As I said, random proportions. I liked the "Viewtiful Joe" vibe I was getting with the long limbs. As for the cyan, I liked how it looks, works better when applying external light sources than applying a shade of the original color.

monster transformations would be cool.
Always remember to expand on your characters movement. That's one of the best parts of metroid games. Getting in tight spaces with morph ball, swinging with the grappling beam, literally flying and killing everything with the screw attack.
The more ways you can get around, the more creative you can be with level design.
