ITT:
Things in gaming that people just didnt care about and faded into obscurity
I'll start
Oh man was pic related awkward. Pretty sure people didnt even notice when it was removed from the WiiU with an update
Project Spark for the Xbox One
The infamous game where conker told you that if you wanted to see him in another game so bad you should make it yourself
People didnt even know when it came out and just recently it stopped receiving support
RIP
Microsofts Kinect
The E3 they unveiled it at was so awkward.
>>340123127
To this day, I still have no idea how the fuck this was supposed to work.
Still use my Wii U gamepad as a TV remote, though.
>>340124228
that was such a handy feature
probably one of the best features of the WiiU
>>340124228
>>340124352
Or you could just use your smartphone.
The wire that allowed you to connect your GBA to a Gamecube
Great idea, terrible execution. The games that used it FORCED you to use it for mutilplayer. That meant having a wire for each gameboy. Theres alot of great games people would never experience to the fullest
RIP FF Crystal Chronicles and Four Swords for gamecube
>>340124497
But it's always missing, the WIIU gamepad never leaves it's room
>>340124497
My cable doesn't have a thing for using your phone
>>340124112
Kinect sold millions though, casuals ate it up.
>>340123508
This came out?
>>340125131
Not for long
I used the wormlight so much as a kid and recently found my old one and tried it out again
Im just gonna say it now though
How the hell did I use this as a kid? All it does is create a huge glare on my screen
>>340123127
Xbone's TV thing failed too.
Gameboy Printer
Wonderbook
The hololens will most likely fail with the 3000$ pricetag.
THQ's uDraw failed so bad it killed the company

PS died because it was overpriced as fuck while being extremely limited and came with very few free features.
Imagine if Super Mario maker only has solid ground, bricks, coins, and koopas free and then every other asset you wanted was $5 and each theme was $10.
And then if you wanted to play anyone elses levels you needed to have purchased everything used in their level.
Now drop the quality of the game by 2/10 points and you have project spark.
>>340126969

Holy fuck, is it loke this in PS? What the fuck.
>>340124671
>four swords adventure will never get a re release on the wii u that utilizes multiple game pads or 3ds's for multiplayer
I DESPISE this fucking mess.
It's not just the stupid Zelda or Mario games, those don't matter. Its everything else about this trainwreck of a console that pisses me off.
This thing had 7 YEARS of development time put into it. The people behind it saw the rise of Nintendo and Sega first hand, and had a clear example to follow on How to make a game console RIGHT.
BUT THEN YOU ADVERTISE IT LIKE THIS
https://youtu.be/9ZIbnZuqUuo
AND NOT ONLY THAT, YOU MAKE IT COST 700 DOLLARS
AND NOT ONLY THAT, YOU MAKE 20 FUCKING MODELS OF THE CONSOLE, WITH NONE OF THEM ACTUALLY LOOKING LIKE A GAME SYSTEM.
AND YOU MAKE 20 DIFFERENT FUCKING CONTROLLERS WITH ONLY 2 THAT LOOK LIKE ACTUAL CONTROLLERS.
AND YOU MAKE THE "GAMING VERSION" OF THE SYSTEM ONLY HAVE 1 CONTROLLER PORT
AND IT HAS NO GOOD GAMES
FUCK THIS THING

What a fucking shit show.
that thing u plug into the super nintendo to play gameboy games
>>340123508
This came out? I thought it was in development for ages until it was cancelled, and that it was never released.
The problem is that people stopped watching TV. And they already have TV channel management anyway in the decoder. It served no real purpose.
as hilarious as miiverse can be, I dont think it really became the huge social media platform that Nintendo wanted it to be
>>340130784
On top of that, all of the consoles support stuff like Netflix.

I was totally prepared to get it as soon as possible.
It's cancellation meant it would lead me to get a Playstation, and become an idort for the first time.
>>340131428
They dropped all progress on dual gamepad support
probably due to low sales for the WiiU because Shiggy was quoted blaming the rapid popularity of tablets in the marker
Was the Gameboy Micro even successful enough to have Sony follow?
>>340123127

Living in Japan when the DD came out I can safely say outside of the F-Zero X x-pansion kit, and naturally doshin the giant 1 and 2, it was pretty much worthless. mario paint was lame and buggy.
If they'd actually pushed out half the games they had that were like 80% completed at the time (I'm sure someone has the link to that video of the guy with like 800 videos on youtube of a bunch of old beta carts he played on his n64dd dev kit, including paper mario that was well over 75% complete, just missing a few animations and some textural issues), it would have been a much bigger success.
The time was a factor in it's failure but the DD could have still been a useful addition, just like the famicom disk drive. There were tons of things they could have done with the internet capabilities of the n64DD, I mean, doshin the giant 2 was DLC, essentially. It had a disk version but you could download the entire thing if you had the original game.
Fuck so much potential wasted.
>>340131674
the GO was an attempt by sony to test the market for their later phone model the Xperia Play. they're pretty much the same thing, except the analog nub and start/select buttons are replaced by digital trackpads.

I never understood why you would want to buy UMD movies for your PSP

>>340133028
Movies were fine on PSP. Some companies thought UMD might be a big thing, so they ran with it. GBA shit ran at like 10 FPS and in very muted colors.
I had hackers and advent children on my PSP, I think.
>>340133028
10 for $2 would be a much fairer deal for UMD movies.

These i didn't get. I mean the fucking thing supported downloading, expandable memory and supported fucking MP4s.
>>340133753

I remember debating so hard on whether I wanted the AC game on wii anyway. I hated it on DS, like I hated the shit out of that game but I still played it to death.

>>340133958

I think that was just incidental. Doubt it had much to do with piracy, and more just a design choice considering I never needed a hacked battery to get cfw on my 1000 model though this was before the 2000 model even came out, so maybe I just wasn't keeping up with piracy at the time.
>>340134581
That hurts my skin.
>>340131364
It was the best motion controller device out there but it had like 2 good games. At least they built this shit into the ps4 controller instead of making another dildo controller

Nintendo did it first and worse
>>340124671
It was neat to play the Gameboy Player with a proper d-pad.
The original Vita has a custom port on it that was apparently meant to be used as an AV output. Some modders confirmed it's just a modified HDMI port that's been made proprietary, I think they even got it working.
I guess it was dropped after the system was underselling and the Vita TV was announced.
>>340134896
it looks like something screws into it so i honestly wound't be surprised if they had some dumb peripherals planned to gimmick the shit out of this already-gimmick

Holy fuck, thanks for mentioning that. Perfect candidate for the thread. I picked up one of these with a dualshock 3 controller for 20 bucks last year.
>>340134896
They showed a Zapper in the first trailers. That hole there is probably to put a screw in so it won't fall off.
I'm more intrigued by the port in the bottom. What is it even for? Probably some form of video output for the gamepad.
>>340134896
isn't it so floor models can be securely attached to the console and not stolen?
>>340134896
Nintendo have gamepad capture cards that attack in the port at the bottom, it probably screws in the back for stability.
>Kids love mobil phones AND video games - what can go wrong?!

Demo models at stores have the holding thing screw into it.

I saw someone using this to make a phone call in public once. He had to hold it sideways or some shit, otherwise the shitty microphone wouldn't pick up his voice.
>>340135217

The Fly Pentop computer. It would read what you drew using a camera at the tip but had extremely limited use and need specialized paper to work. At least Nintendo doesn't make you buy a separate device for them, though. The E-reader was a massive thing almost as big as the GBA itself, and support for it was quickly abandoned because no-one had one. There were extra levels in Mario 3, pokemon card bonuses and those shitty NES and arcade ports that you had to swipe a dozen cards just to play, but beyond those the only reason that ever made me feel justified in owning one is that the Mario Party card game was kind of fun. It was a neat way to have a group play a game using one gameboy, and back then I was always fascinated with games that mixed traditional gaming with video games and movies.

The mom thing hit home for me. I still feel regret, knowing that my mom worked so hard to provide for me and my siblings on minimum wage and all that she got in return was me being a little shit and asking for more vidya junk. I think about stuff like that more than I really should, even though there's no way for me to undo the damage. I try to retain a healthy connection with her, even if it is partially driven by selfish guilt. Am I a bad person for being motivated by regret?

The card game is fun. It's kind of like a card game / board game hybrid because you play with a big foldout mat. And of course, they spice it up by adding the video game element. Once in a while each player will scan a card hand have to do some little mini game that determines what happens next. It's a real neat way to get a whole room playing a game together using a single gameboy.
These days it's kind of obscure, so if you can find a complete set at a reasonable price definitely pick it up. The E-reader itself only goes for about $7 these days because no-one wants one.

For the time, the video quality was incredible. After I bought my first three though (Spider-Man, The Matrix and Napoleon Dynamite) I realized what a huge waste of money they were, even before I started ripping my DVDs to watch on the system. It just plain didn't make any kind of money sense to buy a second copy of a movie just to watch it on the PSP, and it wasn't like Blu-Ray where they'd include the DVD and UMD movie in the same package.
Again, the picture quality was incredible at the time, but the tradeoff in picture quality for ripped movies was worth it just to not have to buy the discs or carry them around. It was an expensive novelty that ultimately was nade obsolete by a far more convinient and affordable alternative.
You could watch UMD on your TV if you had one of the later PSP models, but the picture quality wasn't actually as good as DVD so there really wasn't any point.

Anyone remember how the Guitar Hero Les Paul controllers had a phone jack at the bottom for some reason? They never ended up using it, but I think the intention was to create a sort of Star Power pedal so you wouldn't have to tilt the controller every time. Shame, because that would have been really useful for me - I always fuck up the more complicated sections when I have to tilt or press the little SP button in the middle of it.

It could be one of many factors that helps establish boundaries and enforce good behavior.
The GameCube had a network adapter only for Phantasy Star Online, but there were actually 2 different adapters you could buy: one for broadband internet, and one to connect to a dial up modem. Dial up internet was already starting to phase out in 2003 and the thing is especially useless now.

So, placing pointless boundaries on children to force them to find loopholes around, or just straight up lie to their parents over, and do whatever they're told not to anyway is somehow better than just letting them do it?
Sounds like a good way to encourage rebellious behavior.
Of course, this is a case-by-case thing. Telling your kid not to do drugs is obviously different than not letting them have a TV in their room, but my point is that it's a useless "boundary" that doesn't do anything.

I was never a fan of the second generation, but HGSS was probably the best mainline Pokemon game they ever made, from a technical standpoint. No other games had that many innovations, especially for a remake. Most of them didn't even catch on for the later games.
Also, as a kad, I used to build Pokewalker waggle machines out of Lego.

For MMO's and stuff, I can kind of understand a monthly subscription, because they have to maintain all their servers and shit. Pretty sure it's all not that expensive to maintain, but STILL, I understand the concept of why it might be needed. With shit like xbox Live and PSN, where most multiplayer is fucking peer to peer, how in the ever living fuck did it get off the ground? Microsoft tried to migrate this cancer to PC and most pc users told them to fuck off. I wish console friends could do the same.

Microsoft don't seem to know or understand what the audience wants. Or even worse, they know what people want but try to convince them to buy their shit the way THEY want it. Their Xbox One annoucement was basically this and it was a god damn disater. They tried to shove their price tag, the kinect, the always online, etc. down people's throats for like a year and it just didn't work. I've actually developed for the hololens (we got one at work to experiment with), and while it's pretty impressive what they've accomplished with that device, I would never use one in its current state.
The tracking on it is great, if you place an object on. A surface in Windows holo, it stays right where you put it. And I can see that this tech will eventually be popular. But the field of view is like... tiny. Like the actual screen that is projected is a tiny window in the middle of your eyes. Whenever they show a stream of what it supposedly looks like, look at that and realize only the center 1/3rd is actually visible using the headset. Their mirroring software shows more than the headset does on screen, by far. It's deceptive, and until the fov is improved, the hololens is not worth using.
Also it doesn't bring anything to the table that you can't do without it. It's way more trouble than it's worth, until they significantly update it.
