I only played the SNES version of BoF2, since people told me the fan retranslation was much better. Judging from what I've seen of the original version, I can totally commend its script quality, but it obviously doesn't fix the rest of the game's problems, like the insane encounter rate, the constant need to grind for levels and equipment money, the tedious backtracking, the near-brain-dead combat, and the boring, and the thoroughly underwhelming Fusion mechanics. I actually liked the desert because it pushed your party (and your navigation skills) to the limit of their endurance, and figuring out the "solution" at the end when one of your team was down for the count was pretty nifty. The whole place really sold itself as the "Desert of Death," and you got a good sense therest of the world was the last tiny bit of life on the planet.
However, I think a translation typo caused everyone to go the opposite way at one crucial step in the complicated directions, which is probably why it infuriates so many people. I had to attempt it at least 4 times before I finally figured out the right path through.

Pretty much. The first game is also pretty dated and basic, but I'd say it's worth trying a bit to see if you can enjoy it for what it is. The second game is when Capcom figured out how to make a good JRPG with better party members, but they broke the dragon system's kneecaps. The first game's dragon form is basically an "I win" button for most battles, but in the second game, they made them into single cast spells that use up all mp and don't do much damage AND don't count as elemental attacks.

I haven't played DQ1, but probably around that encounter rate. It can happen every step, or it can happen every 10 steps. It's very random but happens frequently enough that it's noticeable. There should be an item you can get to ward enemy encounters for awhile, though, that you can get inexpensively from shops.
