I am trying to understand the second part of your analogy. They take away the keys, and what do I get mad about, and when they tell me what? I don't think you played the game. I wouldn't call it flashy, and a lot of the colors aren't exactly "bright", take much of Velen for example. Are they supposed to make everything gray and brown? Look outside, it is summer where I live. There are what you would call "bright" colors everywhere. Why can't the game include those? I think they are supplementary to the game. The game has the best writing in a long time, save for the radovid questline.
The combat system is serviceable, the quest mechanics are somewhat retatible and the character development is not great.
But the characters are so fucking great, its content density is superb, the immersion is top notch and it just gets the spirit of the books.
I get that it's combat can't hold up to dmc and it's rpg system can't hold up to dnd, but it's a really good mix of both systems.
But despite all it's short coming it's one of the best zelda-likes since the n64 era and I have it doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

It's really good for a video game. The characters are well fleshed out, their actions make sense for the most part and it references many slavic fairy tales instead of tolkien or generic revenge story #6345.

It's all relative. What's the next best arpg? If you ask plebs they say Skyrim. If you ask somebody with a bit more taste they say gothic 2. It's better than gothic 2 and leagues above skyrim. It's not perfect, but it has different priorities. The combat is not horrible, memes aside. It serves its purpose and it's kinda fun. Ciri- princess who rebels against her title and decides to live a vagabond life. Is part of some prophecy and is there just as a plot excuse.
Triss- an almost perfect women, but doubtful in herself cause she lacks the "edge" factor. Also plays the role of the damsel in distress a bunch of times in the game.
Jen- fem fatale, unapproachable and out of grasp to most men. Once you get close to her, you see shes really dull and shallow.
Vesimir- father figure to a bunch of outcasts, an old all around good guy everybody likes and respects.
zoltan, dendilion are okay and fun guys and I have no complaint about them.

It was actually pretty good marketing. Since it was the third game in an established series with a cult following, but had a much higher budget than past games, they had to oversimplify it in the marketing in order to sell it to the new players who don't know anything about Witcher. They even went as far as to make the 3 on the cover look like a monster claw mark and started referring to the game in interviews as "The Witcher: Wild Hunt" in order to prevent newcomers to the series from being discouraged because it's the third game.
And probably over half of their sales and GOTY awards ended up coming from people who had never played the past games.

Basically you're supposed to prove that you fulfill all the five chivalric virtues by doing certain decisions in other quests (you get atleast two chances per virtue to prove yourself). You get the quest from a guy in a lake which is on an island that's also in a lake north-west of Beauclair.

Misrepresenting the product is basically what marketing is for though. At least, from the corporate perspective.
And I think it's better to have most of your players come into the game thinking its about a badass monster killer who doesn't afraid of anything and nothing more, than it is to have them not come into the game at all. Because if they marketed it honestly, that marketing would have probably only appealed to people who are already fans of the series. To newer players, being a traveling monster slayer in an open world is the most attractive prospect.
I also think the game does a really good job of challenging the way players' mindset and what they think about the whole plot. There's very rarely a simple contract, they all come with some kind of moral dilemma that usually ties into what you think it means to be a witcher, or how important certain values are to the player. So anyone that goes in with a shallow mindset, I think if they have a relatively open mind they will eventually have their mind changed.

What I'm referring to is out of combat. Sometimes I'm investigating a scene and my controller just vibrates.
I thought it meant that I had found a clue, but after trying it out in other investigation scenes it doesn't vibrate when I find a clue.

Bros, I have the game and all DLCs. I'm doing a blind playthrough with no minimap/fast travel and I'm moving at a snail's pace but it's great. However, I am starting to tire of Velen and the constant storm after storm and lack of comfy countryside such as what was in White Orchard. What environment types can I expect in the areas to come as I expand into Novigrad and Skellige territories, and beyond?

Because when I play with a minimap I spend more time navigating with the minimap than looking at wherever the fuck I actually am. It's more satisfying to learn passage and navigation by familiarity rather than following a dot. It also makes the game feel larger.

I do my best to go by directions given in game, either by note or NPC dialogue, but sometimes it's simply too vague and the objective area too narrow. Typically I'll just take a look at where it's marked from afar then as I come to the area I try to find it by memory. It feels more true to the nature of investigation.
