To be fair you are never supposed to see the landscape from this perspective. Even while on a flying mount the "fog" limits your vision greatly, even with the view distance on Ultra. But yeah, it looks like dog shit when you see it like this.

Every Pokemon is based on real life places. So what? New York doesn't have a desert slapped in the middle of it. The regions don't match up to their IRL counterparts, not like how that image implies.

Nobody claimed it was exact 1:1 replica. The map was just to show how the regions fit into their inspirations and general locations. Obviously they won't be exactly like their real life counterparts because that would be boring from a game design standpoint.

This is the full map. The island shapes are based on the real ones, but their relative sizes and positions aren't. It's a loose interpretation, not intended to be a precise replica of the real geography.
