Not really.
The few people who care about the next games translation are pretty pissed it is by the same guys as this.

I'm not against trying to make the localized version seem a bit more natural as Japanese is a much stiffer language and direct translations are often awkward. However way too many groups go overboard with this basically it's always something like

Original: "I refuse!"
Translated: "No way, Jose! You can bet your sweet ass I'm not gonna agree to anything you say, boyo!"

There's a difference between Translating, localizing, and rewriting.

Rewriting and localizing can be done very well, but those just seem very awkward to read. If any of you faggots are into anime, check out the dub of Sergeant Frog. 90% of the humor of that show is japanese culture humor so the writers had to localize it and what they did was genius.
>>
>>340416480
no, we don´t.
Most translators are a bunch of complete retarded faggots. Sometimes, they even break games sidequests by inventing retarded riddles that doesn´t exists in the original game.
This usually only serves to boost piracy, original fan translations and people learning japanese.

That's pretty much what localization means.

Localizationd have always been on rewrite tier. They only very vaguely (sometimes) follow the basic plot but almost always change character interaction, relations, and personality.

Basically most characters are written more down to earth originally and closer to how a Japanese person would actually speak (with extraordinary exceptions for "out there" oddball characters) whereas localization scripts are written in ways NO ONE speaks.

Localization is an old, ugly, outdated concept in our global market and interconnected world where everyone has the abilities to both learn about other cultures and actually communicate with people in those cultures in an instant. Localization is a dinosaur that had one purpose in the early days of video gsmes: to help video games, a new and unpredictable industry, burst into other countries in a more fractured and disconnected world.
>>
>>340421764

In Growlanser 3 for example, ghoul is "localized" as Guru, scissor as shisah, pharmacist as pharmakis. Do they even play the games they translate?

Where in the rules does it say /v/ can't talk about Japanese-made games? Maybe you should ask Hiro to make a board specifically for Western games so you don't have to put up with all the Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, Fire Emblem, etc threads.
>>
>>340429074
Because video games need gameplay. Since Visual Novels don't have gameplay either and don't go on /v/, it would dictate that it should go to /jp/. Especially since even if there -was- gameplay to talk about in weebshit (which there isn't), you faggots just talk about your "whyfoos".

The rest of the world understands games need gameplay. Only Japan can get away with it because of fanatical braindead weeaboos who will slurp up any excrement as long as it has an anime aesthetic. There's definitely some Western games that have awful gameplay, but that's still better than none whatsoever.
>>
>>340416480
Just learn Japanese faggots.

Like holy shit. 3 months with the 3 volumes of remembering the Kanji combined with Jisho.org is all you need to stumble your way through any game with a Japanese-English Dictionary.

Better yet, choose a high quality text filled RPG and by the time you finish stumbling through it you will be pretty damn good at the language and wont be stumbling anymore- you will 'git gud' at Japanese.

Look, just pound that kanji and basic grammar into your head over the summer, buy Persona 5 or something (fuck maybe Yakuza 6) in the fall (JP version of course) and force your way through it. Don't look up guides or translations. Translate that shit yourself. 3 months with remembering the Kanji and a good dictionary and you will have all the tools and core skills you need to do that on your own.

By the time you finish, you will be good enough at Japanese to basically read and understand anything you want.
>>
>>340429902
>The rest of the world understands games need gameplay

So that explains why the rest of the world also makes visual novels and games "without gameplay", too. Is your Japan hateboner taking so much blood from your brain that you can't think properly?

There's word for word literal, there's subjectively adapted, and then there's just making shit up by yourself.

>As long as it conveys the same general tone and sounds good it doesn't matter.
It's not. Moonspeak version has this guy addressing the monster and breaking off a cliche shonen hero line. The "adapted" version has the guy cracking wise and saying stupid shit that nobody would say to a random monster.
Also, making a character overly wordy if they generally aren't is changing that character. That's a no-no.

I'm assuming of course OP is not full of shit and capped the right screens. It'd be helpful to see a transcript of the entire scene in both languages.

>>
>>340421969
>Localizationd have always been on rewrite tier.
No. Localization is rendering one language's idioms and cliches into a more equivalent and legible English version. It's a product of experience working in both languages which separates the machine-translating chinamen from a savvy translator.
A cliche line like "Don't forget this" gets transformed to something like "I'll get you next time". A reference to Crayon Shin-chan gets turned into a Simpsons joke.
"Translators" who blatantly rewrite shit are creatively bankrupt and have no business working as an amateur or professional.
