My friend is playing dark soul and he is using the zweihander right off the bat. So why is that a bad idea?

The bad part, and I've seen this happen a lot, with friends, stragner and on myself too, but Biggie - Smalls will fuck you up easier if you run that weapon, it's great, but tell him to carry a nice leveled straight sword for that battle alone, specially since now rarely anyone is there for summoning and Solaire gets wrecked.

it's a quality weapon, not a strength one. and that would be the Demon's Greataxe or, in a more viable note, the Great Club.
and the meme 2hander is the chaos one, not regular. by the time you can forge a chaos Zweihander you'll probably be using better weapons.

and you'll have a hard time hitting any fast boss with a slow weapon, that much is obvious.
