They sold a half million of the gamepads which is pretty awesome for a peripheral for PC gaming. For the money its probably the best gamepad that's ever been made for PC gaming.

Its main problem is that its required Steam Big Picture mode, but that's not an issue anymore.
>>
>>340049818
I ended up buying one for 30 bucks, very nice for most games and the back triggers can be a godsend. Not to mention it's customizable as fuck. Only issue I have is that I feel that the handles are a bit thick for my medium hands.
>>
>>340049818 >>340049950
I never used one. Were they really that bad or was it just kbm elitism?

I use a touchpad all on my laptop. What stops it from working on a Gamepad?

Check Steam app named Controller Companion. Pretty useful and pretty cheap and pretty.
>>
>>340049950
The controller is actually really good and pretty much required if you use your PC on a couch

I wouldn't play RTS with it but its really comfy to play Civ / XCOM / etc
>>
>>340051370
It's not really a bad controller, but Valve were dumb and tried to compete with kb+m instead of other controllers.

The amount of precision you can do with your entire hand/wrist will always surpass control you can do with a single thumb.
>>
if Gaben would send me a controller for free I'd take it. maybe then i'd buy those lazy-ass console ports that demand you own a console controller. i haven't felt enough desire to waste $50 in buying a controller i'd only use for a few $5 beat 'em up button mashers and maybe those Japanese Asscreed (Dark Souls) games
>>
It's sold 500K apparently, compare that to the sales of something like the Logitech F series and you'll have your answer.

but it doesn't get carried by HDMI.
so I could either set up an old laptop with steam streaming (wasting more electricity and generating heat) or I'd need to be within a very short range of my desktop so that both the HDMI cable and the 360 wireless could reach it.
I'd rather buy a steam link.
>>
>>340049818
I like the concept of steam link, till my pc freezes and I actually have to get off the couch
>>
I think both require Big Picture, which is terrible.

I bought the pad to try it out and it required a Big Picture update. The update broke my Steam install and the only way to fix is was to copy over the Steam directory of a friend. Support got back to my ticket a sweet 7 months later.
>>
>>340055696
the gamepad requiring Big Picture is stupid, but the Link wouldn't make sense without Big Picture.
>>
>>340055696
You don't NEED big picture for the controller. You only use it so you can edit the config you use on your desktop and to browse community configs

The controller though, my god it's so useful
>>
>>340049818

I was thinking about getting the link. I have a pretty long HDMI cable and USB extensions, but the HDMI cable is huge and bulky and it makes for a pretty noticeable input lag. I'm curious if the steam link would be a little better or not.
>>
>>340050368
That screenshot is outdated now. Kozec's SC tool now supports the gyro (and an on-screen keyboard).

I find myself using it for web browsing on the sofa a lot also.

It's fucking god tier desu. The Steam link is fucking awesome if you take the time to hard wire everything. It works on Wi-Fi for simple 2D games, but shits the bed if you try to play anything it needs to render in 3D.

I wasn't sold I the controller at all, until a friend brought one over, and I found out how amazingly customizable it is. If the layout feels wrong for a particular game, you can download some user's preset in seconds and try that instead, it's great.
>>
>>340049818
the config UI desperately needs a refresh holy shit
so much of it is trial and error with text descriptions asking you to visualize things rather than actually drawing a visualization on the screen

making a 2d object like absolute mouse region or a touch menu should be done with drawing a preview rectangle on screen, not with 4 unnumbered sliders.
gyro config should label angles, but again, unnumbered sliders

rawinput mouse and kb seems to be broken, im assuming its being passed thru the controller HID and then unpacked by steam itself
>>
>>340057712
>steam link
>render

But yes, 3D games usually have more changes between frames, so more drawing has to be done than in 2D, which is what Steam Link has trouble doing over slow connections or high packet loss huehuehue, loss, get it
>>
>>340049818
I still don't understand its touch thingy. Why not use tried-and-true physical buttons?

>bought the steam controller because I thought it was going to be useful
Have yet to find a single game that it works better for than a 360 controller. If the game needs mouse and keyboard you just use those and not the mess that is those touch pads. another thing that gets me is the fact that half the games wont even launch with it plugged in, the damn controller crashes games somehow. 360? works perfectly. The worst part is how it also fits in your hands, shit just doesn't feel right. imagine a 360 controller. now flip it upside down so the handles are pushed directly into your palms. Steam somehow thought "yeah people love controllers that don't fit in your hands".

I cant bitch that much though. I did get the thing half off or something like that when I bought it bundled with DS3.

Don't bother with it, the trackpad ruins the whole goddamn controller. I don't give a shit how much you can customize the trackpad, it's inferior to a joystick in every possible way. Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to put a trackpad on a controller when people constantly mock the concept of gaming with a trackpad?
>>
>>340058176
Thanks for explaining that. Didn't quite understand why before you explained that.
>>
>>340058375
>the trackpad, it's inferior to a joystick in every possible way

Measurably false. It is objectively better for FPS. You simply cannot aim as accurate or as quickly with a joystick.

Joystick is better for movement/racing and things like that, but that is why there is a joystick on the left.
>>
>>340055487
Wait so if I build a PC and hook it up to my tv should I use an hdmi cable or steam link?
>>
>>340058710
I guess, but at that point I would just be using a keyboard+mouse. The only time I ever use a controller are for games that use a third person camera.
>>
>>340057804
also rawinput is needed for MAME, but ive been using a build of sdlmame to get round that, but the problem is you gotta wait for someone else to build it.
gyro joystick works pretty well for paddle and light gun emu tho (absolute inputs), trackpad is practically a solid state trackball, gyro mouse kinda works as spinner with a bit of practice
>>
>>340058204
Think of it this way: Consoles have context menus all over it. When you press up in the menu from some position, it goes to some other predictable position. PC screen isn't that simple. There are buttons all over the place so pressing up doesn't have predictable location. That's why you need a mouse so you can press the exact location you want in the screen. Now joystick mouse has always been wonky to use since it's hard to have it fast and accurate. And that's why they used trackpads.
>>
>>340059043
>but at that point I would just be using a keyboard+mouse

Sure. Kb+M is much better for aiming. But the point of the steam controller is to be able to play games that require a mouse from your couch or bed.

Besides, a unique thing about the SC is that it gives you mouse style control with triggers and analogue. Perfect for games like GTA where you want to run and drive while also shoot accurately.
>>
>>340059043
have you ever used kb+m on your couch or bed? It's a pain.

>>340049818
It fell under the below average mark if the reports about it are true

Steam OS being a restricted version of another Linux OS didn't help neither along with the controller not being properly optimized for many games even on the list of games it says should be plug n play

Its neat I guess. Give it four or five years to work out all the kinks and sell one that isn't as flimsy and the functionality's been updated. Really cool idea honestly, it just needs to be worked on heavily to truly be competitive with the options that 'werk on my machine :^)'. It's hot fucking garbage for fighting games but that's no surprise.

99% of games on PC are either designed for mouse/keyboard or for an Xbox gamepad.

The Steam controller fills a very tiny niche where it's basically only useful for games that use mouse/keyboard, but don't need anything resembling precise controls (like Civ, Xcom, etc). And honestly, if I wanted to play civ on the couch, I'd rather just use a wireless mouse and a small board I can sit on my lap or whatever.
