the game was fun because it was built around the environments being a puzzle that you had to solve at speed. Linearity was an essential part of the game's design rather than being a flaw.
once you lose the ability to tightly design the path from A to B, the game is going to suffer.
Just look at MGSV. A stealth game isn't going to work as an open world game without a overwhelming amount of effort as you can't design proper sneaking paths if the player can just say "fuck it" and go somewhere else. You can have multiple paths to an objective, but they still follow a linear sequence.
This open world meme is ruining a lot of games. Only some of them actually suit that kind of design, but developers keep on forcing it into shit because it's the latest buzzword that casuals guy games on.

This. I fucking hate most open-world games. For many devs, open-world is just an excuse to pack in as much fluff and filler as possible while putting minimal effort into level design. MGSV was hugely negatively impacted by the switch to open-world, and now Mirror's Edge is the perfect posterboy for why open-world reduces the quality of certain games.
In my opinion, Far Cry 3 (and likely the first two as well, haven't gotten around to playing them) is a perfect example of open-world done correctly - it has actual level design in quests, but also combines the best aspects of open-world like random encounters, immersion, vehicles, and being able to approach a fortress from different angles. A game like Mirror's Edge simply doesn't benefit from open-world.
