asherons call 1 and 2 were two of the best mmo's ever made. asherons call 1 was very active on the pvp server (darktide) up until about a year ago when exploiters began crashing the server to dupe rare armor / ingame currency.
asherons call 2 was simply before its time. if the game was re-released as-is, with some marketing, it would be massivelhy successful

The pvp in this game was fucking insane.
I had a bro legion commander that had most his gear decked out, i'll never forget those moments when we were outnumbered 5:1 standing on a hill with like 10 people, and him shouting with his gladiator to double maxDP aoe stun the whole fucking group. We ended up killing 40-45 of them for losing maybe 3. Crazy fights.

Yeah the game was so bad they had to implement an auto-grind feature just to keep players from giving up after two hours. Normal progression was literally impossible, it was just one gigantic unbearable grind from beginning to end.
The actual gameplay wasn't even bad all things considered, but you had to grind for days to do literally anything.

I wasted way too much of my life on this game.
I managed to get two shopkeep NPCs to fight each other and their regen was higher than their DPS so they kept fighting forever and the server had to be reset.
If anyone remembers another game called Dransik, I also discovered a bug in a quest that crashed the server and caused a rollback of everyone's characters. I did that like five times. I was a real cunt back then.

Yeah, the game killed itself with its massive unfairness and unforgiving system. At least Ultima gave people a chance. It seems that the game was built around fucking over the dungeon runners, and other playstyles, and giving all the benefits to banditry and looting corpses. Shit even the way the dungeons were laid out were fucked up, where almost all of them had narrow entrances easily exploitable by massive groups of PvP. I remember one time spending 3 days in a dungeon just running around and doing fuck all because the only way of getting out is through the dungeon entrance, which means taking your chance at outrunning PvP bands. On top of dying all the time you had the chance of permadeath at a moments notice.
Nubs just didn't see the point in gitting gud or even trying. It was a game that praised and rewarded dickassery and keeping the nubs in the dark so you can easily exploit them while they ran around trying to level, and stealing their gold and items.
The PvP and dungeons in this game were great, but the grinding game ridiculous.
At least Runescape is still a thing, r-right, guys?

There were tons of new update the pass couple of months after they hired a ponyfag as a new dev. TA is the new endgame hardcore dungeon, Cosmic Bosses are new open world raids, and there is an event call the Nightmare event that is happen the pass month. Plus, there are tons of new furry options, so that kept me busy.

It's just not the same anymore, I spent weeks and weeks pvping, and i'm someone that hates losing because of rushes/outnumbering ganks. But damn running around on my assassin just fucking beating the shit out of 2 people that tried to kill me while I was farming felt so damn good.
Hell if anyone touched/killed me while I wasn't paying attention, I'd make sure to use the in-combat invis, step back for a bit and gank the everloving shit out of him and anyone associated.

When I tried playing again recently, it didn't have the same feel anymore. There was no-one running any dungeons below 55, full of BR/TR/retards. Also everytime I try to play with the group I used to play with, they always wanted to start pvping/invading enemy zones at level 30 ish to fight people our own level. Sadly these faggot 55-65's kept butting in and killing us on sight, it used to be that when you saw 2 groups of level 30's fighting, you don't massacre the enemy team but see how it played out.

The cash shop can be annoying with the popup when you log in but otherwise it's pretty much the same as far as I've seen. Came back last month after about 3 years away. If you don't want to mess with the combat you can switch it to legacy mode and change the layout so it looks like OSRS and plays like it.

Depends on how you view P2W. The many free archetypes are good enough for all contents, like the Behemoth (tank), Soldier (dps), and Radiant (healers) covering all three roles. There is more than enough costume to go around and build your dream character. You can get most of the cashshop item ingame, like Freeform and Hideouts. I stay on the game just for the character customization alone.

The archon and chloromancer are two builds from this game I thoroughly enjoyed and stuck with me, and I've yet to see anything similarly well wrought from a divergent gameplay standpoint in other games.

it was entirely about player-built cities. most of the map was empty space intended for player cities. you could place walls, guard barracks, shops etc. all gear was obtained through player-built shops
there was essentially no PvE content after level 20. to get to max level you HAD to join a guild with a city near some good monster spawns, and then grind with your guild. the grind was not very long
players dropped the entire contents of their inventory (excluding equipped items), so killing other players was extremely profitable, but because of the mechanics everyone traveled in groups. this led to massive GvG, and therefore massive grudges, which culminated in server-wide wars in which everyone had to take a side. you could destroy player cities and this frequently happened as guilds that hated each other fought over the best spots

I was one of the first Hero Knight of my server and I also made my own build with DEX / STR and mid Stam for dem delicious block and attack speed.
With this build I was able to beat Assassins in 1vs1 without skills and farm giants very quickly AND still able to AOE with 60+ mobs because of the delicious blocks
I also discovered some fun things like how attack boost awakening buffed the damage return of Pain Reflection.
Man, it was such a shitty horrible game extremely P2W but damn the crazy choice and freedom of build you had on this game was fun.

MMO's suffer from a lack of actual gameplay. Devs seem to think just cramming together some basic and i do mean basic mechanics and letting people play together means automatic fun. You almost always end up with an ultra shallow game where everyone goes solo as long as possible, a few raids and thats it. I need meat dammit. Real meat. pvp wars, crafting, building and mining. Make it hard. Hide the stats so no one can obsess over builds.

The game was made by Russians for Russians and the micro transaction design was also designed for this.
Early on in the closed beta the game was amazing and it only got better as it went in to open beta and the in game store opened. Shit went downhill fast.
A few Europeans checked the Russian servers and it turned out that things that were being sold for $2.00 in the US costed the equivalent of a few cents for ten in Russia. The game was designed for a "pay as you go" subscription via micro transactions (paying a few cents to rez faster or popping an XP boost when you know you are going to grind) but the western distributor got greedy and charged about 500 times too much for items, killing all of the early game. The game never recovered completely.

Plus with one of the recent patches I started having graphical issues and really bad framerate drops so at this very moment I'm not playing it at all, hopefully they'll makes some progress with the story and the nest revamps when I'll finally get a new machine, the story was what made me come back to this game ever since beta.

This game could have been so perfect. but a horribly unoptimized engine kept it out of reach of many who ran wow perfectly. A pvp centric system that falls off in quality after the first tier, and a rather shoddy netcode made this game dead on arrival. fucking shame though too because it had some very cool aspects and a great look.

Quite a few reasons. It's easy to just go "durr hurr WoW clones," but really I'll just name the biggest one. I could type out a few posts about this but I'm too lazy.

Easily the biggest one. All the modern conveniences of solo leveling and auto grouping kill any sort of community building. My MMO progression was EQ > FFXI > WoW. In those first two games, groups were required for most classes to advance past level 15. If you were shit, or had a shitty attitude, you got no where fast. So when you saw a max level person when you were a lowbie, it was almost an event. Dude had to be a fucking legend or some shit. They were generally cool people too, given the community centric nature of the game.
But now any person can just hit the top by themselves in most MMOs. This creates a few problems. Obviously you end up with complete spergs at the top. But more importantly there's usually nothing left to do at the top but group content. In the past, this wouldn't be much of an issue. You would have been partying with other people for hours to reach where you were. So when you got a max level healer, mage, etc., you knew what you were getting into. Now? Mr. Wizard might be level 9999, but he's never done group content so he ends up playing like complete shit.
But hey, it doesn't matter, because he can just leave and use the Auto Group and Dungeon finder to instantly get a new pack of people to carry. This is another reason community is dead. You don't have to talk anymore. Just push a button and off you go. You're shit? They're shit? Someone's as ass? Doesn't matter! You'll never communicate with them again. Hell I once played some modern free2play MMO with a friend where you couldn't even talk in a dungeon finder groups.
But yea, community is dead. No one bothers except for guilds at the top, and it's usually slap fighting over shitty PvP. It's amazing the most social genre has devolved into a shared single player game with a chat room.

Warhammer was popular at first regardless of the netcode.
The game was retardedly unbalanced to the point that a party of nothing but Bright Wizards could easily steamroll any possible enemy group that outnumbered them two to one.

because you HAD to group to do anything at all, it forced you to become proficient in your group-defined role, so at endgame, you were at least decent at your job, plus you knew other good people to group with.
new MMO's let everyone skip to max level with no effort, then you can auto-group until you get carried despite yourself.
it's a side effect of the vidya industry's expansion, there are so many gaming options, it's hard to get anyone to commit a few hundred hours to any one game

Love this MMO to death. So much lore building was put into this game. It even has it's own made-up language with it's own philology, formation and everything that you can find all over the world from items, even in tombs explaining the lore of the universe.
It's still alive, but man do I wish it had more people.
The crafting/harvesting of this game was also the most intuitive thing I've seen in any MMO.

Eh, too be quite frank, forcing grouping is bad, HOWEVER, world content should be really fucking hard to solo as well, it should also be a slow.
The bigger problems stems from the lack of free form player interaction, less and less MMOs have focused on having player run economics in favor of longer character specific grinds, as well as punished players more and more for grouping up, while making soloing super easy for everyone.
I still believe the only reason why WOW ever got as big as it did was it hit that perfect mix of having bullshit mob difficulty like defias pillagers and 20-30 second long poison debuffs and aggro ranges as big as half your view distance if not more, but could still be solo'd if you took things slow, crafted lots of food/bandages/potions, and kept your gear up to check, or you could of course mitigate all that by grouping up with someone, also the majority of gear was crafted or BOE and drops weren't weighed towards your own class/stats, so you had to trade with others at some point.
Eve shows that sandbox MMOs are still profitable. Why aren't there more?

Sandbox games require a lot of time and dedication to get going, even EVE started with low sub numbers, and has only slowly grown over the years, which is impressive as most MMOs spike at launch and die.
In reality, the next big/good sandbox MMO will more likely then not be a developer project then an actual retail product, but it would require someone who is as insane and dedicated as ToadyOne with knowledge of netcode, but that likely will never happen.
