The existing model was a free stock image photograph. It wasn't based on it, it's literally the same image with some shitty filters and edits lazily thrown onto it. This was for one of the main characters and arguably could have been one of her most important moments. In a universe that did a good job of making interesting aliens. And this was in a game that was already heavily criticized for overwhelming degrees of laziness in a highly regarded franchise.

it feels like it has a lot more cut corners. far fewer dialog options, wonky animations(the running is hilarious) and some really lazy texture work at times. some sequences are atrociously bad and yes the ending feels half-assed. ME1 has some jank to it, but you could still feel the effort they put into it in trying to figure out how things are still going to work. 3 just feels like they either ran out of time or stopped giving a shit at points.
but its still pretty good for what it is and i find some its main story missions are the best in the series.

You forgot to mention that it essentially makes the majority of decisions in the past games completely pointless. If any characters died, they're just replaced in the story by a generic character of the same species that does the exact same thing anyway. Things like sparing the Rachni queen amounted to nothing more than letting you know that your galactic readiness was slightly higher thanks to rachni workers helping construction.

I liked it, some parts more than others, up until the ending which was mainly due to the fact that I was convincing myself that I'd still get some sort of awesome battle involving all the various groups and people I helped. I never played ME3 to be honest.

Remember Dead Space 3? Came out the very next year and was yet another shitty 3rd entry in an EA franchise I loved and thought there was huge potential in. I liked 2 the most as well, was really digging the space western feel. Plus I found the squad mates more interesting (and the best ME1 m80s returned), missions a lot more enjoyable and the shooting combat was a lot tighter. It did have a lot of flaws though. I know why they do this, and its a neat performance trick, but it still pisses me off.
At least on PC enable some of the non-"trick" good graphics. Multiplats do this shit all the time where they implement something so that the game will run at > 20 fps on consoles, but dont let you disable it on PC.
For example, FXAA/other post AA methods in a forward rendered game. It takes literally 3 lines of code to enable MSAA on pc, yet many games force you to use the shitty aa. Deferred renderers are a different story, but if your graphics programmer knows his shit he should have MSAA working in it in under a day.

Instead they have to travel by their power into to the closest system which was the Baterian one as seen in ME3 with the Batarian husks.

I always flick between 1 and 2 being my favourite. Every time I remember something I loved about 2, I remember something that kind of sucked about it compared to 1. And then I remember all the shit I loved about 1, but how much better the step up in gameplay felt coming into 2.
It's hard to choose because in a lot of ways, 2 corrects 1's flaws and 1's strengths are pretty much 2's weaknesses.
