Javelin has two advantages:

They're all fun in their own ways.
Ranger has the most balanced weaponry (excepting a few gimmicky 'cannot reload' plasma versions.)
Can heal his NPC allies with health pickups, so you can listen to the randomized banter longer.
Air Raider is the only way to get drivable vehicles in 2025/4.1, though his weakness is close combat. Which is a hell of a weakness in these games.
Gigantus and Vegaulta are the better vehicles in my opinion. The copters are alright, but control weirdly, and have a long startup on taking off.
Wing Diver is interesting. Their weaponry is about as varied as ranger, but they have a jet-pack and energy bar.
Their weapons will reload even when not equipped, but this will drain the energy bar, and if it ever hits zero, you have to wait for it to fully refill before you can continue reloading or flying.
Fencer is great, but you have to figure out how to play him. He has a LOT of innertia on his movement, but his weapons come with either a vertical or horizontal booster that will launch him a ways in either direction. (Vert can launch either straight up or at an angle if you're moving. Horizontal will launch you in which ever direction you're moving at the time.)
There are ways to keep the momentum from a horizontal boost though. Javelin weapons or shield reflectors can be used to cancel out of the animation frames that would slow you down. Allowing you to boost again, or simply coast along.
He also has some great weapons, though a few require teamwork with an Air Raider to get the most out of... or even fire at all.
But, if you like dakka, he can dual weild chainguns.

The gameplay is fun enough. Expect a generic B-movie plot (if you don't get to skip every cutscene in the first place)
You have around 80 or 90 levels to beat, 4 classes and a lot of weapons to unlock.
Soloing mission on INFERNO is really fun too.
At the start each mission might take 10-15 minutes and by the end around 30m to an hour depending on your number of failed attempts.
It's like MonsterHunter. Much more fun to play online, but still a decent offline game.

Active enough, severs are international so you never get cucked because of your region.
Plenty of people play through the game online. In fact, online mode has some 10(?) extra missions.
From my experience when I made my own lobby it would fill up pretty quick, then we would play for at least a couple of hours, lose a guy, wait a couple of minutes in the lobby to fill the party up gain, and go back to progressing in the game.
A lot of veterans also like to help new players, since repeating levels is enjoyable.

yes there are people who like the absurdity of an fps drop especially when the game looks so shit to begin with. But they're not decieving anyone, they outright admit it has FPS problems, then go on to say they personally don't mind it too much.
But an outsider is immediatly informed that the game doesn't run at silky smooth 60fps. From reading these threads no new guys will get the game and be surprised at the unstable performance.
Just as fucking horrible voice acting can be considered a plus, a stupid low framerate on high-impact situations can be considered a plus by some. It's like hitstop turned to 11.

I love EDF but it has some very real problems. Very limited environment variety (caves, beach, field, city, docks, suburbs). 4.1 fixed the variety I'll admit. Horrendous vehicle controls which were practically useless until 4.1. And for some reason the Japanese don't realize people don't like being ragdolled and having control stripped away from the player.
I love EDF, but it's a budget title with a niche fanbase. But these threads (when they're not flooded with port begging) treat the series as some hidden masterpiece. These are very glaring issues that shouldn't be ignored when people are asking whether they should buy it.

What fucking sucks is when you're actively trying to not blow up buildings: not because you're trying to roleplay a good gie who doesn't want to level a city, but because if you do want to see buildings destroyed the game kind of breaks.
That's a budget thing, sure, and they want to keep the destructibility, fine. But there are other issues that could be easily resolved. Controls are pretty bad. Take soldier for example: jump and roll is the same button. It's frustrating. You can say git gud all you want, but remeber when you couldn't even roll through fences or guard rails? Bad mechanics. I don't need to go on about the clunky vehicles.
Again, 4.1 thankfully fixed most of these problems, but 2025 was literally a fucking broken game, where 2017 was easily the better option. But people were still making excuses back then. 4.1 is how it should've been released in the first place.

Meh, one only needs to take a look at any screenshot/webm and realise this isn't a perfect AAA production. You can see the shlock from a mile away, even if you're not familiar with the franchise.
The most I see is people saying it's fun, which is true in most cases.
I seriously doubt there are any new anons here that think the game doesn't have issues. Being niche, low budget and flawed is part of its appeal, including being ragdolled for 15 seconds and losing control of your character.
It's up to each person to find out if they like that sort of cheese or not.
I feel like you are criticising people for liking a B-movie. Everyone knows its flawed and silly, that's why they like it and find it so fun in the first place. Outsiders know from a glance (looking at the trailer, in the movie's case) that it is a low budget production with flaws like every other movie of its kind.

It's a 2 step process
1) you need a weapon with a forward boost
2) you need another weapon to cancel the recovery animation of that boost
So the usual set-up is to get your favorite melee weapon on the right hand, to attack and boost
On the left hand you need a weapon with a quick animation. Dual wielding melee weapons works, but a melee attack is relatively slow to use as a cancel since it also has a recovery period. A Shield + Melee also works, the shield reflect attack isn't the quickest either but viable enough. The best option are Javelin cannons (best being Javelin Catapult for less reloads/down time), which are very useless as an offensive weapon, but have by far the quickest 1-shot animation (they are made for rapid fire after all)
So you first boost with R1 (right-hand weapon dodge ability) and right afterwards before the recovery time you press L2 (left-hand weapon attack) and shoot a single javelin, which has next to no recovery time after attacking, meaning you can press R1 in very quick succession.
There are 2 methods to boost, one is faster but requires timming, the other is slower but you don't need to focus on timming at all:
Fast method:
- click R1 > L2 > R1 > L2 > R1 > L2 > (etc) while paying attention to your timming. You can fuck up and shoot 2 javelins at once, or boost for too long. Muscle memory kicks in after a while and it becomes easier to do even in stressful situations.
Easy/slower method:
-Hold L2 while spam clicking R1. This way you can't fuck up, but you won't boost as frequently, I'd estimate this is 20% to 30% slower than the other way.
Your secondary set of weapons (3rd and 4th) can be whatever you want, you shoot with those then switch back to this one to move around

I forgot to mention that the Javelin is also useful to cancel any other animation, including attacks.
So if you have a normal (aka not rapid-fire) melee weapon on your right hand, going L2>R2>L2>R2(etc) you attack 1.5x or 2x faster than simply holding R2 to attack.
This means that you pratically have the power of dual-wielding melee weapons even though you only use one, and at the same time you have the best dash cancel.
