You also have missions with NPC companions. In Shinovi you only ever fought against multiple characters.
Bigger and more varied playing fields. There's not as much recycling as in Shinovi, though it still happens.
Just overal better experience. Look at the original Neptunia games on PS3 to figure what kind of progress you should be expecting.

Yes. Kichikuou is closest to Sengoku in gameplay and takes place on whole Continent, though it's sort of clunky, as you'd expect from 90s strategy game. It's also freeware and translated now.
For other translated stuff, definitely check out Toushin Toshi 2, it's the game that put Alicesoft on map as proper game developer. It's standard JRPG dungeon crawler. Also translated and freeware.
The Rance games prior-Kichikuou are kind of hit or miss. If you like the setting and characters, check them out. 3 is where story starts being proper, and IV is where gameplay amd graphics start being decent.
Out of untranslated games, 5D is RNG-Simulator. It's fun, but pretty simple and short.
VI is proper JPRG epic. Rags to riches, fighting against corrupt government, invading army... it's great.
Quest is last one I've played, and it's fucking glorious. Very "arcade" JRPG, if that makes sense. My food is getting cold, I'll explain in more detail if you're interested.
Oh, also check out Big Bang Age. It's strategy like Sengoku, but with single troops instead of armies, and delinquent/school theme instead of nation conquest. Still great though.

I think I should talk bit more about 5D.
So, the system game has is that each chapter gives you set amount of time to complete everything and get right events, that you roll on roulette wheel for.
Then in those events, you have to solve puzzles or fight enemies. For puzzles you can use special characters from them, each having higher chance of success at some tasks. In battles, everything is detemined by dice. You have six slots for actions, and if 3 is rolled, everybody does the action in that slot for that round.
Anyway, Quest. You might remember from Sengoku that there is limited number of actions to each skill, and that returns here. So when taking on a quest, you have to consider which skills to use where, when to use your character/party switches and how much optional stuff you want to do.
The game doesn't have actual save slots, auto-saving whenever action is performed. And quests themself are short enough that there's just suspension stop.
This also means that you can replay any quest whenever. If there is a choice that affects game flags, you can go and re-do that for different outcome. So if certain action would cause main story not to progress, it might unlock some what-if quest. There's tons of weird unlocks like that, having certain characters in your party during certain quests might unlock somebody else, finding random item in chest might get you a new quest...
It's great that gameplay is very smooth, or all of this would just feel like a chore. I really hope it will be released in English at some point.
