There are people who pirate the game because fuck paying for things, but there are also people who use it as a demo and end up buying a game they may not have even tried otherwise. Even if you didn't buy it, just talking about the game online still generates buzz that might convince others to buy it. Buzz that never would have happened if you didn't play the game.
I would imagine piracy has a disproportionate effect of smaller games, both because AAA companies are going to make their millions no matter what you do, and because smaller games likely have a more savvy player base that actually know how to pirate things.
