Why people are okay with this
Normalfags, the main demographic for games now, dont know they can have better.
Because it's purely cosmetic.
Why are you not okay with it? It's purely optional and only cosmetic.
I don't understand the reason to freak out if it's purely cosmetic
Can someone explain why there is frustration?
Not even kidding but those things are way more fun to open that csgo cases. Bought 11 loot boxes because Im not a poorfag and got 2 Legendaries.
>>340357605
Because cosmetics that you can earn by playing, too, don't give you a leg up in competition.
>>340357605
>Optional
>Cosmetic
>Earnable by playing
>>340357605
because all new map and heros are free
>>340358431
this desu
it's like a random prize instead of getting a random turd in csgo and having to pay to get a key to unlock it
Explain to me how microtransactions are any different from cosmetic dlc?
Oh right they're the same thing, the only difference is this game is made by blizzard so everyone flips their shit.
WoW has had this shit for years at this point, I'm not saying it's good or right, but it's nothing new.
>>340358452

>>340358331
>>340358395
>>340358696
Prove it
>>340357605
Future maps will be free. If purely cosmetic items fund it idgaf. It's how a cash shop should work
>>340357605
In the old days you would usually have to put a cheat code in or grind by completing x tasks to unlock stuff. They basically took out cheats in favor of paying to skip grinding or the unlocking process. It's way more jewish, but people who 100% games or close to it aren't even affected by it
>>340358696
They'll be as free as skins - have fun unlocking new heroes through crates :)
>>340358758
>what is self control
If you're that weak-minded then perhaps this game is not for you.
>>340358697
wait what
isnt it basically the same thing?
csgo crates drop for free and then you buy the key.
or am i missing something
>>340358912
You have to spend money to open CSGO crates unless they've changed out Valve does their crates. It's not the same as getting a free crate to open every now and then.
>>340358912
What you are missing is that you can flip csgo items for more steambux to buy more csgo items or video games
where as overwatch, all items are worthless because there is no community market to sell them
>>340357605
charging for shit that should be free is a bad look.
if blizzzard can get away with it, other developers will start doing it. just like how microsoft started charging for online and sony jump on board.
>>340358912
You buy or earn an Overwatch lootcrate and you just open it. No key. You don't even have to pay, you get one every time you level up
>>340357605
Because it doesn't hinder the game and might as well not be there. It's even less jewy than CS:GO which gives you boxes that can only be opened by paying
>>340358895
I don't play games to be constantly exercised in self-control. I do have it, but there's nothing good in the constant pressure. And before you argue that there isn't any pressure - there certainly is, that's the focus of this business model.
It depends really.
If you can get that stuff throught in-game currency, like in R6:Siege or CoH2 now, then i don't really mind, especially if it's just cosmetics.
If not, then it's a dick move.
>>340358696
u mean the rest of the game? I'll be sure to tweet a heartfelt thank you to Blizzard for all the free stuff
>>340359025
so it is even more of a waste of money

Most people aren't unless they
1) can be earned through gameplay
2) are purely cosmetic
Honestly, as a current game dev there is no reason not to put shit like this in because it's basically free money. Some idiot will buy them.
If you don't like the trend of putting shit like this into games AND a game have microtransactions that don't affect the game or can be earned through a reasonable amount of play just don't fucking buy them.
You should be more upset with the fucktards who encourage this stuff. Devs aren't doing it because they're greedy, they're doing it because it is guaranteed money for 0 effort. Blizz has probably already made more money off of the loot boxes than the sales of the game and all they did is take a pre-existing gameplay feature and say "...or you could buy it for real money" and people flipped shit and spent hundreds of dollars trying to get that one skin they will never get from a loot box anyway because retards.
IMO everyone should write their representatives and try to get this shit regulated like a real casino. That would stop that shit real fast. Suddenly it's more hassle if you have this cancer in your games AND the government gets more money to waste on bombs.
>>340357605
It's tacky but they're just cosmetics. If it was unique weapons or characters it'd be bullshit.
>>340359140
Yes, but these people will defend their purchases regardless so don't bother trying to understand their autism.
>>340359126
Then this game is not for you.
>>340358696
Game with barely any content.
>look guys you'll get the rest of the game for free if you keep buying our loot crates
Casuals are so easily manipulated.
>It's cosmetic
Has everyone forgotten about what started as sparkle ponies and what is now instant boosts to level 100 for sale?
>>340359130
Everything you can earn through the crates is also purchasable with currency in game. Some of the more lucrative things will, of course, cost more but no real money ever has to be spent.
>>340359298
Have you forgotten that you're a faggot?
>>340359170
If "you can get all the cosmetics ''''for free'''' without spending a cent" is an argument,
then it can also be argued that releasing heroes and maps through crates (or the currency FROM the crates) is also "free" and fits with what they said
>>340357605
Microtransactions aren't going anywhere so I just accepted that they'll be in games nowadays. I'll take cosmetics as microtransactions any day over weapons or boosters.
>>340359298
Then start a row when you get actual boosts for items.
>Not a poorfag
>Like the game and support it
>Want to look like a special snowflake
>Buy crate with my own money
>People care
>CS:GO crate drops for free
>Buy key
>Open for knife skin
>It's okay
>TF2 crate drops
>Buy key
>Get unique weapon
>It's okay
>?????
>>340359305
That's neat then, that's what i'm saying.
At this point it'd be really in everyones best interest for MP only games to be cheaper and have a system like that.
They'd probably make more money on the long run.
>>340359265
Which doesn't counter any of my arguments.
The simple fact that the content in the Loot Boxes are completely randomised is totally bullshit and a total psychological trick to making you want to purchase a more expensive box.
>>340359497
Nor does it invalidate any of mine. If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen.
>>340359456
CS:GO cases are fucking garbage. Never gotten anything worth shit.
>>340359491
My main issue is that unboxing duplicates only refunds you 1/5th of the cost which is still fine until you've unboxed the same legendary skin 3 times in a row now.
Jim Sterling made the perfect irrefutable argument about these Loot Boxes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWTsJZD3YFQ
>>340359497
Your arguments don't matter because this game is not for you
Why do you feel every single game in existence needs to completely cater to your tastes and must 100% follow your sensibilities?
>>340359538
theres more than one type?
>>340358827
This man I really don't know how to come back after you posted a reaction image with absolutely no argument at all

no wonder Konami turned to Pachinko you fuckers love gambling
>>340357605
>pity timer givers you a legendary at least every 10 boxes.
>However duplicates only give 20% of the gold value
I think it could balanced a bit better, but it's relatively fair.
>>340359576
But it's okay to buy randomized loot box keys in Counterstrike
It's okay to buy a hat in Team fortress. Or a gun. Or a key for a box that might drop these.
But suddenly Overwatch. Everyone shits their pants and it's not okay a-and Blizzard shouldn't be allowed to get away with this!!
>neo/v/ cant find anything bad to say about the game so it picks the optional microtransactions that you can earn for free or buy with ingame money anyway
kek
>>340359424
Do you seriously think they're going to go "Heh fuck it lets make this one hero cost money to unlock and completely fuck up the design of our game heh. We iz evul".
I can guarantee all heroes will be free.
>>340359694
Yes, there's 5 of them as OP's pic clearly shows
>>340357605
because they promised all future characters and maps would be free. thats why its okay to fund the project in this manner.
>>340359763
Why the fuck do you think people make fun of paid cosmetics by calling them "hats"? This shit has been hated since TF2, don't be stupid.
>>340359832
lol, thats just different AMOUNTS of the same box bud
>>340359832

>>340359668
>irrefutable
>"having loot boxes like this in a buy to play game isn't acceptable"
Why? He never says why.
This is his opinion, and even if it's an opinion I agree withit's still an opinion. It's not an actual argument. You can completely refute that as an argument by saying "I disagree"
>>340359741
Half, not 20%
>>340359424
No, it can't, you retarded fucking mongoloid. One of the lead designers said it would not be fair for someone, at any time, to own a hero that someone else may not have access to.

Christ.
Retards gon tard.
>>340359565
It does. This is a predatory business model which has no place in B2P games. I should not be forced to handle the heat in the first place, get it through your thick skull Blizzdrone.
>>340359684
If your only argument in favor of predatory microtransactions is "don't play it lol", then you really have no argument at all.
>>340359891
Splatoon offered all of its weapons and Maps updates for free for the last year and it didn't need microtransactions of any kind, and considering that Overwatch's sales are in the millions, your argument holds no weight and is merely a PR excuse.
>>340359961
200 credits back for a legendary dupe.
>>340360032
>predatory business model
Good Lord you're actually pathetic if you think cosmetic induced envy is a "predatory" model.
And you're not forced to handle the heat because you can choose NOT TO BUY THE GAME.
>>340360032
If your only argument against predatory microtransactions is "I personally dislike it so it's bad" then you really have no argument at all
I'm glad the Stillborn defense force is still trying to smear Overwatch because of the cosmetic cases that don't affect a single thing.
>>340359424
Are people really saying this, this is an incredibly retarded idea to use crates to unlock heroes.
>gamers defend microtransactions in full priced games
can they go any lower?
>>340359906
Actually, i think the main issue with the hats in TF2 was how out of place then are in the game world. Some of that crap really stands out like a sore thumb.
Same thing in CS:GO or any other FPS with weapon skins.
From what i've seen in Overwatch, the skins are ussualy pretty much in sync with the overall tone of the game.
>>340357605
I don't understand why people complain about it. Buying Pokemon or MtG cards has rng in it.
>>340359976
>One of the lead designers said it would not be fair for someone, at any time, to own a hero that someone else may not have access to.
But you have access to it. You just have to play to get it. This is literally the same argument every overwatchfag is using, that you have access to all content in game because you can earn it for free.
>>340360181
How does Blizzard's dick taste?
Dota and CSGO have been doing this (CSGO still costs money btw) and I have always viewed this model as the best for competitive games. It's purely cosmetic and low entry cost. It helps keep the game that you love maintained (as far as servers, etc) and provides income for new content for the game. Dota 2 came out 5 years ago and is more popular now than it was back then. That's a huge accomplishment for any video game.
>>340359906
>Never seen a whining thread like this about TF crates
>Or CS:GO crates
>have actually seen multiple threads of people showing off their decked out TF2 character loadouts
>>340360238
ye 40 dollars is full priced
>>340360295
Becasue they've already dropped $40/60 to play the actual game, something you don't need to do with either of your examples.
>>340360375
Then I don't think you've been around very long. People who bitched lose interest over time, and only the people who buy into cosmetics start posting. It will happen with Overwatch too.
>>340360312
Cosmetics are not the same as content and no one is denying that buying boxes gets you access to cosmetics faster, so if heroes or maps were released in crates then those who paid for them would have an advantage.
Cosmetics don't confer an advantage, whether you pay for them or play for them, but quicker access to heroes or maps certainly does.
>>340360426
>something you don't need to do with either of your examples
Yes you do. You can't play a game of pokemon or magick with a single booster pack.
>>340360392
Full priced for a F2P format
I feel like the loot crate microtransactions are a remnant from when it was Titan, that and the currency system, both combined with how leveling works for loot crates just make both of those seem extremely redundant.
Really though, they should have scrapped the currency and microtransactions and tied all unlocks to achievements, and then loot crates just being a way to slowly unlock everything passively as you level if you can't git gud or do some extremely arbitrary thing with a hero
>>340360151
It is, because it preys on psychology of players. And considering that people buy it in droves just furthers to prove my argument. People easily fall prey to it without even understanding what psychological tricks led them to it.
>And you're not forced to handle the heat because you can choose NOT TO BUY THE GAME.
Yes. But it doesn't make my criticisms of the game invalid.
>>340360179
But "i personally dislike it" is not my argument. I said that it's a predatory business practice which has no place in paid-for games. Nice strawman.
>>340360552
Yes you can, just go on the internet and print out a board on paper.
>>340360312

>>340360540
>player models is not content
You are this retarded.
>Cosmetics don't confer an advantage
They don't. But it's still a withheld content. Not to mention that company has every incentive to release a bad default skin in favor of making cosmetics more desirable.
So many Blizzard fans have Activisions cocks so far up their thoats to see that Overwatch IS a Free To Play game, just converted at the last minute to make it seem like its not for maximizing profits and the fact that these loot boxes exist is the very evidence to that claim.
If the game had a free version where you had 4-6 characters on rotation while being able to purchase single characters, or pay $40 for the All Characters Pass, then you essentially have a game with the EXACT business model that Smite has.
>>340360573
>which has no place in paid-for games
Why? Because you said so? 7 million people disagree. The devs of the fucking game disagree.
>>340360767
Not every game has microtransactions. Apply yourself.
>>340360879
No, because you still have to pay $40-60 to get the game in the first place.
I hope you enjoy never getting that skin you want! Better buy a new crate for another chance! It's not like they can just let you buy the skin, no you gotta gamble for it! That's how you make the big bucks!
You people sicken me.
>>340360573
What the fuck in marketing or anything that has to do with money not about psychology, it's been in human nature and nature since the beginning of time.
I have a problem with this microtransaction system as it reminds me of the one in the Plants vs zombies garden warfare.
Still like that PVZ
From where I stand this is what I hear when people say "this is only cosmetics, so it doesn't matter."
a) It doesn't matter to *me*. That it matters to others is irrelevant.
b) I don't care that the practice is predatory, as long I'm not the victim, and as long as I can profit from it.
That second one is especially important since people will tell you that the influx of money is necessary for continued development of the game, and to prevent the segmentation that would happen with DLC packs.
But then those are not the only two possible payment schemes. A subscription based model could have been adopted. With fairer practices across the board for it. But then everyone would have to pay. Not just the segment of people for whom cosmetics matters and who are susceptible to the predatory skinner box practices.
>>340360986
Name a team based game in the past half decade that does not have a form of micro transactions.
>>340360986
So only microtransactions are predatory? Why? Because you want them?
Is DLC predatory? Because you want it?
Why aren't games predatory in general? The developers want you to buy them, and in droves. Hell, they do research on what gets players addicted to playing their games. Why isn't that predatory?
>>340360614

>predatory
You are seriously pathetic.
Remember when people used to get mad about on-disc dlc? Now people want it.
>>340359424
They explicitly said they didn't want to split the player base at all. Missing skins doesn't split a player base, but missing characters and especially maps does. They said they want to just give them out. It makes sense to do that as well, as it means a whole slew of new things to get in a crate. But I'm sure they'll just not support their cash cow because "muh blizzdrone"

If you're mad about this, you're a spergy autist trying to validate your jealousy and if you feel an obligation to buy them you have a gambling problem. That's literally all there is to it. Save your autism in case Blizzard actually starts using loot boxes for things that are actually useful.

>>340358758
Only a problem if you have an incredibly weak will or are just plain retarded. The game doesn't force or even encourage you to buy boxes; the option is muted and shuffled to a corner instead of plastered everywhere.
Game doesn't even present a heavy drought of loot crates early on; at level25 the exp requirement goes static and every 3-4 games gets you a crate from that point on. You'd have to be supremely impatient to buy boxes.
>>340362071
>cashing in on idiots doesn't hurt anyone

Literally who cares. You get the crates free in game and it's just stupid cosmetic shit anyway. I've never payed for a single crate and I got 4 legendaries out of packs. Currently about level 28/29.
Why are you so mad that the game provides the option to buy the cosmetics with real money? In street fighter 4 there was no way to get cosmetics without paying real money. Surely this model is preferable to you.
And again, it's just some dumb cosmetic shit - who even cares. I don't even bother to equip most of the stuff I get out of crates.

The "market" is not, ultimately, the indisputable compass of a social body. Or else we would have free drug and companies would be allowed to pollute as much as they want as long as they make money out of it.
Identifying invisible, hidden costs and making sure they are accounted for and as much as possible regulated is one of the reasons why we have government bodies.
Now, maybe the situation at hand doesn't need that, but that won't be because "as long as people pay, then it's fine".
Hell, in case you hadn't noticed "voting with your wallet" is an asymmetric process and making it the scale by which you evaluate everything will lead you to a plutocratic society at best. Which I can't see as anything desirable myself.

Add to that that the point of contention happens to be that the very process of eliciting payment in our situation is predatory in nature and specifically tailored to make people with certain psychological profiles pay in spite of themselves, and I think you can see why your proposition is woefully insufficient to address the situation.

There is a low probability of getting things you want for free or even paying a small amount. Even the pallet swaps take a sever hours of grinding to buy. In older games, you would typically have a defined unlock criteria. Even games with random drops you at least know what enemy you should be grinding to get a low rate drop.
>>340363304
The would likely not design it in a way where most people will never unlock anywhere near everything. It would be pointless. The only reason to do it like this other than money is to satisfy people who enjoy having rare things just because they are rare.
This is actually a completely separate problem. The default skins in Overwatch are almost all better than the unlocks. After a few weeks, we will likely never see them again because everyone will want to use their rare drops.

>Saying we could have got it for free without having to grind if the cash shop didn't exist is a completely baseless assumption to make.

If I define finishing Overwatch as getting a single skin that I want, it may or may not take significantly longer than the average game. If it didn't matter then they wouldn't put a price tag on it.
>>340365168
Well... that was unexpected.
>>340365491
The world has gone fucking crazy right?
>>340365476
It doesn't matter mechanically from a gameplay perspective. It doesn't matter in any way. It has no effect on anything other than your epeen.
>>340365476
It matters to some people. It doesn't matter to me, and I can't be made mad about it because other people are.
>>340365402
Yes. Because I don't trust any company to make leveling good if I can buy my way out of it. Just like I don't trust Blizzard on current issue.
>>340365379
Are you retarded? The purpose of a business is to make as much money as possible. Overwatch is a product designed to make money. If people didn't like paying for crates, then blizzard wouldn't make money. It's all about optimising what you can get away with charging for. Just because some salty faggot on the Internet is mad he can't get his favourite skin, do you really think that blizzard is going to forgo making a bajillion dollars off people who don't mind paying a couple of bucks for some random cosmetics every now and then?
It's pretty bad, honestly. I don't like it. If I had any control at all over what characters I got items for, etc, then I wouldn't mind, but since it's just completely random and there's so much shit I don't want, it's just annoying. It's also fucking ridiculous how tiny the amount of credits you get is. I feel like I can't spend that shit because you get so little of it. You should get at least fucking 10 or so per game, like, shit.
It's stupid and I hate it, but it also really affects nothing. Besides, you barely see your character anyways, who gives a shit about these skins?
>>340357605
Each level up gives you one for free, everything is cosmetic and doesn't affect gameplay at all or gives any advantage over other players. They sell them for people who want a cosmetic quicker, but even then it's random. There's nothing wrong with it if you can unlock it yourself by playing.
>>340365578
But then why couldn't it have that content been sold, instead of put behind a bingo payroll?
>>340365578
It does matter. Psychology, enjoyment, desire. All important aspects. You may deny that those do not affect you, but you'd be lying.
>>340357605
Because people who play shitty games like overwatch literally cannot stop sucking cock.
>>340365324
>>340365350
in overwatch, you get 4 items at random, and currency is one of those. and it's a paltry sum at that.
unlike in other games, there is no way you can work hard to get the skin/emote/spray/pose that you want. you have to rely solely on the depth of your pockets or the favor of the random number generator.
>>340365832
Literal psychology masters student here and you're a huge faggot. Just letting you know.
I'm able to unlock all that shit ez and its cosmetics
>>340365978
i'm so sorry
>>340365832
>projecting this hard
Is it seriously this difficult for you to understand that some people just don't care about cosmetics?
I don't give a shit if your character is solid gold if you play like a retard. I get more enjoyment from a solid team and good opponents than different coloration.
>>340357605
They aren't because
It's not forced
Cosmetics only
Free maps and heroes
Can earn in game money slowly to buy something specific.
If there's no avoiding MCs in modern games, this is the best possible version of it.
>>340365978
I'm a psychology professor and you have no idea what you're talking about
>>340366051
don't apologize he's an idiot
>>340366117
It's the exact opposite, actually. This is the worst possible option because dumb fucks like yourself will actually support and justify it.
>>340365274
it's still pretty fun solo, but it also can become tiresome cus you end up feeling like you gotta fill roles instead of playing who you want where in a party you usually can pick whoever you are really good at or whoever you want to try out and other people will fill in the other roles. Another advantage though is you are constantly able to switch heroes which makes having to have a great team comp at first not as important as other games.
In solo most of the time it's just a sense of working together and it either clicks or it doesn't, and many game feel like stomps one way or the other. Many are also settled in overtime which can be very exciting and absolutely infuriating.
If you want a new multiplayer game it's pretty great.
>>340358827
>>340363934
>>340365207
But if the only reason you're playing the game is because you want cosmetics (in a fucking FIRST PERSON shooter) and not because you like the gameplay, doesn't that make YOU retarded?
>>340365832
I saw that "buy now" button when opening my first loot box, thought it was disgusting and never looked at it further.
The levelling system does a good enough job of exploiting that psychological shit on its own, and makes me feel like I've actually been rewarded. Something that I can't imagine buying a box would do.
There's no way to defend this.
I refuse to buy any. Getting one per level is enough anyway.
What's truly inexcusable is the fact that the skins are basically color swaps, and that loot boxes are the only way to get anything.
>>340366458
that's not entirely true, there are (at least) 3 unique models for the 10 skins per character.
I think some of the characters have pre-order only skins or something
>>340366301
If it means free dlc and everything can be earned in game without paying a buck, yeah.
>>340366859
there better be free DLC. there is only one unique game mode (standing on an objective that's either moving/standing still is one game mode), and a handful of maps.
>>340366098
And is it that diffcult to understand that time and money spent on developing cosmetics would be better spent on making the game better? Is it that difficult to understand that when cosmetics make you more money than the game sales itself then companies priorities are now to sell cosmetics and not to make a good game?
People like you can't see past their own nose and then you'll come and complain why gaming is so shit nowadays.
Everyone shut the fuck up Hiro is here. Look natural.
I don't understand why people are offended.
If dollar slot machines existed that rewarded halloween costumes and spray paint stensils, would you be tempted to pull the lever? I sure as hell wouldn't. But I understand that some people would be, and I wouldn't try and stop them. It's their life, it's their money, it's their self control. It's not my concern.
I don't see how this is any different from something dumb like that.
>>340361032
>>340364795
honestly, I am happy that it is random. if the game just gave you currency to buy skins, every one would have legendaries. every player would have the rare victory animations and it wouldn't be cool anymore. this way it feels special to get that legendary costume.
>>340365952
>there is no way you can work hard to get the skin/emote/spray/pose that you want
you can save up the coins and buy them. It takes a while but by level 50 you will have enough to buy a legendary skin as well as a few emotes/sprays/poses and in the meantime will have unlocked other legendary skins as well as other things.
It will take a very very long time to get everything though, in fact it might be impossible without buying a lot of crates. If you are a completionist the game will be a grinding nightmare (items can repeat and you just get a 10 percent refund on them) but if you can settle with having just a few legendaries (one for your main and the rest that you got from chests) it's perfectly doable without buying a shit ton of chests.
>>340366301
You can justify something without supporting it
>>340367301
>this way it feels special to get that legendary costume.
Not when you can spend a few hundred bucks.
>>340362894
you get loot boxes every time you level up, and leveling up is quite fast in overwatch, ive gotten something like 9 legendary skins and im level 43
>>340357605
For every one person (like myself) who is against this, 5 people are supportive of it, buy it, and refute your logic with their retarded opinions.
Remember, it's okay when blizzard does it.
Already spent $30 and will spend more.
I kind of understand why people dont like them but i have no issue with it.
>>340366383
You misrepresenting the case. Those people *want* to play the game. But they *also* want the cosmetics.
Now the cosmetics have been put behind a payment scheme that is tailored a skinner box with randomized results, that is structure specifically built to make people pay for those cosmetics they want in spite of themselves... with no guaranty they will have what they want, making further payment likely until satified or completely disgusted by the outcome.
Those practices are predatory in nature. Other payment schemes could have chosen: direct ale of the cosmetics. Subsciption model. Both would have been fairer.
The money gathered is supposedly meant to support for new maps while preventing the fragmentation of the community that DLC schemes create.
What this tells us first is that: the market value of the created content is either worth far less than its creation value, or Blizzard wants to abuse the people who pay by making them pay more than the actual complete value while they only want a fraction of it.
The part of the community that does not pay has no problem sanctioning those practices as long as it allows them to get their maps for free.
>>340358758
If you don't want to play the game, why would you want cosmetics anyway?
You sound like an American, desperately ignorant, illogical and deeply proud of your own stupidity.
>>340365207
They have to have some form of revenue coming in if they're going to develop new maps/heroes for free. If it were any other developer this kind of model wouldn't sustain them but since it's Blizzard they have the benefit of having it work.

I feel like people who buy these are supreme idiots.
You get one free loot crate every time you level up. You get one of these for free roughly every hour you play.
People who buy them are just impatient.
Having things to unlock makes me feel like I'm working towards something. Buying loot boxes is just paying to unlock things you'd get eventually anyway if you kept playing.
>>340368237
I don't like Steam Cards either. And certainly think the EU is going to need to do some legislation on the matter sooner than later on those gambling scheme that don't get taxed and regulated as such.
In the specific case of Steam cards, this is a meta market. The games themselves are left intact. You don't pay for a game to then be exposed to a gambling scheme. The survival of the games is not made co-dependent on the success of the scheme.Which I think makes a significant difference.

Pandora's Box has already been opened, OP.
People have consistently proven they will give a company money to not have to play a video game that they purchased.
This is going to poison video games beyond repair for the foreseeable future. It won't even start to get better until every one of these mother fuckers gives up video games or cuts this shit out. There's nothing any of us can do about it as long as we share the same hobby as people who have more money than patience.

>>340369608
Why should I care how someone else is choosing to spend their money?
>>340368450
that's just untrue, the act of being able to trade and sell cases and drops on the market makes cs go the more consumer friendly. you might say it's more jewy since they get a cut of the market transactions but i'd still prefer valves system vastly.
>>340357605
>Why people are okay with this
I don't understand it either.
Overwatch is a dead game, thanks to the Cash Shop. No virtual skin is worth anything
>>340357605
Because consumers have free will and they should be allowed to make their own choices.
>>340369549
I'm not talking just about Overwatch. Videogames as a whole have gone down hill in regards to DLC and are continuing to get worse. You don't get to personally draw the line. The line is drawn by the consumer base as a whole and that line is a downward slope.
>>340369608
>you don't care as long as *you* don't pay
more like I don't care if stupid people *do* pay, because if the map packs weren't free, I wouldn't buy them. But as it stands now I'm getting a free ride from retards that bought a digital hat. Which in my opinion is pretty fuckin sweet.

>>340358696
>thinks all the new map and heroes will be free
Guess what? Skins are "free" too.
>>340369479
You can't easily unlock things in Overwatch. My argument is that older games has set criteria for unlocks. If you wanted to unlock something, you did whatever task you needed to do to unlock it. Having to grind to level 200 is not the same thing (Realistically probably 90 with coins based on my current rate, but that is still for a single skin).
pros
>extra revenue could lead to supporting the game longer
>all extra characters and maps are free

>>340370449

>>340370996
Other consumers aren't the only way an entertainment company makes money, no. But they are the primary means of making that money. Such a company wouldn't exist for very long if consumers weren't buying from them.

>You can't easily unlock things in Overwatch.
You really can.
>Having to grind to level 200 is not the same thing (Realistically probably 90 with coins based on my current rate, but that is still for a single skin).
Try, like, 30, if there's a skin your dick's particularly hard for. It's literally the diablo model. You get random shit, but if you play for a bit you can easily trade for whatever you want. I get that you like achievements better than this system, but it's really not worth getting wound up over.

>this is "abuse" according to /v/
>>340370567
yea that adds value to them which im fine with and yea the two step shit is annoying but again i like it better because its a system where if i get something i dont want or if i want to i can sell an item and either work my way up to a better skin or a new game as opposed to overwatches system. take for example if you buy 1 case in both games, if you get a really lucky in overwatch you got a really nice skin but if you get one in cs go you can sell it and buy a new game or a bunch of skins.
DLC practices are a plague on the industry. We tried it and now we've realized it has only ruined games rather than help them. DLC should be banned unless it gives a quantifiable new addition to the game equal to that of a sequel of sorts.
Cosmetics is still content. No Mercy is a good example of this. You had to unlock cosmetics in game by earning money and playing through the various modes in the game. Now companies have regulated that to purchasing instead. So to get that secret character or move or cosmetic, you have to shell out cash. They took advantage that 'cosmetics arent important" mindset most consumers have cause they think it doesnt affect gameplay, but what am I going to do when I really want that American flag shirt for my custom character and the only way to get it is to shell out a few bucks. This works wonders, too, cause it artifically inflates the lifetime price of the game. So what you paid 60 for becomes 80 and higher.
Microtransactions was a mistake and it's a shame that the industry is ruined by those who enable it, aka those who aren't educated enough or have enough willpower to stop themselves from paying another $1 for that special item.

I'm already 27 and the things I would want are still a long way off based on luck or coins. This is even considering I am not a fan of the 1000 coin skins for most of the characters I like to use. You can get things easy, but you can't get specific things you want easily.

Just read this thread.
There are people, posting right now on /v/, that defend this shit. They're all for shortcuts in video games, they don't like difficulty, they don't give a shit about their parents' money. People that jumped on the video game train during mid-90's and early 00's - they don't understand how the industry works and how their "it doesn't affect me so why should I care" attitude is encouraging publishers to come up with shitty ideas like Day 1 DLCs and distribution exclusive content.
This is the state we're in.
We're fucked.
Because it takes 3 or so games of about 5 minutes each to get a box.
So any of the lower boxes aren't worth it.
If you buy 50 boxes, you're a fucking retard who just spent $50 on cosmetics you earn by playing.
If there wasn't a coin system that let you choose which specific skins you want for free, then it would be bullshit.
But there is a coin system, and furthermore the cash shop is hidden pretty well instead of advertised all over the launch screen.

Happens. Preceded by the word opinionated.
That being said, coming from a piece of shit like you (*you* certainly aren't a cunt, you have neither the depth, nor the pleasure-giving that would make you deserving of the name) that didn't extend the courtesy of trying to understand my position, and totally misrepresented my argument? I'll take that as a compliment
>>340373261
>coin system
Nigga you have a chance to get coins. That makes it even worse.
>>340373260
>Shortcuts in videogames
You do realize that everything is cosmetic, right?
I'm not a fan of the buying loot shit but its not like its P2W. Its fucking skins and voice lines and tags.
>>340373281
Being a freshman isn't a position. It's a condition. The good news is that you'll likely grow out of it.
>>340373369
yeah but you can get up to 250 from any box and you get them if you happen to get duplicates.
It takes a long ass time to get legenedaries (that you want, they drop like crazy for classes you don't play) but "that one legendary skin" is pretty much all there is to work towards.
So just have fun playing the actual game.
>>340373210
Then the whole world must be autistic including you. Cosmetics defines you. Or did you think that getting your favorite colored shirt or shoes is considered optional too?
>>340373413
Do you understand how much a cosmetic can motivate someone to grind in a game? The motivation is gone the moment you let other people with more money just buy it.
what's there to be upset about? it's just a faster way for people with more money than patience to get pretty costumes which have no affect on gameplay
>>340373042
>buy the game
>BOOOHOOO YOU'RE A POORFAG
Are you retarded, anon?
>>340373445
Whereas being an idiot is for life. You'll never outgrow it.
>>340373553
since when are material objects only digital?
It's a first person game, it's not like i see my skin outside of replays

It's cosmetics you nerd.
>>340373538
It took me ten boxes to get 50 coins. 50 fucking coins. 1000 / 50 = 200. If I get an average of 50 coins per ten boxes...it would take me over 2000 boxes to get enough for one 1K skin. This is assuming I give no money to Blizzard.
>>340373413
The entirety of Guild Wars 1 end-game content was cosmetics. People will go to insane length to get good-looking items.
>>340373561
>Do you understand how much a cosmetic can motivate someone to grind in a game?
And this is a good thing because...?
>>340373692
You're saying that it's bad that people want cosmetics and yet forgetting that every person wants to make their own identity in any game. Choosing your in game icon is an example of cosmetics.
Actually I hate the world cosmetics. let's call it customization options so you can be redpilled to see what it really means.
>>340373782
You're a retard. I'm done with talking to you.
>>340373751
>If I get an average of 50 coins per ten boxes...it would take me over 2000 boxes to get enough for one 1K skin.
Then it's a good thing the average is much higher than that.
>>340373561
Lol, first you were whining about this being a shortcut for people that don't like difficulty. Now it's about motivation for fucking cosmetics. You're such a moron.
>>340373751
>it would take me over 2000 boxes to get enough for one 1K skin
it took me up until level 35 to save up 710 coins.
35 boxes because 1 box per level.
You could argue I'm lucky, but I know people who were able to buy a 1000 skin by an even lower level.
You're only level 10, they would need to drop 100 coins per box guaranteed for you to have enough by that stage, basically you see the cool kids running around in their gay skins and you're now frustrated by it.
Basically MMORPG syndrome.
>>340373261
>If you buy 50 boxes, you're a fucking retard who just spent $50 on cosmetics you earn by playing.
But I don't have the time to grind all 50 boxes if I play on weekends only, it would take a couple of months.
Instead, I could trade a few hours of work to purchase 50 lootboxes, and I have more skins than you in the first month.
>>340358431
Except that what you receive from a csgo case is actually worth something - ie you can put it back on the market. Where is the in-game economy in Overwatch? Can you buy and re-sell the contents of these, or are you literally flushing your money away on pixels?
>>340374094
No. You're retarded. Spending money on things you want is retarded. Retard.
>>340373941
The average is not higher than that. Here's what happens: the coins you get from duplicates, assuming you luckout and get a duplicate, are less than 10 coins. The more items you get, the more chance you get at getting a cash out of duplication coins. This is where it becomes fun for Blizzard. Not only are there over a hundre different things to get, sprays are also delegated to each character specifically. Normally, you would think Blizz would just make it so sprays are universal, but they don't. That's the beauty of it: it's all just filler to make getting content harder.
I mean I dont know why you cant understand this, but I guess it makes sense since it's meant to work off you guys being ignorant.
>create a scarcity
>create an option to get said content
>fake "free items" by making it harder to obtain said items and increasing the time it takes to get said content
>work psychology on the player's impatience to make them shell out money for the boxes
And guess what? It worked. Blizz likely made bank on the first day.
>>340374216
>Can you buy and re-sell the contents of these, or are you literally flushing your money away on pixels?
No, but then again I don't really feel the need to manage nerd paraphernalia for chump change. How's your Amiibo collection going?
>>340373861
>every person wants to make their own identity in any game.
what, no.
it's a shitty team game where you play with randoms going to a point and pressing Q to be the cool guy for 5 seconds.
Why the fuck would you want to "create an identity"?
Are you autistic?
How does unlocking the same skin 2 people in the same match already have somehow creating an identity?
>redpilled
it's like you want yourself to look retarded.
>>340374058
It is luck. That's the fucking point of any rng mechanic. It's not even frustration. it's that microtransactions are shit.
>>340374308
>The average is not higher than that.
Factually wrong.
>the coins you get from duplicates, assuming you luckout and get a duplicate, are less than 10 coins.
I bet you're going to feel super silly when you learn that there are different coin rewards at different loot tiers.
>>340374360
>what, no.
Yes. Every game you will always run into people with different icons and wearing different skins and having different emotes equipped. It's a statistical fact and human nature. Face it, you're a gullible goyim and activision fucked you in the ass.
>>340358431

>>340374571

>developer charges 40-60$ for the game AND puts microtransactions in it
>"guys, i swear it's ok to be a greedy jew and not have everything in the game after you bought it!"
>>340374423
microtransactions don't actually immediately unlock what you want though, they just give you more drops.
You said it would take 2000 boxes to get the 1k skin.
But if that was the case, even spending $50 would not get you what you want.
50 boxes is a lot less than 2000.
People who are faglords and bought 50 boxes have said it gives you well more than what you need to buy any skin.
Now this is still RNG, but there's a drop rate and we can assume 50 boxes will get you about 1000 coins as it took me to level 35 to get 710 coins.
Let's assume you're unlucky, it might take you to level 60 to get 1000 coins ready.
That's a shitload less than 2000.
>>340374568
>people have different icons that means they have crafted an identity for themselves and this is really important to the game
you really just hate the idea of playing games for fun, huh?
>>340374948
Customizing my character to run around Saint Row with a dildo weapon is fun.
>>340374659
Well, then I guess you're stupid instead of ignorant. The average coin payout is probably about 20-40 per box, more as you accumulate more shit to duplicate. But I guess the fact that you didn't get super lucky with ten random picks means you know more than the rest of the community.
>>340374713
>and not have everything in the game after you bought it!
so you want to have every skin unlocked from the beginning?
Just admit you want to play dressup and don't actually care about playing the game itself.
>>340373751
Your math is wrong. 1000 / 50 is 20, so it would take you 200 assuming you got 50 coins per 10 boxes.
However, each box is guaranteed to be at worst 3 whites and a blue. This earns you 25 coins if each one is a duplicate, meaning you could get a 1k skin in 40 levels if you had the absolute worst drop rates known to man.
Luckily purples and golds aren't too rare. From experience, golds seem to be at a 3-5% drop rate per chest while purples are a good deal more common.
>>340375064
>oh no you didnt get lucky thats a shame
>just cause you didnt get it doesnt mean it's not a bad thing
The ole self anecdote clause, the lifeblood of corporate shills
>>340357605
Because when done right, they are the best option.
Take a look at Mass Effect 3, the multiplayer was pretty much tacked on, but thanks to the funding of microtransactions it prospered, receiving five, well varied expansions.
Overwatch does one better, any maps will be free, and the price is having to rely on RNG for meaningless cosmetics. The microtransactions don't affect the gameplay in any meaningful way.
Publishers are going to demand profits no matter what, when the choice is between map packs that fracture the playerbase, and microtransactions that trigger idiots, I know what the preferred choice is.
>>340375085
>Just admit you want to play dressup

>>340374793
I bought a 50 at just over level ten and wound up over 2k. I'm guessing that 30 boxes is usually enough to garner the currency to buy a single high priced skin with some level of variation.
>>340375251
You started this whole conversation with an anecdote with a demonstrably smaller sample size than any of us have. Dumbass.
>>340375117
>Your math is wrong. 1000 / 50 is 20
I accidentally used the wrong mental trick when I'm doing math by removing the one zero from 5 and not removing just 1 from the 1000 either. I ended up removing two and using 10/5 to come up with 200. What the fuck is wrong with me. I was the best at math. I'm so fucking rusty.

You know I was just thinking about this recently, arnt random loot boxes the same as gambling, like a slot machine?
>>340375581
it used to be you'd buy a game and then unlock shit with your time.
In MGR:R you buy the game and then earn currency by playing to buy skins for Raiden.
In Overwatch you also have to put in time to get currency to buy skins.
The difference is that fags who can't wait can also pay up front for more drops and therefore more currency.
This is not the same as "not have everything in the game after you bought it!", that would be if you could not unlock the skins without paying money for them.
But what's actually happening is that people are buying complete save files of MGR:R so they can play with the skin they want as soon as possible.
They're paying to play a game less, making them absolute retards.
But the good news is you can play MGR:R and Overwatch and get everything without paying to not play the game.
>>340365207
>even CoD gives you cosmetic items for free
Yes but do they give all upcoming gameplay content like maps/gamemodes for free? No they don't. I prefer its just cosmetics, which you can also get for free since you get a box everytime you level up and the cap is infinite.
>>340376093
The line is blurred because you still get something back, but it's technically no different from a chance machine since you the item the player wants is only controllable by chance. This gets bad when the chance to get said item is entirely controlled by the developer.
if this was brought up in court, Activision would easily use the defense that all items are considered valuable and is only subjective based on each person's tastes. However, because the game actively creates item tiers, this puts this into question the liability of "equal items" and as a result, a prosecutor can claim artificial valuing, which gets closer to that of slot machine.
>>340376043
>Get a job
It's a fucking hobby or pastime, an hour a night money on the side as a small supplement to my income. Ez while it lasts, while it is still unregulated.
>>340376148
>They're paying to play a game less, making them absolute retards.
You forget that enjoyment of a game comes in many flavors. People have been dressing themselves up in different skins for ages in video games. Hell, there was heated debates about which tunic and shield to wear with Link in Ocarina of Time, but of course this is only know to people who aren't millennials
>>340376148
So crates are forcing me to put more time in this game? Cool idea
I know a lot of MMO that have this system, where you have to grind to buy premium stuff from the shop. The only problem, that you don't pay THE FULL FUCKING PRICE for this kind of games.
>>340361819
I think this is where the significant difference between Valve boxes and Overwatch boxes exist: in Valve boxes, there's always a chance of getting something very rare, and something that will stand out obviously amidst everyone else. With Overwatch...you get skins that everyone can just get.
There's no individuality, nothing special, nothing that is really like "wow, I can actually get something amazing in these." Overwatch is like playing a virtual slot machine at the local dive bar - you pay the same amount as the regular slot machine, but with smaller regular payouts, less fanfare, and without the potential of a huge payout from a regular slot machine in a casino.
>>340359291
Multiplayer games are always an excuse to have a game with no content.
No need for AI, no need for a story, no need for cinematics or level design, little needed in the way of voice actors. Churn out a barebones turd, pay the cost of some servers and you're set.
>>340376497
