Ok, first rule, talk to everyone, multiple times, even when you think you are done, talk with them once more to see if they just re-use old dialogue.
Write down any locations you gotta go to.
Explore everything.
Don't go first to the place you are ordered to go to, if you can avoid it.
If something happens, say someone goes somewhere try following them there, they might be recruitable there.
You can set your ships into formations, further back a ship is the harder it is to get shot at, so put your tanky ships at front and flagship at rear.
Check out game guides on net.
Get proficient at rock, paper, scissors.
When you are fighting the enemy in space, observe the halo around enemy ships, if it changes rapidly from red to yellow or from yellow to green, they used dodge and you should use regular attacks.
Try to time your own dodges well, this is mainly luck based.
