Currently the Windows store is filled with app trash that literally does nothing and the few games that are on the store are treated like installing a game from the early 90s.
You install it and then either have an icon on your desktop or have to go through menus/folders to find it everytime.
Just copy Steam/GOG/Origin/Uplay and give me a list of my installed games that is directly tied to a community.

The games are run through the Windows 10 app store, it won't let you buy or play them on other Windows OS's. Spencer said UWP will be an open platform though, so there's a possibility you can run these games outside of the Windows Store someday, which leads to the possibility of them being cracked and backported somehow. Both Sony and Microsoft have realized that the PC market doesn't really affect console sales. It's why there are so many PS4 exclusive* (*also on PC) games. Yeah, Sony's first party games are PS4 only, but they usually don't give a shit if people play it on PC because at least they aren't playing it on an Xbone. Microsoft is porting every Xbone game to PC because it requires zero effort for them since both use DirectX, and just means extra money since the bases don't overlap much. The console market isn't going to be affected by pc of all things when the pc was crushing consoles visually with crysis and yet no one switched at the time. Especially after last gen when it was nearly of decade of staggering shit running at 20 fps and the pc was running circles around consoles even with parity. Everyone STILL waited for consoles even though console launch was shit. No one still switched to pc in mass. The pc clearly has it's own base that refuses to go to console as well.
The 300-400 console niche and marketing will always appeal. Having pc merged will also make their games come to us faster and that includes other shit but I won't get ahead of myself here too much until it's clear what ms has planned. All the consoles users see is which machine is stronger and which games they want to play more.

They can force an API lock, which effectively becomes an OS lock. Some games weren't truly locked as they were 'held ransom' for the new OS, like Halo 2 Vista and Crysis. Halo 2 was initially made to run only on Vista, but after enough complaints, they made a patch for Windows XP. Xbox was great, basically the spiritual successor to Dreamcast, made consoles more like PC's (I know people probably get mad at that, but it's undeniable Xbox HUEG was probably the most influential modern console in terms of hardware) and I still enjoy playing my modded Xbox today. Great emu machine. I'm looking through the Windows app store and a lot of the games on there coming to console are coming to PS4 as well.
