What's your absolute favorite video game level/area of all time?

Well Ash Lake was just a straight line with giant enemy clam enemies and a buggy hydra, so to me it was kinda shit. If you're talking about aesthetics though, then I agree it's pretty good.
The museum in modern warfare 2
Fortune City
>>340444867
Best music and atmoshphere in the game, imo.

>that feeling of insignificance and fear when you first walk in
>music starts playing
It still gets me, every time
>>340443485
what is it with deep underground areas being so good?
>>340443485
the big vine dome at the end of the beaver race in majora's mask
Loved how tense the atmosphere was in the arena while the outside has this distinctive holidays kind of feeling.
>>340443485
>>340445928
it's like the detective chapters but with fighting in beetween
I love swamps or marshes in games. Combine that with my favourite video game and I'm sold.
>>340443485
Opportunity.
Tyria
>>340445413
this was amazing to see too
>>340445928
>shits all over Paper Mario's aesthetic
>best area
>>340443485
I didn't like ash lake at all. Sure it's atmospheric as hell the first time, but that obnoxiously loud music that repeats itself over and over made me have to turn the music off completely, it was giving me a headache even when I lowered the volume. And the hydra is always annoying to fight. Other than that its a really fucking linear area with pushover enemies and one the shittiest covenants in the end. Kind of sad if this is your "favorite video game level of all time" just because the scenery looks pretty.
It's just so comfy

From Mind: Path to Thalamus
This area is frozen in time. It's a cool feeling walking near suspended water waves.
Brain Scorcher and Wild Territory really hit the spot. The time right between having a rusty AK or FN-2000 is the most fun to me.
>>340444325
I loved Valak Mountains.
Satorl Marsh is another favourite of mine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTTWjh3JqtM
Most of the game was amazing and comfy for me. But the start was especially appealing.
>>340447552
That's pretty much >>340446362 too
Some magic phenomenon called the jade wind swept over that area did a number on everything like petrifying forests and turning an ocean into solid jade. Running around frozen waves is the best.
Camp Gibraltar - BF 2142
Probably Stockholm Syndrome, but whatever.
I dont know which to chose...
>>340445184
>YFW EVERYTHING, the abyss, the tomb of the giants, new londo, anor londo, EVERYTHING is just the canopy of a forest of gigantic trees
Excellent music, that cool waterfall, giant tree village... and still, even being that awesome, there were lots of other areas in the game that I liked nearly as much
>>340448145
I think FFXIII has something similar too, doesn't it?
There's an area where the water is all crystalized.
>>340445184
Let's sing the Ash Lake theme, /v/. I'll get us started.HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH

Guild Wars II? Trash game. The Jade Sea? Brilliant idea.
Spooky in conkers bad fur day
northern crater too, outright alien enemies and it felt like you were in a womb
>>340449143
Bruh Jade Sea was a major explorable area in GW1
>>340449143
Oh no anon, Jade Sea was already in 1. I'd never say something nice about GW2.

Ash lake was a fucking masterpiece of an area
>ascend down an ancient tree, not knowing where you are even going
>suddenly a shimmering light at the end of the tunnel
>a vast, dark area that feels like it belongs to another world, forgotten by even the most ancient beings
>you slowly walk out to a beach, with sand as white as a thousand skulls, glistering with every step
>next to the most ancient bonfire, your old comrade, Siegmeyer lies on the ground, but his soul has long escaped this forbidden place, and the only sound remaining is the quiet sobbing of her daughter, echoing a thousand times back from the bottomless lake
>as you ascend further into this boundless territory, a hyrda, probably as old as the ancient dragon quietly watches your every step
>you follow the single glimmering white line of sand on the lake, a single misstep away from falling into the black void that is the ancient lake
>as you clear through the branches of a world tree, your eyes fix upon an ancient dragon, a living monument, which exists outside the boundaries of all earthly elements and time
>knowing that no living being has, and will experience a meeting with a being as fundamentally ancient as this, all you can do with your last bit of strength is fall onto your knees
>and pray

>>340449837
It's just a shame that the gameplay there was boring as shit.
But maybe that just added to the aesthetic

I'm glad this is always one of the first few posts.
>>340444585
Literally this, I hate not being a special snowflake but there's no way around it
It's just perfect for what mh should be, flat areas balanced for gameplay, not having to climb a fucking tower every time the monster goes in an other area, gameplay variety with the water sections.
>>340450390
maybe /v/ isn't dead yet.
>>340444325
I was so mad that I triggered the cutscene at the bottom before night fell. I saw this vast open area and knew there would be a cutscene coming, but I got bored and went for one of those shitty items, and bam, triggered.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78xB_GqLwPY
>>340443485
This area was amazing because it had music.
I wish more areas had music. Listening to nothing but clack clack gets boring after a while.

Why didn't they even more Warcraft tunes in the new movie? There was a small hint of it in the Lothar theme, but no true 10/10 OST like from any of the previous games.
>>340451478
because 90% of the people who watched the movie wouldn't have gotten the reference any way.
>>340451682
Still would have had a more comfy atmosphere than the generic score they had now.
Not actually my favourite, but it's one of the first that came to me.
The level itself isn't great, with all the platforms and poison butterflies, but my god it's one of the more gorgeous paradise-type levels I've ever seen. I loved how it developed from a normal forest to what is clearly supposed to be Heaven as you just progressed through the stage.
And that scenery and that music, man.

>>340451902
the plot of the movie was a revision of a revision
the whole of the warcraft franchise (and blizzard IP in general) is now built upon rewriting history, we even had an entire expansion dedicated to that concept
they don't care about making something comfy or staying loyal to old material, they just want to make a quick buck off the newest generation of 'gamers'. blizzard went from having one of the most loyal and secure fanbases to this weird revolving door of f2p models and revisionists that hold nothing more sacred than company stocks
>>340452534
>you live long enough to see yourself become the villainMovie was still pretty fun though

>oh fuck those are piles of dead bodies

I was gonna post Downtown or Santa Monica.
The City of Pathologic. Seems like such a comfy place to live in, lost in time, full of ancient traditions, insane architecture, and philosophizing weirdos with magical powers

>>340458110
The Void was just full of amazing places to wander around in. Such a ridiculously gorgeous game at times.
>>340450387
Yeah no, fuck you and fuck that hellhole.
Just post the Kaedweni camp too, gather up the shittiest fucking areas in the series rivaling the Swamp from W1.
>>340444598
my actual nigga
>mfw T-Rex fight
Another one from The Void.
>>340443485
Why is it that secret areas with chanting music are so comfy?
I just want to play the game based on the atmosphere of that place and I haven't even played the game before.
>>340449837
>>knowing that no living being has, and will experience a meeting with a being as fundamentally ancient as this
seath is as old as him lmao
>>340459878
Also, them being ancient adds something to the atmosphere I can't explain.
>>340446217
I also like game swamps, especially when they're really bleak like that. I really don't know why though, and I rarely play games with them anyway.
>>340458110
This. Really a complex and well-realized place.
>>340459301
>>340459563
And these too. Ire's Pond and Hull(that's what it was called right?) were definitely my favorite areas in The Void.
>>340453081
>3
lol
>>340443485
I have too many favorite levels to choose from, but this deserves and honorable mention.
>>340453449

>>340460282
I have really high hopes for the Pathologic remake. The gameplay in the original is really not great, but the story and world design are earnest attempts at real art that no other game comes close to. Walking simulators wish they had a fraction of the ambition and talent that went into this game's narrative.
>>340446315
the only good city on Pandora
>>340461534
I agree. While the moment to moment gameplay isn't great, I find how the gameplay was designed and implemented on a larger scale quite unique and impressive. It's not just some "fun thing" to do between "story bits", it's essential to telling the story.
Because of that, Pathologic's one of the few things that I can actually call a truly artistic *game*, and makes me feel that IPL are one of the only developers that really knows what games are capable of
>>340455330
when there were still night cycles and it turned green? HNNNNNNNNG
>>340449837
Hydras are not that ancient, they're born where an everlasting dragon is died. The first hydra is where you slay Kalameet, the second is in the place where everlasting dragons once lived.
>>340459346
Almost all of the series shitty areas are from W2
>>340460929
fuck that was such a good level
the actual gameplay was alright, but the fucking atmosphere, music, setting, voice acting...too fucking good
>>340443485
Central Yharnam
This level had a very alien atmosphere (that fit the levels theme perfectly) with beautiful visuals complimented with one of the best soundtracks to ever grace gaming. Making it one of the best area/level aesthetically
https://youtu.be/UbwLYxYIavo
>>340448005
So comfy
>awesome area music still plays through the encounters
>dat rain
>people being slaughtered in the streets
For atmosphere this area can't be beat

I think he meant the part of ash lake that you can access through the well in firelink shrine
