Why doesn't Serious Sam have more metal music?

They could easily use a couple of more Undercode songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc166BcAlYg&ab_channel=42SpeeDevil42

Also Serious Sam thread.
>>
>>340303484
Because Serious Sam composer thinks percussion is more fitting for the frantic pace the game has.

You've already made the same thread like a week ago btw. Not that I'm complaining, /v/ isn't serious enough as it is.

Sam 4 and more SS games was confirmed couple weeks ago at NGC.

Talos Principle was born from the team's attempt to create more varied and innovative puzzles than "find key to door", for the quiet moments of SS4.

Thus, we can expect some Talos-lite style maps in SS4 !

We can expect Talos 2 instead of SS4.

Talos 2 was confirmed also, but Alen Ladavac literally stated that new Serious Sam's in works. Hell, it technically was being made right after #3, but Talos was accidentally born from the project, and it kinda distracted them.
>>
>>340304717
Just like Prey and DNF.
>>
>>340303935
Serious Sam 3 had a lot of great metal and percussion songs, so I'm hoping they kick it up a notch in SS4.
>>
>>340304954
I found SS3 soundtrack to be quite lacking, personally. It was fitting but many songs took a while to get going so you often didn't get to the good parts while playing, and metal soundtrack was almost exclusively in the multiplayer that had been dead on arrival with the exception of Hero in the credits.
>>
>>340305870
Yeah Hero was criminally under-utilised, considering how much they marketed it in the trailers.
>>
>>340303484
What's the type of metal Undercode plays anyway? I dislike metal generally but I'm willing to broaden my horizons.
>>
>>340307310
Serious Metal
>>
>>340307310
Heavy Metal, a bit of power and thrash in some songs.
>>
>>340303484
I think because they use metal only during the most serious battles, 'cause if you'll have it playing all the time you'll be very quickly tired of it. Percussions sound more subtle.
>>
>>340309130
Dunno about that, I listen to Undercode every day and never get tired of them.

On the other hand, if I have to hear that tomb music in BFE one more time I'm going to send a very angry letter to Mr. Mravunac
>>
>>340304954
Damjan said he's gonna use much heavier songs in SS4, in spirit of death and groove metal like 5FDP and so on. And I think he also mentioned using the help of Undercode and two other metal bands again.
>>
>>340309373
Having played all the Serious Sam games back to back recently I can say that Damjan definitely has some talent.

Say what you want about Serious Sam 2, but that game had a wide variety of good songs.
>>
>>340306781
I thought it was appropriate. Whenever you turned around to see a horde coming towards, hearing WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR made you go Serious.
>>
>>340309226
Have you heard the soundtrack Undercode's guitarist made for the game called Seum by the way? The demo came out yesterday. I'd say it's a pretty dope sound and I'd really like to hear that kind of music in SS4.

And what's wrong with that tomb music? I thought it was very fitting, pretty creepy, and the one playing in menu and Sirian chamber was the best in line with Hero.
>>
>>340309573
Couldn't agree more, Damjan always did his job right and made the music which was very fitting with all the game settings.
>>
>>340309605
But they only use the song like two times - once when kamikazes attack and once during the Major Biomechanoid fight. And while those were intense moments, I think it would have been better to use Hero during the second Warship fight or something.

>>340309651
Oh? I didn't know about that, can I find it on Youtube or anything?

The tomb music was fitting, I guess, but the tombs themselves felt so out of place in a Serious Sam game. I felt like I was Playing Doom 3 again.
>>
>>340309895
I think Hero lyrics after I read them because it's fucking impossible to decipher them otherwise were very fitting for the credits.
>>
>>340310178
Speaking of credits, I think this would have been pretty appropriate for TFE

I guess no, but I've ripped the songs yesterday and uploaded 'em to Dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m9te3i23bmb3pb3/AAAzVhpgeBuhE_0pBWfgpDhda?dl=0

Agree about the tombs tho, these dark places were fucking horrible. They could've used at least a bot more lightning sources, may be some power generator or something. On the other hand, I missed the night levels.

From Croteam itself:
http://www.croteam.com/serious-sam-4-cancelled/

That’s it, boys and girls, it’s done. We cancelled production of Serious Sam 4. No more Sam 4. Nada. Niente. Instead, we decided to go straight to Serious Sam 5.

Reasons, you might ask?

Well, we were so much under the pressure from our publisher, fans, friends, dentists, lawyers, neighbours and people we occasionally meet in elevator to deliver best Serious Sam game EVER, that we simply realized we couldn’t fill shoes that big and if we want to make a really good game, we need to let it go, and start from a scratch. Too bad, because story that Jonas and Verena wrote was so awesome, it took Sam to two European famous countries where he’s never been before…)

We do have one screenshot from abandoned SS4, but it had to be blurred for security reasons.

Serious Sam 5 will continue where never-released-and-prematurely-ended Serious Sam 4 left off, and it will showcase the power of new and improved Serious Engine 5, which can now render billions of square feet of sand with no noticeable dropout in frames per second.

Here are first three screenshots from the newly-started production of Serious Sam 5. This is the setting we are most comfortable with, we know how to do this properly.

I love this song, def my favorite out of their 1st album.

I wish Damjan would remake this old credits theme for some of the next games, as well as Grand Cathedral theme. He already did the Dunes remake, so GC would be the best thing coming.

However if you count Evilution and Plutonia Doomguy has a surprisingly high kill count, something like 25k.

The problem with BFE is that the fights aren't all that varied, and you'll have like 3 enemy types at most and the fights drag on for way too long.

Great Pyramid also had some single-enemy-type waves but those are way shorter and better paced. Grand Cathedral is a lot better with the enemy variety, I never thought "If I see another fucking pumpkinhead" or something like that.

I don't care what anyone says, I think Guardian of Time went on for too damn long.
>>
>>340313867
They said in one of the interviews that they really rushed with SS3 release thus had some problems with balancing abd improving the levels. It's clear that the last level of BFE was very quickly put together resulting with a bit overwhelming enemy count and wicked boss battle. If they had 3-4 month more, BFE would've so been much better. Fortunately, they won't ruch to some strict deadlines and holidays anymore with SS4.

>Why are there so few good devs left?
western plebeians seem to love to bend over for AAA publishers, who do nothing but "play it safe", AKA cash-in as much as possible, with cheapest possible products, that follow modern, proven "trends" , and appeal to lowest tier audiences.

Meanwhile the small group of ~20 guys in Croteam are literally a team, almost like a family, with everyone doing bit of everything, instead of the place being just a factory with faceless leaders. They're working out of passion and using their own ideas and own sources of inspiration, tend to create much more unique and enjoyable games.

Was already the case back in early 90's with ID Software, and Croteam kinda follows the style. Plus, they develop for PCs = less restrictions.

And it was great up until the very part you posted. Like four rooms into the first level and they've already just dumped a flat empty space as the arena.

What SS is lacking is some actual interactive environment. It doesn't have (excluding temp powerups here) jump pads or speed boosts or deflecting shields. Most of the arenas don't even have kill pits. The arenas are just so lacking in things to do so it's not wonder most people associate the game as just "lol backpedal and strafing, the game".

Easily the best level of the series was in SS1. Moon Mountain.

and they definitely succeeded at that.
Kids can't even imagine how impressive SS's large, open maps, without disgusting distance fog or weird invisible walls felt. Not to mention when they would suddenly be filled with dozens of enemies rushing and gunning towards you; this was still the time when having even half a dozen polygonal enemies on screen at once (without raping the fps) was amazing!

Serious Sam TFE and TSE are shooter in perfection. I mean that. Fight me. Every single but is perfect and plays off of each other. Enemy design, weapons design, environmental design, sound design, gameplay. Perfect. Also that somtimes more sometimes (way) less subtle humor in every part like the enemy spawn and secrets.

Croteam should take a cue from Painkiller. It had both great ambient and metal soundtrack, as well as impressive sound work. Serious Sam games always lacked that kind of environment sound design.

Call me a heretic but I think that Xbox version of SS is the best.

+ Some new levels which play more with gravity (sadly some parts from PC are cut)
+ More soundtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdsHN547UmE&index=1&list=PLE226DA142596E0F4
+ Better cuteness (bit more funny but not ss2 level crazy)
+ Better weapon models
+ I like some of the enemies models better
+ Nice sound when killing multiple enemies at once
+ TFE+TSE like it always meant to be

It is just more polished SS. I really wish that HD version would have been based on SS Xbox. Or at least they could port SS Xbox as SS Revolution for PC so everyone could be happy.
>>
>>340321004

This >>340320732 nigga pretty much summed my opinion. It's not about the music, but more about the sound design. It's a bit stale, especially considering the environment sound when all you hear is birds singing or wind howling all the time. And I'd prefer more metal music like Painkiller did as well.
>>
>>340320732

Every enemy has a unique idle, active and a triggering sound. Sound is directly part of the gameplay, more so than in any other shooter. It warns you about traps, tells you about enemy positions. Enemies shooting their projectiles also have a unique sound for every single type of enemy.

It plays a lot with sound, and you barely notice it because it's so well done.
>>
>>340321191
>+ Some new levels which play more with gravity (sadly some parts from PC are cut)
There wasn't any new levels in SS XBOX apart from a few DM maps and the first level taken from SS TSE PC demo IIRC. As for anything else I pretty much agree, Xbox was a very nice enhancement of the original games, except the humour was a still a bit over the top (tho as you mentioned, not that stupid as in SS2 yet).
>>
>>340320823
This. The weapons sounds in BFE (apart from AR, RL and lasergun) were really good, added the right impact when you shoot.

Console version ruined a lot. The dynamics of the gameplay were touched in ways they shouldn't have been. Like changing enemy hp with difficulty. That's one thing that always stayed the same, because important to the gameplay rythm. 5 rockets for a red biomech is important, because the game is about damage evasion and enemy prioritization. You shoot those 5 rockets and while they are still flying you turn towards the next enemy.

The most important core features of a good SS game are:

>every damage is completely avoidable
>every enemy has unique visuals and sounds; is therefore immediately recognizable
>enemies have a set amount of hp
>no superfluous weapons; every weapon useful in certain situations
>enemy attacks are always unique but easy to memorize
>enemies have to be prioritized to succeed
That just results in a kind of dance most shooters can't compete with. Avoiding damage by sidestepping, jumping, shooting down projectiles all whie scanning the arena for the highest priority enemy to kill and deciding with which weapon to kill it.

>>
>>340329095
Double shotty in BFE is way less reliable. Unless you have the shotty in their nose it won't kill a Kleer on serious.

May as well use rockets or the minigun later on. Least with rockets they put the infinite ammo boxes everywhere.
>>
>>340333490
Well even if it's half that, it's still 43 thousand enemies.
>>
>>340333784
You are the first person I've seen say that, I thought I was crazy because all anyone says is use the double for the kleer and it's okay. But it always felt like a terrible idea. I had the AR down pat for the extra range normally.
>>
>>340333490

Serious Sam on GBA seems so weird, is the game actually good? Kind of curious.

>>
>>340334118
AR is reliable but a huge ammo sink, you use somewhere around 25-30 bullets per Kleer. There's also fire rate to worry about, but that's offset by the ability to hitstun it.

Minigun is just straight up good since its so fast the advancing mob cannot get within 15 seconds of you. The issue is limited ammo sadly.

Rockets are top tier because unless a kleer is hugging you the splash damage is negligible. And if that's the case, you're dead anyway
>>
>>340334435
it's slightly more impressive Wolfenstein 3D, but very slow.

Cathedral King is pretty easy actually, only took me a couple of tries but I played the shit out of that level in the past.

Metropolis King the easiest of the bunch, once you're past the scarab collection it's a straight shot for the achievement.

Sam I Am I got thanks to Serious Saturdays events (being one of the best players in the old and new group helped) and going on some crazy TSE HD streak where I kept replaying the campaign again and again and saving less and less times, ultimately beating the entire game without making any quicksaves (autosaves were off the entire time) and ending a couple hundred kills short

>>340339914
Only really hard part are the Kleers and Khnums before the boss fight. The rest of the level is actually pretty easy, though if you die a lot you'll end up absolutely hating that open area halfway through the level, purely because it's a time consuming piss easy fight that slowly whittles down your health.

>>340340398
oh right, I think I forgot about bombs when I got there. Anyway, after you get out of the corridor, you run a lot to the ammo spawn, get the speed booties to run faster and hp and everything you want and run around the cathedral to the back wall. There is a nice spot to rocket jump, it will take you 3 shots leaving you with like 50 hp or something. You will definitely fail because wall is tricky, but it is possible. Then you just run forward, game teleports you to the boss, you kill him, the end.

>>340345582
In the HD version, they made the hitbox of the Kleer match the model. This made the hitbox smaller than the classic so they had to get closer if you want to 1-shot them.

Didn't matter for BFE, seeing that the Sledgehammer is better at killing them than the DS.
