I went to FUCKING GameStop yesterday morning to pick up Odin Sphere, the cashier pegged me immediately and mentioned that it's available for preorder, so I agreed, and made sure to tell him how I only buy Japanese games on release. He congratulated me on being the first person to preorder the "Take Your Heart Edition".

Assuming that's even true, it'd also be to push more sales. Persona isn't super niche anymore. They can't just publish the game in December and expect to get by on the small handful of their dedicated fans. It's after the November shopping season (which is bigger than the December one, which is why no AAA games launch in December), and it'd be past the cut-off point for press coverage. All of the outlets get their game-of-the-year media ready at the end of November or early December, so any games launched after that, much less a long RPG, might get a "this game seems cool" nod at best. Then, it's stuck in the awkward position of having press outlets trying to remember what they liked about the game for the next year's GOTY media, assuming they allow a game from a previous year in.
You're sabotaging yourself if you launch a game in December and expect it to reach more than a very niche audience. When you would've launched in January at the earliest, why not wait like two extra weeks for a themed launch?
