Not only can the ai pilot skells but as long as they have one or more insurance charges left on them ai downs are replaced for free without using the insurance. So most people die one or twice then pass the frame down so they never need to actually buy replacements

One of the few complaints I have about the game is that the playable party members are all human, when there are so many other interesting and well-developed races in the game's world. And the few xenos that DO join your party (L, Celica, andElma) are the only members of their kind.
We get to learn all sorts of cool things about how the Prone celebrate funerals or how the Orphe reproduce, but next to nothing about Celica other than her relationship with Rock.

The game is really one of the best open world games ever made. Even at high levels in Cauldros, you find hidden caves that lead to hidden enemy bases that can be really intricate and large scaled you'd struggle not to get lost sometimes or struggle not to be overwhelmed by mobs.
There's an area that one of the later chapters of the story takes place in, but I ended up exploring that area of Cauldros before I ever got that far in the story and it felt fucking magnificent just rushing through their main base with alarms going off.

I got pretty far into it before I just sort of lost interest and put it down for a while, I think what stopped me was I was getting pop-ups for character missions with characters I had just gotten who I had like half a heart with and needed 3 hearts or whatever for, and it just irritated me. I should just go back and do the main missions.

Yes, the NPCs were pretty repetitive. Not really surprising considering how many there were with speaking roles, to say nothing of the randoms walking around town or infodumping. If they gave some of them a few player styles and a wider range of armor, it would have been harder to tell.
