Persona 2 was the peak of Persona games. All they are now is wacky waifu simulators with zero depth. Persona 1 and 2 explored unique themes and had enjoyable characters without needing retarded social links.

3's combat system and dungeon design required you to carefully manage your party, especially when grinding. While you could heal at the bottom floor, doing so also risked you losing your best party members for the night and poor management would leave them unavailable for days on end.
It was designed to limit your time in Tartarus for side quests and instill a sense of urgency, as well as a means of encouraging the usage of your full party: If Yukari, Mitsuru, and Junpei fuck off home sick, if you want to stay in Tartarus it's time to bring in the Koromaru, Akihiko, and Ken B-team if you want to push through to the next blockade in a single night.
Persona 4's design tried to mimic this sort of thing with limited SP, but with the abundance of SP items and other cheap tricks to get around it (especially the SOS in the P4G edition), they rendered the party management aspect entirely toothless.
