Did anyone actually notice a difference in graphics between the PS3 and PS4? It really is getting harder and harder to notice.
graphics could have stopped improving with the gamecube/ps2 era and I would be okay with that
I also noticed how PS3 is where the no games meme started and it eventually moved to the PS4.
Notice how PS1/2 have Ape Escape trilogy while the other two dont have any AE platformer, i wonder what could this mean.
the PS4 can only handle PS3 games at 60fps, of course there wouldn't be a jump
pc could run ps3 games at 4k 5 years ago
>>340216020

You have to be retarded to think there is nothing more to graphics than the amount of polygons objects have.
>>340216020
Easily noticeable.
>implying video games exist
A single screen of data at minimum resolution (640x480), is 307,200 pixels. Open up a new picture in MSPaint, set its size to 640x480, fill it with all black, save it, and check its file size. That's 4.01KB.
Now change one pixel to a non-black color and save it again. That's 4.02KB.
Assuming you control that pixel with the arrow keys, and all the game is is moving that pixel in the 640x480 space, that's a total of 307,200 possible locations. 307,200 * 4.02 = 1,234,944KB.
That's 1.2 GIGABYTES.
The average sprite in an NES "game" is supposedly eight pixels tall.
That's OVER NINE GIGABYTES, for a single non-animated sprite moving in a featureless black void.
Of course, there are steps a designer could take to shrink the size of the game, mostly by decreasing the freedom of the moving pixels; still, that all goes to shit when you factor in ANOTHER sprite. This results in what is known as a 'combinatorical explosion' where the number of bytes necessary to hold every position exceeds the number of protons in the local galactic cluster.
Video games will not be possible in practice until computers occupy something other than space and are made of something other than matter.

This is wise.

Particle effects and lighting. Seriously. It's getting hard to push higher poly counts without crippling the GPU, but lighting and particle effects are new tricks the current run of console GPUs can handle nicely.
>>340217620
>>340217963
it also ties into resolution.

>>340218256
Particle effects still haven't surpassed Crysis and lighting hasn't improved any outside of EA games for the most part.
GTAV has better lighting than 99% of next-gen games and that came out before these new consoles.
>>340216391
It means that no one gives a fuck about Ape Escape anymore, sadly. Shame, really; the first game was insanely creative, and the second and third entries really had some good magic going too. More to the point, outside of Nintendo the mascot platformer is a dead franchise.

Infamous SS relied on it pretty heavily, as did Killzone Shadow Fall. I don't have an Xbone, but I'd bet your bottom dollar that the new Halo features some of the lighting and particle effect tricks we saw in those Sony titles. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm primarily a PC gamer too, but at the launch E3, that was what they were talking about mostly.

MC and GoW are First and third-person shooters. LBP is hardly emblematic of the platform, Kratos hasn't had a current gen release, and the remastered R&C didn't do too well to invigorate the film it was promoting. Also, they can spend like 30 years making the best fucking games ever imaginable, because they wont fall behind in graphics.
If you take more than like 3 years to make a game these days, it comes out looking bad graphically compared to other games.
Imagine the kind of games we will see, when the average game is developed for 8+ years.
Nowadays, lighting and art style are what make games look good.

>>340216020
There's more to graphics than triangle count. There's rendering resolution, framerate, texture resolution, lighting and shadow techniques, physics simulations, audio quality, animation quality, particle effects, map size, object count, etc. Even if OP's image wasn't a misguided attempt to make a statement, there is still a ton of progress to be made on graphical fidelity for real-time rendering.
And yes, I have noticed a difference between PS3 and PS4. Just compare FF13 and FF15, the difference is night and day.

There is more an improvement to simulation than graphics, you are right, but there is a ton of work that can be done to improve how sounds are affected in a simulated environment. Similar to raytracing for lighting, you could apply the same kind of processing for audio to get something that sounds much better than something just playing directly off a triggered action.

Hell, just look at how people on /v/, the supposed "intellectual elite" of video games, put graphics on a pedestal. We say we want better gameplay, but try and go one thread without someone bringing up graphics. Console wars? More power = better, because better graphics.
They know that they can sell graphics. And that benefits the GPU manufacturers, who get to sell exorbitantly-overpriced technology to the highest bidder, all in an attempt to court video game companies so they can use that power as inefficiently as possible, exploit consumers, and make a few bucks.
It's not going to stop until you - yes, you, personally - stop giving a shit about the big games and start funding the little guys. Indie games and other small titles actually get bought in small enough amounts that, yes, your dollar does matter. And they're usually at least mildly creative. And cheap.

I think after another generation or two of GPU hardware we'll finally have enough power to do fairly realistic smoke and liquid simulation. You need to keep in mind that the PS4 and Xbone are the first consoles with asynchronous compute, and they're low-end async GPUs. Currently realistic smoke is too resource intensive and requires developers take away from other areas visually.

>>340228110
To me its a prove of lazynes, they just waited untill novidya gave them physics and that kind of shit.
The volumetric smoke was done before.
Need for speed did it with.... i cant remember the fucking name... AHH pro street, when you have to do a burnout, to put the tires on temperature, that smoke was volumetric, but it was just there, nowhere else.
Then came the particle system, wich was used at first for vegetation and non particle stuff, and with it, they animate the flora without scripting anything.
You see, most of the stuff they make, its just an easy way to do shit, i really must put the blame on someone else, becase the poor shit dev is just following orders, like, imagine yourself making this kind of shit, and then you start to see a nose from the top of your box, and then you hear....
>i need that shit done for tomorow morning, no excuse
>but look master goldstein, look the amazing system im coding to make the smoke volumetric and better looking
>so, you are using your work hours for your personal projects???
>no no, im doing this for the game
>and where did i tell you that i want that, stop it now, and go back to the work im paying for
>yes boss, as you wish........
So its just more than lazy devs.
also, the traditional method werks because its just copypasta of what you already have, like pic.
Now, toddd take this to the extreme, when even the LOD layers go on top of the other without making the lower ones dissapear, and save resources
Bassicaly you have the meshes and textures from all LODs at the same time, wich made the game back then unplayable.

That's a dumb question, isn't it?
I mean, of COURSE graphics are better. Compare Dark Souls 1 or 2 to Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3.
Or The Last Of Us to Uncharted 4.
There is CLEARLY a pretty sizable gap in graphics quality.
The problem is, it's not the MASSIVE, UTTERLY ERA DEFINING, PARADIGM SHIFTING leap that we experienced with the jump from the SNES era to the N64, or the N64 to the Gamecube.
Hell, the leap from PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era to 360/PS3 era wasn't THAT spectacular either, just bigger resolutions and more normal maps.
So was there a leap in graphics? Of course there was. The only people who don't think so either have no idea what they're talking about, or were simply spoiled by growing up in an era when graphic leaps were synonymous with massive paradigm shifts in game design

I actually thought it was hilarious when you said "and you're right, I'm not playing it on max" because all he could respond with was "again, you didn't max it out" pretending that he had something more to argue with you with. He was so desperately hoping you wouldn't admit you didn't max it that he genuinely pretended he didn't read your post when he responded to it.

The game's camera moves forward and back depending on how far characters are from each other. It can vary between showing 1/3 of the stage to all of the stage. LODs are nessessary when the camera is far back.

Japan will never make games for PC, let alone for consoles other than Sony's. 8th gen is going to be the resurgence of Japanese games, and almost none of the currently announced Japanese games will be on PC. At least, not within a few years, when those games are old, busted, and spoiled.

Because Microsoft paid them. It says a lot about Japan's console market when you LITERALLY have to pay developers to stop sucking Sony's dick dry. There IS no contest in Japan, the Wii U is irrelevant, the Xbox is dead, Windows is a porn box. That only leaves PlayStation, and WHAT A FUCKING COINCIDENCE that ALL Japanese games come to that console, and HOLY SHIT, all Japanese gamers own a PS4!? Holy crackers!
That's like saying 'no one makes games for Linux because everyone already uses Windows'. Windows has a monopoly on operating systems much like how PlayStation has a monopoly in Japanese console gaming.
>>340235578
This here is the real reason why PS4 is winning as hard as it is. There are millions of gamers who want to play the next KH, or the next FF, or the next whatever japanese series, Dark Souls. It's Japanese, so it's going to be on PS4. It might be on Xbone, it might be on Wii U, but that's not a surefire guess. If you buy a PS4, you're getting the quality japanese games.
>>340235578
>Because Microsoft paid them.
so? you said "never", that's demonstrably false and i was calling you out on it. also platinum game, a japanese dev, is making an exclusive for xbox one. quit spouting dumb shit.
>>340236102
And yet, despite Japanese support being the sole ace in the hole Sony has, they're more concerned with pampering western developers. Not that they don't appreciate them, they KNOW the Japanese developers simply have no other choice.
Hell, this was true with Sega. Nintendo had all the major Japanese developers on their side, while Sega only had a few, namely Technosoft and Toaplan. However, Sega had to place their bets on the West, since the westerners are no strangers to multiplatform game development. They were irrelevant in Japan, but the EU and USA market helped their leverage. Hell, even Sony had to depend on western games because Nintendo had a chokehold on Jap devs. Spyro and Crash being the console's first hits is proof of this, which caused Japanese developers to jump from Nintendo.
In short, the west is a free market, Japan is a prison where all the inmates have no choice but respect the big bad who beat up the old boss.

I seriously never understood why someone would ever become so assblasted as to make this chart. All it ever really highlights is that a skilled modeller can naturally make better models than an unskilled modeller. Which is obvious.
But it doesn't actually do squat to argue against diminishing returns.

>Witcher 2 on Xbox has similar graphics
You can't possibly say this without providing a screenshot
>>340223625

>>340238432
You're an idiot. The chart is showing the flaw in the original image - subdividing a model doesn't make it more detailed. It actually makes it smoother.
For the image to be accurate, it should be presenting four models, each made at the polycount they're at. Otherwise, you're falsely attributing the negative aspects of one phenomenon - subdivision - to a different phenomenon, that being increased polycounts.
>>340217620
>>340218735
No matter the dev mentality you won't see much progress like this.
In the past when hardware got better you could easily make new models and game assets that you simply couldn't have before and it was a clear difference that was immediately distinguishable.
But in this example here about multiplying by 10 really doesn't work in practice unless we're talking about straight up copy pasting or otherwise reusing assets.
The people making the assets still need to be paid, and making ten times the number of assets isn't exactly free nor does it fit within sensible development cycles.
This is why you aren't seeing as striking improvements if any in terms of graphical fidelity anymore. Nor even seeing great leaps in doing more with the graphical fidelity we already had.
Forget about hardware limitations for a moment. Hardware has come to the point that the more striking limitation is not the hardware itself, but the limitations of the developers making the actual assets.
>>340239012
>subdividing a model doesn't make it more detailed. It actually makes it smoother.
Nothing else is ever really implied though.
Do people honestly look at the image and assume that it automatically becomes more detailed or something? No. That's ridiculous.
It just illustrates a problem of diminishing returns, and >>340228631 honestly only highlights it even further.
They're both showing that diminishing returns are indeed a thing.
>>340223625

>>340217532

Framerate isn't being targeted to 30fps because the console can't handle 60.
Even the NES could handle 60fps.
It's being targeted because people like you, who actually care, are extremely niche and 60fps isn't worth the trouble for anything other than fighters or other games that actually NEED it.
>>340240202
>Framerate isn't being targeted to 30fps because the console can't handle 60.
except it is, or they wouldn't give you the option to play 60 fps with half the resolution like some recent games
>>340217532
The PS4 was a huge mistake. Sony should have just jumped straight to whatever the PS5 might be.
>>340240454
>Having graphic options in consoles
I remember gran turismo 4 on ps2 let you chose the reslolution, and could go up to 1080i wich is 1920x1080 at 30fps interpolated at 60.
This is the only example i remember.
But nowdays it will confuse retards, and show them that 60fps looks good actually, better than higher detailed cinematic 24fps.
Its not convenient, thats why it wont happen.
>>340240454
But then there are games that run at 1080p60fps on the exact same hardware.
I mean, there's a lot more to it than just ticking a box and hoping it works. Textures, models, particles, lighting, physics, anything that could possibly be running at any given moment in a game.
But the hardware itself is not incapable of 60fps.
If a dev wishes it, they can make it happen.
But there's a thing that happened with Insomniac, and I'm sure it's what happened with many other developers.
Insomniac targeted 60fps on Ratchet & Clank ever since the first game.
But after A Crack in Time, they stopped. Not because they couldn't (the next Ratchet was on PS3 as well), but because it simply wasn't worth the bother.
Nobody noticed.
Nobody cared.
Sales and reviews were not made better.
So they just dropped 60fps and went with the easier-to-achieve 30fps for all the games after ACiT.
These games COULD have been 60fps.
It's just that nobody cares, so why bother.
>>340240021
the diminishing returns don't even hold if you have enough geometry to model microscopic details like scratches and pores. The thing is, those are almost always more efficiently done using texture mapping techniques. He is right, the picture is misleading, because there IS added detail in the first two models, but the rest only smooth the mesh.
>>340221807
The second picture isn't an in-game render.
>>340241112
>the diminishing returns don't even hold if you have enough geometry to model microscopic details like scratches and pores.
How so? At that point you're talking about details no one is likely to even see without zooming in and or studying things carefully. That is basically the definition of diminishing returns.

Are you joking? Just using light to play off the structures will give you loads more perceived detail> This is the difference between having a scar that's just a flat texture on a smooth arm and having a modeled scar.
>>340241712
no. Microsurface geometry, if sampled correctly, would actually simulate many of the effects we get with normal maps today. You don't need to zoom in on a rough brick to see that it is rough. Without texture mapping, a low poly brick is impossible to make rough.
>>340233187
>wee U shit
That was the 3DS you fucking retard
>>340240816
GT4 wasn't actually 1080i though, it rendered at approximately 480p and upscaled, and the 480i mode only worked in time trial mode.
Original Xbox had some games that could output 1080i as well but iirc it was only like 5 titles.
>>340242340
err, the 1080i mode only worked in time trial*
>>340242151
or just use normal maps instead of wasting geometry budget on a scar
>>340242182
>>340242151
>if sampled correctly, would actually simulate many of the effects we get with normal maps today
So not that big of a difference. What striking differences would you get that would somehow be a huge leap?
And even if we are talking about visual improvements, it would hardly be a huge leap. It would be just about a step.
>>340216290
So the consoles you grew up on?
>>340216020
Polygons are not the determining factor of how good a game looks. It's mostly in the lighting and animation.
We are still a long ways off from global illumination, not "global illumination" that they are shilling in modern games. I'm talking about full ray tracing with reflection and refraction support.
>>340242458

>>340242067
How do these compare to the PC versions? Part of me wants to say that RE6, Dishonored, Deadpool, Borderlands, Payday 2, and SR4 look better on console than the vanilla PC versions, since Sony and MS can buy better graphics.
>>340242708
Are you retarded? These are all just making use of the higher settings from PC. It's the "Definitive editions" that redo a lot of the assets to make them worse.
>>340242473
obviously in the presence of texture maps it wouldn't make a big visual difference. Aren't we talking about the visual improvement afforded by JUST increases in polycount, which the Beethoven example fails to illustrate correctly? It seems pointless to try to explain this further, though.
>>340242458
i meant budget as in how many polygons can be rendered mantaining a good performance.
Just look at this example, The 3rd model would never be used in a game, like a finely modeled scar wouldn't, because it's a waste or resources
>>340242960
>>340242705
wrong reply
>>340242793
You sure? I wouldn't put it past them if the console versions were entirely reworked with all new assets, especially considering how often developers ported the last gen versions of games to PC. Not to mention how, like I said, the platform holders can get in bed with publishers and cut a deal.
>>340227116
implementing nvidia based proprietary code is much harder than just making a plain and putting a texture on it. A flat 3d surface takes no special consideration, using 3d volumetric effects requires a supported gpu, enough gpu power to run it, enough cpu to run the cpu side of volumetric effects, code implementation so the engine can support it, and debugging all that code.
If it's done early in development it can be reasonably done in time but if a project is already in the works, implementing gpu based physics is a giant pain in the ass.
There is a pretty clear difference between the PS3 and the PS4. It may not be as huge of a jump as PSX to PS2 or PS2 to PS3, but it's there.
Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time (PS3) on the left,Ratchet & Clank (PS4) on the right. Not entirely equivalent screenshots but it was the best I could find. ACiT still looks great, but R&C on PS4 looks even better. PS3 could not do a city like R&C PS4's Metropolis.

k
>>340243564
those cutscenes are still in-engine and not pre-rendered
>>340242804
>Aren't we talking about the visual improvement afforded by JUST increases in polycount
No. We're talking about how increased polycounts at this doesn't by itself provide a huge enough leap of graphical fidelity to be a real leap.
Yes you can make small improvements everywhere and things can always be improved upon, but these improvements are never "wow!" anymore because the relative improvements are just so much smaller than they used to be.
And why assume that the Beethoven image is "JUST" about polycounts? You can visually see in its examples that it's not just an added polycount and it should be obvious. It's about how said polygons are used. But even all while that most certainly holds true, it still illustrates its point of diminishing returns.
Like when >>340228631 takes it even further and adds a whole bunch of new examples as well as adding even more details to it with more work, it just validates >>340216020 even further because in spite of the additional work put into it the difference between >>340216020 and >>340228631 is still slim. Even if >>340228631 looks better.

You know how much copypasta is in this shit and also know that in early development the "art director" becomes the "dictator"
There is no early development, because its more engine related than the game it self.
Like taking gamebryo and rename it creation engine because we did some touches here and there to "update it", and that update were because it started to look like a ps1 game in 2007 when the BLOOM and post process shit started to appear. not to improve what they had, more to not look too outdated.
Just look at the quality of the animations in fallout 4, thats the limits of the engine and also shit quality control, not in the levels of dragon age cisquisition, but still pretty shi.
Its the same method aplied to another stuff.
Why improve the engine we have when people will buy my shit even if it looks like crap???

This is clearly an NES title just 'up-resed' to 1080p.
Uncharted 4 has set a graphical benchmark that all consoles, and PCs for that matter, should aspire to. If you are going for graphics that is. I've been playing games solidly since the mid 1980's and I still can't believe that THIS is what games are now. I remember when Mortal Kombat was the most REALISTIC game ever. I love my PC, but there isn't anything out there like Uncharted 4. The fact that Naughty Dog can get that kind of quality out of the PS4 should impress everyone that understands the specs of the PS4. How in the fuck they got a game like that on my PS4 without turning my PS4 into a fucking fireball, I'll never know.
>>340243956
Lara does look different, though not necessarily better. I know DmC is more or less the PC version with a few mods, and I do find it funny how the mods that addressed the 'issues fixed' in DE suddenly vanished. Also, GoW UE looks leaps and bounds better over the vanilla PC version, though UE was also ported to PC.
What I'm saying is, PC has the odds stacked against it. It has no one to buy AAA exclusives, it has no one to bias games to it, it has no one to buy exclusive DLC, it has no one to buy it timed exclusivity, and it has zero presence in Japan. 8th gen is when Sony and MS discovered PC's biggest weaknesses and started taking potshots at it in an attempt to make it irrelevant.

You are an absolute moron. That is how the game looks, and his screen shot isn't actually that good anyway. The game looks better in motion. First it was "No way in hell is the game going to look anywhere near that good", and then it was "It's getting a huge downgrade". Then it came out and suddenly it the conversation turned into thread after thread of Nadine. If you think Uncharted LOOKS bad, then I will assume that you need corrective lenses. I think there are a lot of games out that, in terms of gameplay mechanics, really could be done on the PS2. They won't look as good, but they would play the same.
>>340245050
You got it wrong.
With photorealistic lighting, you still can do whatever you want in the art direction, but it both make the process more simple, and leave room to do something else, making the overall far better.
Look at pixar movies, they have photorealistic lighting, and still they are... disney cartoons.
Its not the same as doing something as boring and realistic as possible.

The Playstation share button doesn't add any effects to the image. The guy posting pics of Uncharted for in here isn't using the in game 'photo-mode', or he's using another method of capture. Uncharted has very good graphics. I'm still not sure how that is even up for debate? I'd be happy to play a game with graphics and performance like that on any PC or console.

Crysis is like 10 years old, and it aged very very well...
Is there any other game with that level of physics and graphics that can hold for 10 years because the initial specs were so high that they needed to lock it???
Most of the newer games dont give a fuck about this, they will even downgrade the PC version to dont make the gap with the console version too big (see watchdogs fiasco)

Cutscenes specifically use higher quality models since they can choose to render specific parts of the map. On top of that the textures are pretty average for PS2 to compensate.

Games definitely do look better than last gen, but it's nowhere near as big a leap as it was between 5th gen and 6th gen. 8th gen is just 7th gen polished up nice and shiny. By 9th gen we can hope that console hardware races will have ended, and then by 10th gen every console game will be consistently 60fps.

The Japanese are an extremely isolationist society, and don't want much from the western world. Uncharted actually has a fairly large fanbase in Japan which is really crazy considering it is about as 'western' as you can get. I remember one night playing Uncharted 2 multiplayer and there was a Japanese house wife that couldn't speak a word of English. I wish I got her screen name. She's probably playing Uncharted 4 now. Or died in the tsunami. Now I'm sad.

Remasters that are worse than the original PC version:
Sleeping Dogs
Tomb Raider

As for a good remaster I can only think of Valkyria Chronicles.
>>340248808
Most of them do, you just have to increase the resolution and subtly adjust some values(sharpening, contrast, etc) using software(like sweetfx or your gpu panel/software). On top of those default "im better than u" toggles most multiplatform games have settings that go above the console's medium settings. An example of that was MGSV which looked much better on PC maxed out.
>>340216020
Stuff like character models are very similar but ambient effects and less-noticeable stuff have improved greatly.

I am fine with 7th gen graphics.
I am fine with 6th and even 5th gen graphics.
I simply want to play "fun" games.
It is easier however to make a game look more pretty than have actual work put into refining the gameplay and expanding the content of the game.
Pretty games appeal more to the casual market much like stunningly shot black buster movies that lack substance themselves.
It is terrible, but it fills seats and the numerious bullshots many of us will see in about 6 days at E3 will definitely sell some games to casuals who will have those games pre-ordered after the shows.
I don't give too many fucks about graphics.
What I do care about is 1080p 60fps and if a modern game can't do that I do not give a fuck about how many triangles there are on a person's mo-capped fucking face in whatever "cinimatic exsperience" a triple-A studio is trying to sell me.

Uncharted 4 stays solid at 30fps. You have to do quite a bit to make it drop, but even then it is momentary. Digital Foundry did a pretty in depth video on it. MGSV also runs at 60fps on the PS4, and I don't think it ever drops.
60fps is absolutely subjective. I like it fine, but I also like 30fps fine. Framerate is only a problem when it is shifting wildly. Thankfully most modern games don't have that problem.
what the fuck happened? games like onimusha, DMC1 and MGS2 looked pretty good back then AND ran at 60 fps most of the time on the fucking PS2. i just don't get how it's suddenly impossible to achieve the balance between graphical fidelity and performance. how hard is it to tone down the visuals a little bit to make it possible?

I was far impressed with LA noire facial capture, at some point i thought there was some kind of wizzard editing, and the animations were a video somehow superpose into the rendered face.
The body animations were not that good, sometimes people went from moving to a complete stop in 1 frame, and go at full speed to the next animation, wich was a killer becase i was really in the uncanny valley right there.
Now with mgsv it dosent seem that good somehow, maybe its because its not the first time i saw that level of facial capture.
and still amazed of how shit are both facial and body animations in fallout4.
>>340250673
Onimusha, DMC1 and MGS2 all had devs that put their heart into the game, devs with actual standards for themselves and their players. 30fps game devs simply don't have that passion.
>>340250774
LA noire facial capture is literally just a texture
>>340216290
In terms of polygon count per square inch of screen the gen 6 and gen 7 consoles actually were about the same. The difference is gen 7 consoles had 7 times the screen real estate.
>>340216020
Polygon wise? No. I find that the PS3 is roughly equal to the PS4 in terms of looks. However, I can notice a dip in quality between PS4 games to PS3 games simply due to frame rate issues and certain filters. Compare Dragon Quest Builders from PS4:
https://youtu.be/dzwl-oyU5R8?t=10m40s
To Dragon Quest Builders from PS3:

It has sporadic drops at most on PS4 and even then we are talking a one frame drop or the 'drop' during close ups on the character models. The PC also does this. You make it sound like the game is an unplayable mess, and you are very wrong. It is a very solid running game. I have it on my PS4 and my PC. And with hundreds of hours between the two I can count on one hand how many times the framerate dropped low enough to be noticed. It is a rarity.
>>340220352
God damn, that screenshot of the old fart in Crysis 3 still impresses me to this day. For an early 2013 game it looked absolutely incredible, definitely wish there were more npcs in that game. I don't think any game has superior character models to Crysis 3, even three years later. Better hardware doesn't automatically mean better graphics. Nor should it. Single rendering isn't going to get a huge increase at this point. We are going to see hardware relegated to different things like AI, and rendering MORE things not just making them look better but having more of them. Also lighting and shadows have a long way to go, as well as other things like volumetric clouds and general environment renderings.

graphics hit a plateau awhile back, you get some good faces and stuff but you are likely never going to get more 'realistic' looking than things are now, not for a long time anyway
now it's mostly about view distance and how much shit you can see on screen
you might see much more realistic enviornments eventually but realistic models are pretty much out the window at this point in time
it actually wouldn't surprise me at all to see games turn into 'movies' of sorts where they just use real people and actors instead of just the models with those shitty ball things for animation, just import an actor doing specific things and transfering it over completely rather than trying to use an animated model, right now that's honestly the only feasible seeming way to 'improve graphics' as far as models go

>>340255576
I was strictly speaking of the 2011 TÅhoku earthquake and tsunami. I'm glad that none of my friends died in it, but I think the death toll was close to twenty thousand. Time Warner Cable gave the Japan channel to everyone for over a month, and I watched the news everyday. It was heartbreaking. One story made me stop watching all together. It was an elderly couple that had saved up a bunch of money to finally buy a big ticket luxury item. A flat screen TV. She said the Tsunami sounded like a fucking train and she and her husband ran. Days later they were able to get back into their home, but the mud was all the way up to the fucking ceiling. It broke my heart. To this day it is the only relief effort that I've given money to. People were afraid that Kentarou Miura was in it and died. Thankfully not the case.
I think that's probably enough to end the thread. Graphics or something.
>>340256258
On the bright side, people are far less likely to die from natural disasters than they were in the past. Those old people probably had a decent retirement fund and can relocate and watch some One Punch Man on a new smaller flatscreen TV. And maybe the smaller, cheaper TV saves them from getting a headache, who knows. I mean fuck, at least that old fart has a wife, most of us on /v/ spend our entire lives being rejected from women, having to rot every day in loneliness and misery, desperately hoping something good comes along, but it never does, and each day carries on full of suffering and anguish until we finally croak over, dying sad and alone without having experienced the essential figments of happiness that define the human condition and make it worthwhile.

unless its some stuff like micromachines (why no new micromachines game yet... ever??) or ignition, i would prefer the most realistic enviroment possible because of the immersion, even on games like carmageddon that has nothing to do with reality, thats why in those games the damage model is so good, but also a realistic looking game put a serious tone in it
>first person shooters
Again, unless is some game like splatoon, i will prefer the most realistic enviroment possible because of immersion.
Now, a game i love and i love even more because of the graphics it has is patapon, its 2d, its low res as shit, with Rpg elements, and in reality its just a learn the pattern and press buttons to win.
But how they can acomplish so much with so little
You have to see that... thats the goal.
Itsthe end of the map when the soil stops and the water starts, you can also see the sunshine, wich is THAT
Tl;Dr: graphics for immersion, and the rest to have fun.

could be.
But if you been following the thread, you will notice there is also a play with the "how much shit is in front of you" and LOD hard to notice changes.
The space in there as small and confined as possible, same happened with the new thief, you cant climb any house or anything, and you have a loading zone every 20 feet because it will force the game to show too much shit on screeen.
Same is happening here, you can put shit that goes to the sky in front of you at full detail, and they dont even have to put something more than the skybox, wich also can be reduced alot.
now, look at this pic, now sorry todd...ill say.
>see that planet and that little moon? you can go there.
Now, compare the graphics detail in both, i know space engineers is not the most optmized game, not even stable sometimes, but this is an example of a very very large "map" and the shit you have to deal with.
>you can see where the rendered grass stops
>you can see how the textures go into 3dfx mode
>you can see the lack of textures in some objets to save memory to something else.
Now, lets imagine that both have the exact same ammount of polygons, you can see why it looks that good.

The ps4 hardware is build in from same generation as PS3. All you get is settings from medium to high. Wait for the next generation GPs and you will see a difference.

Spot the guy who's never played the game and is just making stuff up on the internet.

>The human eye can't discern an increase in post processing or resolution!
It literally pauses the exact frame you're on and lets you move the camera. People would notice if the image instantly looked better.
>>340216020
Nah, not really.
Also, your pic is a lie.

You're stupid.
