If the story is not integrated into the gameplay in a way that doesn't bog you down with waiting around for a bunch of NPCs to blab about shit before you can move on and do things, I want nothing of it.
If it's not a talky RPG and is supposed to be an action game, give me DOOM tapes. Pick up an item that dumps some exposition while I'm on the go. DON'T lock me in a room for several minutes Half Life style, that shit's the worst.

Modern games usually have story drive the game, with gameplay surrounding cutscenes.
Neither is superior, it's just a matter of preference.
Play Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 and you'll see the difference.
