It's selling only half of what Command sold, and Command was a big enough disappointment that Nintendo put the series on a decade long hiatus. Obviously it's not a 100% done deal that Star Fox is over, but it's not looking good.
The best I would hope for in the near future would be an HD collection with a remastered HD version of 643D, Star Fox Adventures, and Star Fox Assault with netplay. Even that seems unlikely right now, but at least it would be a cheap low-risk project that Nintendo could put out as an apology to some of the fans who were really burned by Zero, and test the waters to see if the franchise really is FUBAR. Maybe they could throw in Star Fox 1 and 2 on the disc also just for completion sake.

I think that if there's another Star Fox game, it won't be a reboot so much as a reintroduction. A brand new scenario rather than a retread of the original game, with team Star Fox already being established and the game taking place sometime after Assault, but not being a direct continuation of the story. It will be designed and written in such a way as to hook people who haven't ever played a Star Fox game before, but it will not beat series veterans over the head with redundancy either.
More importantly, I don't think that another game will happen unless Nintendo gives permission to a new producer to oversee the game without Miyamoto's direct involvement. I think he is going to be having his position at Nintendo scaled back, and they will be transitioning him towards semi-retirement. He will be around as somewhat of a company mascot the way Stan Lee is for Marvel, but I think his days of active leadership are over. Star Fox Zero was his chance to prove he still had what it takes to actively manage the franchises he helped create, but he kind of blew it.

2. They'd be dumb not to. She's one of the most popular characters in the franchise, and waifu bait sells. Making Zero a sausage fest with no Krystal certainly didn't do it any favors.
3. They can ignore Command outright, sure, but every game before that sold over a million copies. Zero is an even bigger laughing stock than Command. If they're going to tie the new game to any previous work, it should be the games that sold millions of copies rather than one game that barely sold a quarter million copies and will only be remembered for badly it disappointed everyone.

It doesn't matter how much it sold you tie your story into the previous effort not into a game that was a decade ago. This was the same complaint about Zero so doing it twice is a stupid strategy.

Believe me, the latter is by far the most likely scenario. Star Fox Zero has in all probability done irreparable damage to Star Fox as a brand, to the point that Nintendo might not even want anything to do with it anymore.
Star Fox Assault left us with a nice open universe that could be explored in any number of directions. It was also the best Star Fox game post-64, so it's as good a place as any to start when trying to figure out where to take the gameplay for a modern generation.
Wether or not there's ever another Star Fox game doesn't change the fact that Zero is a terrible game and will ultimately be ignored and forgotten, while a decade later Assault still has a fandom. Zero will be overshadowed by Star Fox 64, because it's an inferior version of Star Fox 64. All of its story, one liners and memes are lifted directly from Star Wars 64 and there is nothing new that it will be remembered by, other than how much everyone hated the controls.

It's not just "the head" of Platinum, the entire company bases their games on sexy female characters. If Platinum had more control over the game rather than just being the textures/models guys, we probably would have gotten a much different game since they generally embrace sex appeal rather than being prudes about it.
The only way Platinum's attitude towards Krystal would have changed is if the whole company started abandoning their roots and being more "family friendly", and at that point I think we can agree Platinum would be dead to fans.
