As one of the few people who truly loved the Advanced games, Sonic Rush felt like an insult. As much as people want to claim Advance 2 is 'hold right to win', Sonic RUsh was WAY worse with it. The echidnas do have murals depicting a human-looking figure resembling Gerald or Eggman as well as a spirit-looking figure resembling Super Sonic. There was a replica of the Master Emerald shrine in the ARK, which means either Gerald ended up on Angel Island somehow or there are other Master Emerald shrines and potentially other murals elsewhere in the world. It's therefore plausible, but still headcanon, that Gerald based the look of Shadow off of Super Sonic.
It's one of those "this makes too much sense to not be official" pieces of fan theory.
