Because he's the Ryu of Overwatch. He's there specifically to be the vanilla character and he's basically a CoD character.
He has a grenade, the ability to duck around the corner and heal, a normal gun, and the ability to sprint. Hell, his Ultimate, unlike a lot of the others, doesn't even really have a gimmick: It's just auto-aim.
He's designed specifically to be playable for people who've been playing Call of Duty.

I like him because he's almost a secondary support. Running 76 with a Zen on your team takes away the need for a mercy or lucio to pick up the healing slack. Granted it's only every 10 seconds or so, but think of it as Lucio's amp it up.

It gives you perfect accuracy at any range, regardless of recoil. So you can be a speck across the map and get gunned down in about a magazine. You can't replicate that without firing in bursts which cuts your dps in half. Furthermore, it cuts your reload speed in half, so you can deploy further sustained fire.
Also, nobody's good enough to replicate that accuracy even at close range.
Is 76 really that usefull in the grand scheme of things? Like it seems everything you would use him for, a more specialized Hero would do it better.

Is there any backstory to why Hanzo killed his brother (Genji) besides "I was ordered to/It was for the best"?
Because amongst all the spectacular heroes with amazing abilities and near superhero-tier powers you have a completely normal guy who is just a great soldier, he has an underdog vibe to him when you consider this, and people like rooting for the underdog.
Lore-wise, he is technically the leader of overwatch and his grizzled war veteran character type is appealing to a lot of people
gameplay-wise his basic skill set fits into any team comp, while he himself can dish out metric fucktons of damage, and once you start realizing how mobile he is with not just sprint but jumping with his rocket, he's 10/10.

Hanzo and Genji were both from the Shimada clan, a family of very powerful and deadly assassins, known for taking their targets out with traditional weapons of the Samurai (Bows and Katanas basically). They also had connections out of the wazoo to the Yakuza and potentially Talon.
Hanzo and Genji's dad was the head of the clan, and while both of them were skilled assassins Genji liked to fuck off at night and flaunt the family wealth, living a playboy lifestyle. This was a big no-no of course (unwanted attention) and Hanzo didn't care for it one bit, but their father always protected them.
The father either dies of old age, or steps down, either way he can't protect Genji anymore. The new leaders tells Hanzo that Genji's life style is an act of betrayal, that by bringing attention he could compromise the entire Shimada clan (which is partially true, he got the attention of Overwatch who reached out to him a few times, but Genji always told them to fuck off). They told Hanzo to talk sense into him, or deal with him. Dealing with him was about the last thing in the world Hanzo wanted to do, but he knew that refusing to do this would be his own "betrayal" to the clan, and would probably end with a cousin or something hunting him down.
Hanzo and Genji met at Hanamura alone. Words were said, tempers flared, swords were drawn and after a brief but intense sword fight, Genji was a bloody mess and Hanzo was holding the sword. Realizing he killed his own brother, and that he was forced to do so by his own clan, he threw down the sword, never touched one again and left the clan to go rogue.

As someone who plays mostly support (16 hours on Mercy 7 on Lucio) I love it when someone on my team is 76. Especially if they're half decent. They take some weight off my back with Biotic Field, giving themselves better longevity as well as helping heal others on the team (not really a problem for Lucio but every bit helps, lets me save my cooldown for more intense fighting). They're also damn good at peeling anyone who jumps me and can do some damn good cover fire even at mid and long range.

She's a ton of fun once her playstyle clicks. Yesterday I had a game where I was shitposting as much as possible, el oh el between every kill and to my team, had a 28 kill streak no deaths with four gold medals.
Nobody voted for me because they were all pissed off, it was great. The funny thing is that as a tank with defense matrix one of her main uses is to distract and pull fire from the rest of your team, and playing her like that makes her much more effective.
