Because the game was released the day before Tony Hawk's Activision contract expired. They gutted most of the game to meet the deadline.

I don't think there's ever been a game so rushed before that they had to start manufacturing before it was even in a releasable state.

Agreed, tons of more features than the first games and also a much better world than skate 3. Skate 3 was barely an upgrade and even a downgrade in some regards such as no true open world or party play features. Online was also better in 2.

Sony was offered on the condition of extending tonys contract. Of course Sony didn't want to out any actual money so they said no.

From interviews they tried to create a "skaters paradise". It was a really bad idea because it removed all the sense of exploration and also made the game feel a lot more unrealistic, like something you would see in a Tony Hawk hame game.
