No. Shovel Knight can't possibly be as lame and boring as galaxy. If bright colors and stars and objects with faces on them make you happy then get mario. If you actually want to play a good game go with Shovel Knight.

i've played it fine with my ds2.
i've assigned the swing and shake to the right analog stick, and during the few instances where you actually need the pointer i've used the mouse.
SMG2 was a bit more challenging in that regard, but i've finished that too.

They actually tried that before 3D land, but they realized the camera made mario too little for the 3DS screen.
3D land was a product of this realization. Don't know where's the interview but i think it's a Iwata asks.

SMG is better, but physical copies of it are probably cheaper than what you'd get on eshop
i never got the hype behind shovel knight. yeah the music's cool but the gameplay is just pogo-hopping on everything. everything it presents has been done before a zillion times.
Both games are pretty good.
Wait till a sale and scoop both up, or pirate/emulate them.
Shovel Knight is pretty good once you get used to its mechanics, though the invincibility power ups can be abused tremendously to help you outrace bosses.
Mario Galaxy isn't all too hard till you beat the game. Then you get infuriating levels like that fucking Luigi Purple Coins level.
