Yet Haru succumbs to it and the plot goes 'who cares lol' to the point that the epilogue had to basically retcon the esoteric happy ending away just so it doesn't leave a sour taste in everyone's mouth reminding them why Haru a shit.
Honestly, the last chapter could've been done so much better.

The visual novel is a really great medium that combines music, visuals, and long form writing all together. And it's reduced to, and be honest with yourselves, pornography and unimaginative fantasy for the most part. Correct me if I am wrong, but most visual novels are centered around following a female character around, and then you fall in love or have sex with her...almost all plot and conflict comes from being attached to this female character. It makes for the feeling of "once you've read one visual novel, you've read them all." Of course not EVERY visual novel is like this, but a very large majority are.
The point is that there should be more variety in these novels, specifically less fucking and love stories and more idk action, politics, philosophy etc that aren't driven by falling in love with some 2D whore.

The point of the game is to learn to get over revenge and learn to forgive. Maou's little brother is his one remaining lifeline to humanity and seeing his little brother find happiness is enough to make him think twice about enacting a plan to get revenge on Gonzou that wouldn't really make him feel any better anyways.
Now the reason why he still goes through with the plan in Haru's route is because seeing his little brother fall in love with the daughter of the man who ruined BOTH of their lives (according to him) triggers him hard enough to say 'fuck it' to everything, throwing away his humanity and embracing the Devil within him.
